i remember this story, when i was in secondary school, for our key stage three
exams about 7 or 8 years ago, we had to write about what happened using our
imagination, i went with a ghost theory which threw them into the sea, resulting
with them ending up in a parrallel universise. this is probably not true though.

I've now had a quick read thro' the website you speak of.
The freak wave theory is a definate candidate.
They do happen...they do exist.
I believe they can appear out of nowhere on seemingly calm days, a
result of possible seismic activity in the sea???
I personally knew one individual who lost his life, while fishing on
rocks, possibly due to these 'sudden' waves.
Incidentally what remained of his body was not recovered for six
months later..and even then it was only by sheer luck.
I have also personally seen waves appear out of nowhere and swamp land
masses quite suddenly. These waves can sweep the legs out from under
you..and before you know it, you are in the water..and you may have no
hope of getting out.
The sea is a two edged sword, and she must be respected.
