Hi Folks
I've had a think. How about limiting ourselves, initially, to
non-county topics/questions to those below.
Mil Military topics
Occ Occupational topics
Pmg Parishmouse General topics
Rel Religous topics
Soc Genealogical Society news
Simple "looking for" should be added to the Database area.
Please pass an opinion as you see fit.

As you will probably realise the group is new and I am transferring the stuff from the old boards as I get time. The surname lists are in the database section (click on Database on the left menu) and are held here to keep everyones email addresses as safe as I can. Only members can view the list and they are not indexed by any search engines so should never be seen by anyone other than members of this group. Feel free to add any names you want and I'll try and add more to the lists over the coming days.
The Chapman codes are reference codes given to each county in the UK. It is a short way of referring to the counties in a form that everyone will know (if only we could all remeber them all ! ). I am sure someone else can probably give you a better resume of them but that is the essence of them. You can find a list of them in the files section.
Let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

OK you didn't get caught that time so I'll leave the settings as they are for now and see what Yahoo have to say and we'll all have to keep our eyes peeled for spam
I've uploaded a file listing the Chapman codes for everyone ... you'll find them in the Files section of the group home page.

Hi Sally
This is coming off the website.
I think it is likely to be a white/black list setting somewhere. They
wouldn't be offering repliable email addresses, the logic goes.
It would make the Yahoo Groups service much more user friendly. I know
of one very ardent genealogist who doesn't like noticeboards, but loves
email notification.
If you can't find the setting it may be worth asking Yahoo to
automatically allow members auto access. I'm sure anything SPAM like
will get dropped on like a ton of rocks from us 'mouse-ers'. Should
Yahoo not have a get around then there should be a new members message
slot, or you are likely to see a lot of messages in the SPAM box,
especially from those who use Rootsweb as well.
The reason I prefer Thunderbird to that M$ one is a matter of security.
If it is T-bird then I will enter the website to post replies.
Hope that all makes sense.
Cheers

Hi Mike
Yahoo doesn't seem to like Thunderbird as the two emails you have sent
using it have been trapped as spam and the delay has been caused by it
sitting in the spam folder waiting for me to approve it. I suggest
trying another application so as not to get caught as spam. I wonder
why it doesn't like Thunderbird?

The reason why I'm responding to my own message is that I can now tell you that from leaving me to being posted on the website was a delay of about 19 minutes. So don't panic if you reply, by email to a message and it doesn't immediately appear on the website.

Folks,
Two shots in one. Firstly I'm writing this in Thunderbird, not the
Yahoo browser, just to see what happens. (I used the Reply to All
button)
Secondly, in response to Sally should we have our own list of Chapman
codes, on the website, and own 3 letter codes on the website for
newbies and me who can't remember the 40 or 50 of them.

I was thinking - carefully - that as we are starting to grow, but before we get too many that we should have as a guideline that each subject starts with the county Chapman code, e.g:
WOR: xxxx xxxx xxxxx
There are a lot of counties in the UK and Eire so I think this might make things easier for Sally.
Also those of us who get lots of emails can 'delete' without reading. We could always refer back to the website if we were too enthusiastic
The theme could be developed further as things progress, e.g. Occ for Occupational questions, Rel for Religion based queries and Soc for society notifications. This would maintain a 3 letter starter. The Chapman codes are always capitals, I think. These others could be mixed case.
Your thoughts, but I think the final decision should be Sally's.

Hi Sally.

Perhaps I was the only one that didn't have problems with the old

Had more problems setting my Yahoo Account up and joining the group
than I needed, but made it in the end.
Best of luck with the new group and hope we can all help each other.

There see we can all still know you as Patx even if yahoo won't let
you use it and nope take your eyes of me for five mins and it is
amazing what I can get up to ... my Mum has always found that too :) I
must admit when I arranged for PM to change servers I never envisaged
quite the radical change that there has ended up having to be done but
I think it may all work out for the better in the long run (fingers
crossed here).
Congrats on going to be a granny again ... let us know we the small
bundle arrives won't you.
Anyway, welcome back and must go now to put some stuff up on the site.

Hi Sally,
I have sent this message to say thank you for all that you have done in
setting up this new group. As a new member and tried to get on Parish
Chat, with difficulty, I think you may have cracked it with this. I
feel also that I cannot leave Mike, at present, on his own as the only

I hope that we shall all benefit from this and hopefully find out more
info in our searches.
Many thanks

Hi Maggie,
The fraught meter is reducing slowly now! I've started transferring some of the
photos and
will do some more later as at the mo I am uploading the Hanley Castle photos to
pm.com.
It is a puzzler why some members couldn't get on the boards as I too had no
problem so it
was only when Mike and Chris let me know that I realised that there was a
problem. When
I looked at the logs I realised that quite a few must be having problems as
there was a
huge drop in the number of people visiting the site. Having said that I still
can't find out
why there was a problem and am left with the only possibility that it is to do
with the
change to a new srver and that certain ISPs haven't updated their DNS addresses
yet. I
think this happened to the IGI site a few years ago and for about 3 weeks or
more lots of
people were saying they had a problem with the site and it turned out to be
that.
I won't delete the boards until we all have decided whether we prefer the Yahoo
Groups
version or the old one. It will be a group decision as to when and if we stay
here or go
back, but I don't know about you I like what I see so far.

Hi Gals,
I think that's right, as I think I'm the first guy to get on board. I
was the one that started finding problems early last week on the old
forum.
Lets hope this goes well. I think I would like all the threads that I
started to come over, which won't be too many.
Going away to make a stew and edit my profile.
Good luck Sally on this venture and see you all soon.
Mike
Hi Sally,
I hope you have a less fraught time now!
I would like my photos etc, transfered if you have time please.
I can't understand the reason for folks having a problem accessing the
old boards though - I didn't have any problems (or none that I
realised!) and I logged several times a day!!
Anyway, good luck with this new board.
Maggie
Hi Sally,
As Maggie said "I found you" !
Yahoo Groups are really good and I subscribe to several already, so I'm
certain that Parishmouse will do well here.
Of course there will be some things that we will miss on the old
Parishmouse site, but as they say 'a change is like a holiday', most
importantly though, your time will be freed up and your pocket a little
heavier.
Yes please, to my photograph albums being transferred to our new home.
Kaye.
Hi Maggie
Yes you have found me after a very fraught day yesterday trying to find out why
no-one but
me can access pm.co.uk and I still have no idea, so decided to give up and setup
this group
which I must say will ease the admin burden on me and I may get some time later
to get on
with my own family's history. Do you want me to move your photos as I still
have access to
the boards? I won't delete the old boards incase we all hate this setup and want
to go back
and of course IF I can find out what the problem is with the old system.
I must say though, after having a good look at what we have here and what is
likely to
become available soon it looks good and its free .... I had to pay for the old
boards.
Anyway, better get on now
BFN
Sally
Welcome to the new parishmouse group at Yahoo. The idea is that this
group will replace the current ParishChat message board and will give
me more time to add transcriptions to parishmouse.com and I think give
members more features and be supported by the power of Yahoo.
Why change? Well it takes a lot of time behind the scenes to keep the
original message boards running. Databases have to be regularly
repaired and optimised, software updated to protect it from hackers
and then there is the constant problem of spam ... need I say more!
Then if there are problems I end up trying to sort them out over a
very temperamental internet connection as I now have no broadband.
For example, yesterday I ended up spending 10 hours trying to sort
things out and upgrade the system, just think of the number of new
transcriptions I could have done in that time.
Anyway, I hope you all like the new group.
