Building with letters TA?   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #161 of 229 |
Hi folks,

I hope you are all ok. I just received an e-mail from someone asking about the building opposite Westgate House on Park Road. I know the building, but have no idea what the TA could mean or what the building was originally. Any ideas?

This is the e-mail:

in park road there is a building opposite Westgate house that thas the letters TA carved in the stone. its the building that stretches from the pound shop and ends above a hair dressers. any idea what it was originally? looks like it would have been a posh place when it was built

Hi, Nik

Robert Sayle's was in Cowgate, just about on the site of well can't
be sure these days but it was on the corner of King Street and I
think it used to be the Co-op Insurance. I absolutely promise you
that Robert Sayle was on that site - I remember the fire and also
when I worked at the Evening Telegraph there was a photo of the fire
on the MD's office wall and it was certainly Cowgate..... just had
the sense to look in my 1951 Peterborough Street Directory and it was
on the corner of King Street. Bit depressing to remember that far
back!

Peterborough General Electric Co was on the opposite side of Cowgate
at no. 8a and not far from Robert Sayle which was between 5 -15
Cowgate. Good job I kept that book.

Regards, Marion

the location. The reason I ask, is that I have been handed some
photos and the owner thought they were photos of a bomb blast (WW2)
in Bridge Street. However, I'm quite certain that there wasn't many
bombs dropped on p'boro and I don't think Bridge St was hit. Also, a
couple of cars in the photo lead me to believe that they were taken
post WW2. A couple of vehicles actually look like they are from the
1950s. I have a pretty good idea of the location these photos were
taken (I don't believe they are of Bridge St.), and I suspect it is
the Robert Sayle store.

Hi Jayne, That's what I thought at first, but I'm only aware of the TA base only ever being on London Road, I'm most probably wrong about that though! Nik...
