Re: [peterborough_memories] Re: Peterborough in pictures

Hello Christine.
Glad to see someone named the fish and chip shop for me "Orchards" I remember it well.We would carol sing around Christmas until we collected enough for a bag of chips and some pop ! After consuming them, off we would go again, talk about sing for your supper, taking empty pop bottles back also helped.
Someone  named the butchers shop where I was errand boy "Sansby's" When I was there I think the butchers daughter mostly ran the shop 1945 ish.Gordon Boughton.

Ron that although I left Peterborough 60 years ago I am still a Posh
supporter much to the disbelief of my Devon friends.I well remember
going to the London Rd ground with father in those days.My dads name
was Tom.I also watched Posh here in Devon at both Plymouth and Torquay
in recent years.I did wonder if the "Revels" remember the Butcher's or
the Fish shop I mentioned ?Your whole area has changed unbelievably
since we were children,we used to walk to the end of M'S avenue, across
Lincoln Rd into Sages lane, over the railway (There was a foot
crossing then) it was all fields wonderful for kids.During the war
there was a small tented group of soldiers with an anti aircraft gun
just over the crossing in the field.I remember them giving us tins of
Mconikies ?" Like thick beef soup"For home.Speak to you again.Gordon.

When I lived in Walton in the early 60's, the fish and chip shop was
called 'Orchards'. My brother went to school with Ronnie Orchard. The
Fish shop was called 'Orchards' for many years under different
ownership. It is now revamped under new management -again- but since
last year it is owned by Chinese people who do chinese food as well as
fish and chips. (I haven't used the chippy for around 20 years -
don't like greasy food!). The butcher's was made into a private
dwelling house after the last butcher died a few years ago, but
previously to that owned by a Mr Sansby, whose daughter has married
one of Mr and Mrs Revel's grandsons.

I used to walk over the foot crossing (which was mainly used for farm
vehicles I think) at Sages Lane in the 60's, with dogs, over to all
the fields and foot paths the other side - which is now Bretton. I
think that was closed when the line was electrified, the same time as
the road crossing was closed in Marholm Road - now a monstrous
concrete foot bridge over.

I lament the loss of so much nearby countryside - you need a car to
find it these days. Until the age of five, I lived in the Marholm
village, which is just outside Bretton. Bretton has swallowed up all
the countryside in between. I daresay you could remember more than me.
Mr and Mrs Revel can remember when my house wasn't there, and fields
through to Paston Church (hence 'Churchfield Road').

Christine
