Hello Adele
I think Alec Plant was a cousin of my Dad's. I have just looked at
your Dogsthorpe website, found it very interesting. My father in law,
Victor Weston, lived in Newark Avenue for 64 years ( he passed away 3
years ago aged 91). He used to tell us stories of old Dogsthorpe, a
lot of which is mentioned on your website.
Peter ,my husband ,has memories of the old Showground, going through
the fence , also of fields where Dogsthorpe estate is now. You could
also see the Cathedrals of Ely and Peterborough across the fields in a
straight line.
The Sugar beet factory was mentioned on another message. We lived near
there, the smell used to come in to your house, on to the clothes in
the hall. The smell is not missed!

Glad to see someone named the fish and chip shop for me "Orchards" I remember it well.We would carol sing around Christmas until we collected enough for a bag of chips and some pop ! After consuming them, off we would go again, talk about sing for your supper, taking empty pop bottles back also helped.
Someone named the butchers shop where I was errand boy "Sansby's" When I was there I think the butchers daughter mostly ran the shop 1945 ish.Gordon Boughton.

Bretton has swallowed up all the countryside in between. I daresay you could remember more than me. Mr and Mrs Revel can remember when my house wasn't there, and fields through to Paston Church (hence 'Churchfield Road').
A chap by the name of Chris Porsz sent a rather large collection of photographs taken during the early 1980s recently. I've managed to sort through some of them and created a new page dedicated to the construction of Queensgate.

Hi folks,
I lived in Ashcroft Gardens from 1952 until 1967 and well remember
the old showground. The site also contained the Peterborough Rugby
Club whose entrance stood not far from where Ashcroft Garden met
Eastfield Road. It had, what seemed to a youngster, huge white stone
pillars that, I think, the gates hung on.
During the agricultural Show, which as far as I can remember, was one
of the few events to take place there once a year, we could hear the
music quite clearly from where we lived. On the last day of the show
you could sometimes get into the showground for free later on in the
afternoon and could sometimes get some of the surplus flowers for
free.
The showgound, as with the Orton one, had a speedway track and my
cousin used to ride there, I think on the last day of the Show.
The garage at the top of Ashcort Gardens belonged to a man called
Ollidge I think and my uncle bought a car from him and I bought my
second car, a large pale blue Standard Vanguard phase 1 there also.

My Mothers family lived in the farm which was over the railway from
Sages Lane. They moved there in about 1926 and left in 1938. My
Mother still lives in the house they moved into when they left the
farm. My Grandfather was a Horseman for Browns farm. from

I'm another non-local resident now,
I was born and lived in Francis Gardens (just on border of Walton
area) for 30+ years. The rest of my family still live there.
My father originated from Paston Lane, where my Grandmother lived
until 2007 when she died aged 105 - (must be a good healthy area!!
I now live near Kettering in Northants (the county Peterborough was in
at the time of my birth so I don't actually class myself as having
changed county)

Hello Maureen
I live in Orton now, but I lived in Werrington from 1956 to 1958, then
in Walton until 1964, when we noved to Kettering for my Dad's work. I
went to school at Werrington and Walton Junior schools, so I know the
area well, had a friend in Sages Lane, also Lincoln Road. I was also
born in Paston Lane, my grandmother's house, but then we went to live
in Maxey.
Brenda
I would still like to hear from anyone who remembers my Mothers family, but I don't expect anyone will still remember them living at Headings farm. The farm in the field over the railway from Sages Lane. I t is nice to hear from other people who lived in Walton. I can still remember being able to walk across the fields and wreck from Paston Lane to Mountsteven Avenue. At that time Croyland road at Churchfield Road end was just a dirt track.

Hi Maureen. I remember the farm very well.It was a wonderful walk from Mountsteven Avenue into Sages Lane, across the railway lines to the fields and the farm. I am sure I helped at thrashing time where they had a steam traction engine driving the thresher.I was a young lad at the time and also remember riding on back of the young bullocks in their pen when no one was about ! There was for a time a "tented" army group with gun etc close to the farm to protect the railway I presume.Further on past the farm I believe I remember the sheath's of corn all stood up in the fields to dry.
Also at the end of Sages Lane just before the crossing there was a cottage with very nice grape vine growing out side. By the way, we lived in Mountsteven Ave from around 1936 until the 60's.Regards G Boughton.

Hi again Maureen. I went to Walton Junior around 1938 then on to the senior school, which I left to go to Kings School in 1945. Mr Avery was the Walton head then. I would just love to walk around the old school again for old time sake, but of course it's gone now, I do however remember quite sentimentally the assembly hall, classrooms, playgrounds etc.etc. Regards Gordon

I started School in 1948. I started senior school in 1956 and left in Dec 1959. Mr Avery was still the Headmaster, Mr Judd was Science Master, and he seems to be the teacher that most people you speak to remember.

I am Dave I live in the Westwood area and have lived in Alderman’s
drive, Eastfield and Helpston. Being a true Peterborian, I have a keen interest
in all things to do with the City and surroundings.
Welcome to our hibernating group J….I should have
been a Bear, they like hiding during the winter.
I also remember the name ‘Plant from being around my gran’s
house on the ‘bend’ in Garton End Road, their name was Morriss.

Mothers family lived in the farm which was over the railway from
Sages Lane. They moved there in about 1926 and left in 1938. My
Mother still lives in the house they moved into when they left the
farm. My Grandfather was a Horseman for Browns farm. from

I'm
another non-local resident now,
I was born and lived in Francis Gardens (just on border of Walton
area) for 30+ years.

Hello
Maureen
I live in Orton now, but I lived in Werrington from 1956 to 1958, then
in Walton until 1964, when we noved to Kettering for my Dad's work. I
went to school at Werrington and Walton Junior schools, so I know the
area well, had a friend in Sages Lane, also Lincoln Road. I was also
born in Paston Lane, my grandmother's house, but then we went to live
in Maxey.

Hi
I would still like to hear from anyone who remembers my Mothers family, but I
don't expect anyone will still remember them living at Headings farm. The farm
in the field over the railway from Sages Lane. I t is nice to hear from other
people who lived in Walton. I can still remember being able to walk across the
fields and wreck from Paston Lane to Mountsteven Avenue. At that time Croyland
road at Churchfield Road end was just a dirt track.

Hi
Maureen. I remember the farm very well.It was a wonderful walk from Mountsteven
Avenue into Sages Lane, across the railway lines to the fields and the farm. I
am sure I helped at thrashing time where they had a steam traction engine
driving the thresher.I was a young lad at the time and also remember riding on
back of the young bullocks in their pen when no one was about ! There was for a
time a "tented" army group with gun etc close to the farm to protect
the railway I presume.Further on past the farm I believe I remember the
sheath's of corn all stood up in the fields to dry.
Also at the end of Sages Lane just before the crossing there was a cottage with
very nice grape vine growing out side. By the way, we lived in Mountsteven Ave
from around 1936 until the 60's.Regards G Boughton.

Hi
again Maureen. I went to Walton Junior around 1938 then on to the senior
school, which I left to go to Kings School in 1945. Mr Avery was the Walton
head then. I would just love to walk around the old school again for old time
sake, but of course it's gone now, I do however remember quite sentimentally
the assembly hall, classrooms, playgrounds etc.etc. Regards Gordon

Hi
Gordon
I started School in 1948. I started senior school in 1956 and left in Dec 1959.
Mr Avery was still the Headmaster, Mr Judd was Science Master, and he seems to
be the teacher that most people you speak to remember.

I'm
another non-local resident now,
I was born and lived in FrancisGardens (just on border
of Walton
area) for 30+ years. The rest of my family still live there.
My father originated from Paston
Lane, where my Grandmother lived
until 2007 when she died aged 105 - (must be a good healthy area!!
I now live near Kettering in Northants (the countyPeterborough
was in
at the time of my birth so I don't actually class myself as having
changed county)

Hello
Maureen
I live in Orton now, but I lived in Werrington from 1956 to 1958, then
in Walton until 1964, when we noved to Kettering
for my Dad's work. I
went to school at Werrington and Walton Junior schools, so I know the
area well, had a friend in Sages
Lane, also Lincoln Road. I was also
born in Paston Lane,
my grandmother's house, but then we went to live
in Maxey.

Hi
I would still like to hear from anyone who remembers my Mothers family, but I
don't expect anyone will still remember them living at Headings farm. The farm
in the field over the railway from Sages
Lane. I t is nice to hear from other people who
lived in Walton. I can still remember being able to walk across the fields and
wreck from Paston Lane
to Mountsteven Avenue.
At that time Croyland road at Churchfield
Road end was just a dirt track.

Hi Maureen.
I remember the farm very well.It was a wonderful walk from Mountsteven Avenue into Sages Lane, across
the railway lines to the fields and the farm. I am sure I helped at thrashing
time where they had a steam traction engine driving the thresher.I was a young
lad at the time and also remember riding on back of the young bullocks in their
pen when no one was about ! There was for a time a "tented" army
group with gun etc close to the farm to protect the railway I presume.Further
on past the farm I believe I remember the sheath's of corn all stood up in the
fields to dry.
Also at the end of Sages Lane
just before the crossing there was a cottage with very nice grape vine growing
out side. By the way, we lived in Mountsteven
Ave from around 1936 until the 60's.Regards G
Boughton.

Hi again
Maureen. I went to Walton Junior around 1938 then on to the senior school,
which I left to go to KingsSchool in 1945. Mr Avery
was the Walton head then. I would just love to walk around the old school again
for old time sake, but of course it's gone now, I do however remember quite sentimentally
the assembly hall, classrooms, playgrounds etc.etc. Regards Gordon

Hi
Gordon
I started School in 1948. I started senior school in 1956 and left in Dec 1959.
Mr Avery was still the Headmaster, Mr Judd was Science Master, and he seems to
be the teacher that most people you speak to remember.

Hi. My family lived in the farm over the railway from Sages Lane, which was
called Headings farm, and my Grandfather worked as a horseman for Browns farm.
They left the farm in about 1938. During the war my mother worked in the
torpedo shop in Brotherhoods factory.

Hi
I cannot remember accurately the number off hand but I think it was 117. A
Semi-detached, two houses before the comet pub on the same side of the road
opposite Ascott Drive. There was a bungalow next door between her house and the
pub, closer to the road..... I think that it was Mr Bone who lived in the
bundalow and the 'Moyse's' in the house attached to ours.
Bright blessings
Dave
That is directly opposite my parents. Mr
Bone lived there until his 90’s, and then Mrs Snow his daughter lived
there until recently. I think Mr Bone lived in the semi originally and built
the bungalow in his garden.
There is a book about Garton End
(Dogsthorpe Library used to have a copy, I think Central library still do,
Kings school have a copy but not easy to borrow as I no longer have a child
there) which has a picture of Mr Bone and a horse next to Garton End pond,
which was on the bend where my parents house is now. The houses were built in
the 1930’s by Mr Setchfield who lived opposite the Comet when I was
growing up.
