Hello Adele

I think Alec Plant was a cousin of my Dad's. I have just looked at
your Dogsthorpe website, found it very interesting. My father in law,
Victor Weston, lived in Newark Avenue for 64 years ( he passed away 3
years ago aged 91). He used to tell us stories of old Dogsthorpe, a
lot of which is mentioned on your website.
Peter ,my husband ,has memories of the old Showground, going through
the fence , also of fields where Dogsthorpe estate is now. You could
also see the Cathedrals of Ely and Peterborough across the fields in a
straight line.
The Sugar beet factory was mentioned on another message. We lived near
there, the smell used to come in to your house, on to the clothes in
the hall. The smell is not missed!

Hi Brenda

I lived next door to Mr (Alec?) and Mrs Plant in Garton End Road when I was growing up. I think I saw a picture of your dad in the paper and thought they must be brothers because they looked so alike.

My aunt had a bungalow at Marholm, we , as children, used to bike to

When I lived in Walton in the early 60's, the fish and chip shop was
called 'Orchards'. My brother went to school with Ronnie Orchard. The
Fish shop was called 'Orchards' for many years under different
ownership. It is now revamped under new management -again- but since
last year it is owned by Chinese people who do chinese food as well as
fish and chips. (I haven't used the chippy for around 20 years -
don't like greasy food!). The butcher's was made into a private
dwelling house after the last butcher died a few years ago, but
previously to that owned by a Mr Sansby, whose daughter has married
one of Mr and Mrs Revel's grandsons.

I used to walk over the foot crossing (which was mainly used for farm
vehicles I think) at Sages Lane in the 60's, with dogs, over to all
the fields and foot paths the other side - which is now Bretton. I
think that was closed when the line was electrified, the same time as
the road crossing was closed in Marholm Road - now a monstrous
concrete foot bridge over.

I lament the loss of so much nearby countryside - you need a car to
find it these days. Until the age of five, I lived in the Marholm
village, which is just outside Bretton. Bretton has swallowed up all
the countryside in between. I daresay you could remember more than me.
Mr and Mrs Revel can remember when my house wasn't there, and fields
through to Paston Church (hence 'Churchfield Road').

Hello Gordon, I visited my neighbours last week, and remembered to ask
them if they could recall who lived in that house on the corner in the
40's. I couldn't remember you surname, but Ron thought and came up
with 'Broughton', which is near enough. He said that your dad (and
may be you?) were keen foot ball supporters. Ron always had a season
ticket for the Posh, until recent years.

Do you remember Mr and Mrs Revel, on the same side of Churchfield
Road, as your garden? Both now in their mid 80's.

Hi again Nick.Ref Sally's sugar beet smell,When my father left the railway he worked for a few years at the beet factory driving the yard engine before finally retireing. His clothes brought the smell home after work ! Also, regarding the" Bell " I am ashamed to say I once as a young boy, shot at it with an old Diane air rifle, my father would have given me a taste of his belt  had he known ( As parents would do in those times ) Regards Gordon.

I remember the smell of sugar beet every year when growing up in the 1980s. That's a smell I certainly do not miss!

Hello. My name is Sally. I no longer live in Peterborough but I have
fond early memories.
I lived in a flat with my mum in Cumbergate above a sweet shop. Can you
imagine, me, a little girl and all those sweets to choose from every
day. My mum used o wrap 2 2p pieces in paper and I always chose candy
sticks in a box. The shop was owned by Mr Cope and stood where part of
Queensgate is now. It had walls of sweets in jars and a proper till
with levers and abig wooden counter. I couldn't see over it though. Our
flat was damp and there was what I now realise to be mildew and mould
on the walls in the bedroom. I was nevet ill though, or at least I
can't remember. A bit further along and still standing is, what was
the White Horse public house, which my grandparents were the landlord
and landlady. I remember there was a chip shop next door, but I don't
remember eating any. I must have been poor. Out of the window to the
front were a line of pear trees always fully laden and a wall in front.
You could see and hear the cathedral in the distance especially on a
Sunday morning. The worst thing was the smell of the Sugar beet factory
and the smoke from the tall chimneys.
Does anyone have any pictures or cuttings please.Just to help my memory
Cheers
Sally (Cooke)

Hi Sally,

Cheers

Hi Gordon,

The bell was removed many years ago(around 1979-ish, I think). However, it was fully restored and is now on display inside the infant side of the school. I often pop into the school as the place I work for hires a couple of ex-classrooms there and the caretaker is the chairman of the local history society, so he kindly explained a bit of the history of the school to me. At some point I'll see if I can get a few old photos of the school and I'll also take a photograph of the bell as it is now.

By the way, not sure if it has already been mentioned, but the Walton infant/junior school is now called 'The Discovery School'.

Nik.

Hi Gordon,

The infant and junior schools are indeed still there but have been extended a lot over the years. The original school buildings still stand. The secondary school was demolished last Summer (see Peterborough In Pictures for photos) and replaced with a new building in what was the school field.

Hi Gordon. My Grandad lived in Mountsteven avenue, along that stretch
in the photo. I can remember visiting in the early 50's.

Can you remember the pond at the end of Mountsteven, at the junction
of Fulbridge Rd? And the donkey that used to be tethered there?

Also petrol pump on the same side, just inside Mountsteven Ave? Mr
Gore's grocery shop where the hairdresser's is now?

Hi again,Our house in Mountsteven avenue was No 50,right on the corner of churchfied rd.I remember we did have two apple trees there and one did indeed grow mistletoe I remember trying to get it to grow on the other tree, without success.Down churchfield rd on RHS was a family butchers at which I was the errand boy! I road that bike with a huge basket on the front miles all over Werrington Tues evening and Saturday,( I think ) That would have been around 1944.There was also a little fish and chip shop down an alley close to the butchers somewhere, perhaps your neighbours remember that ? I left the Walton County Mixed ( Mr Avery was head) To go to Kings school in 45. We now live in Devon but have relatives there still.Regards Gordon.

I live in Churchfield Road now, near Mountsteven Avenue, where I have
been for the last 25 years. I lived in Paston Lane from 1960 -1965.
I decided to move back to the Walton area because at that time it was
one of the least changed areas left since the 60's - not so much now.

The infant and junior schools are still there (as Nik has said), but
have amalgamated under one headship, now called 'Discovery'. Walton
Secondary School itself was demolished last year in favour of a multi
million pound school called 'Voyager'.

The allotments (or half of them) are still there, adjoining the rec.
The other half was built on some years ago for a very good complex for
the elderly called 'Bishopsfield'.

Unfortunately poor old Walton Rec, which used to be a peacable place
years ago has become a meeting place for anti social behaviour - the
cure of which, according to the Council, is to put a flood lit MUGA
(multi use games area)- currently at consultation stage. Not quite
sure if that won't encourage the behaviour, especially during the
winter months, when the perpetrators will be able to see better what
they are doing.

Anyway, getting back to your era, Gordon. (Do I take it you are no
longer in Peterborough?) When I used to walk to the junior school in
1960/61, that house on the corner used to have a very small 'orchard',
with one of the trees growing a very large bunch of mistletoe. I
think there were also some ducks (or geese) kept on that small piece
of land at the corner. Was it like that when you were there?

My neighbours opposite me have lived in their house for over 60 years.
I will ask them if they remember you, when I next see them.

Christine

Hi I've just discovered this group on peterboroughinpictures.
I identified with the message about going through the fence from
Newark Avenue, we lived on Garton End Rd and had a gate into the
school field, and we could walk through to the showground.

When I was very young we had a run away bullock come through the
garden from the show. Later after the show had moved to Alwalton we
used to play in the old grandstand, and I learnt to ride a motorbike
there as well.

I have created www.dogsthorpe.com because I am interested in the
history of the area where I have lived my whole life. Several people
have got in touch with me and given me information and articles for
the site. Does anyone have memories of Dogsthorpe?

Finally we have some proper flyers for the Sponsored Duck Race so I can pass
them on to you.

Please take time to check out the website and sponsor a duck (unlike a dog, a
duck is not for life, just for the race!!!) and also if you can think of anybody
who would be interested or any organisations who could distribute leaflets, let
me know and we'll post some out for you.

Thanks for looking
Jayne

Everyone,

Some of you will know that I lost my dad in December and life has
been very busy since then so I am afraid that the group has been
neglected. I was pleased to see, once I had been able to reactive my
email account etc., that it is still being used.

That being so, does anyone have any picturs of Bretton Woods School
before it was knocked down. I have a picture of the cleared site but
nothing of the actual school. Also, current ideas for development in
Bretton include the felling of trees that lead to Bretton Park from
Bretton Centre to encourage people into the park. I think that this
is a load of political correct brainwashing by the managers of the
people who have written this report. If people want to go to the
park and don't know where it is then signposts will solve the problem.

Any views on cutting down yet more trees and more building at
Bretton. The result, if these trees are cut down and the land built
on, will be greatly detrimental to the enjoyment of the homes of
people living in part of Benland.

Nice to be back with everyone. Marion

Deafblind UK is doing a fundraiser and asking people to adopt a plastic duck for
a duck race.

Check out the link below for a chance to raise money for charity and have fun at
the same time!

Does anybody else besides Elderly Mother (TM) and me know anything about May Goslings - May's version of April Fools day when you can play a trick on people on 1st of the month?

We always did it when I was a kid, but nobody else has heard of it that I've mentioned it to.

Its true, I'm not May Gosling-ing you! :o)
