Hello,

another note on isolation with AF transformers... Since the design is essentially balanced you can use twisted pairs on the audio lines connecting the transformers to the SDR and sound card.

Hi Stepan,

The huge capacitor C86 on the bias voltage can cause a high current peak through T4, therefore is better to get the bias from a simple 1:2 voltage divider.
This reduce also the sensivity for transients and noise on Vsupply from the USB host.
Furthermore the variable bias voltage is nearly unused from the 99% of users and can cause little spures about 70 kHz.

Probaly yes. You can check this with a surplus transformer from a old PSTN modem on one channel (I or Q). If the result is ok, then you can evaluate to buy a couple of high quality AF-transformers.

About the AF-transformers, i suggest to read this page: http://www.cliftonlaboratories.com/softrock_lite_6_2.htm
So i suggest to use the TRAID SP-70 as isolation between PMSDR and PC soundcard. A audio galvanic isolator kit  will be available within next week.

Hi Martin,
please can you go deep into the technical detail? What is benefit from bias fixed on Vsupply? How is it connected with central beat?

One more question. I successfuly solved the zero beat issue by using USB isolator, but as soon as I connect grounded antena (vertical) the very big central beat appears, probably due to ground loop hum between PC and grounded antenna.
It can be solved by adding RF transformer between antenna and PMSDR, but in this case I can not use internal Switchboard (transmitting through the PMSDR).
Is the solution to insert AF transformers into I and Q lines between PMSDR and PC soundcard??? I'm woried about some phase distortion on this transformers....
Any experiences, hints, ideas?

Thank you in advance!

I wil order 2 kits , you never now.

The audio isolator kit is olso available, you have to pay for quality.
Too bad there is a heat shrink as housing concubine.
Perhaps that comes later.

Keep up the good work.

Hi,

Yes, the SP-70 is a expensive component. I have just made some tests, and this transformers have a very good freq/phase response also with 192kHz sampling rate.
A brief documentation about the audio isolator will be available soon.

>>Too bad there is a heat shrink as housing concubine.
I know, but i will make soon also a small POM enclosure for this kit, like the enclosure for the antenna isolator.

To all:

To reduce the shipping costs for small orders, i just work to add a standard postal envelope shipping module in our webshop for orders below 20Euro.
In the mean time, you can order this component kit by email.
The postal shipping cost are about 4 Euro, but this shipping option is available only for customers inside the CE.

Good Evening All,
Things were going along well... I am now having a problems. A bit of info to
provide some thought.

Win XP Pro Service Pack 3.
2.5 GB Ram
2.09 Athlon XP Processor
WinRad 1.6.1 Build 116

Everything was working well until tonight. I had some XP updates to complete and
let them run. It appears something in the update has caused me some problems.

What have I done.
1. I reinstalled WinRad, still received the error.
2. Removed PMSDR files from the WinRad folder. When the files are not there in
the WinRad folder WinRad starts fine, no errors.
3. Added PMSDR files back into the WinRad folders and the errors occur again.
  a. Used PMSDR files from PMSDR_DLL_V35r1 and PMSDR_DLL_V36r1. Does not matter.
Errors occur with files from either DLL version.

Anyone else had these problems?

Thanks,
N8SKB

Martin,
any chance that the soundcard transformer kit could be provided without the
sp-70 devices in order that it will have a more realistic postage rate to the UK
(as it's price will fall under the 25 Euro)?
I don't think it is reasonable to pay over 28 Euro to post such a small kit that
in itself only costs 48 Euro.
The new shipping option is fine but has a limit based on price (25 Euro) and not
on size/weight.
I can obtain the SP-70 from a UK comapny at a reasonable rate.

Martin,

I would like to second this. With the kit in a jiffy bag, it would cost 2 or 3
euros to post a similar package from the UK to Italy.

Cheers,

Nick.

Hello,

I have my PMSDR frequency calibrated nicely via the PMSDR utility's advanced
settings using HDSDR. But I have a residual 28Hz frequency error when using
SDR-Radio, the 4,996KHz time signal appears on 4,995.972KHz.

Could someone tell me how to correct this please - I've been round and round in
SDR-Radio's configuration menus, but can't see how to achieve this.

Great piece of kit Martin! Moving to an E-MU 0202 with good quality cables made
an enormous difference.

Cheers,

Nick.

Hi,

i can raise the limit of 25 Euro to 50 Euro for the new shipping option. This isn't a problem for me, but the standard postage shipping have no warranty for the delivery. Other shipping options to outside Italy of the italian postal service are to expensive for my opinion. No comments about the services and waiting times in our postal offices......:(
Usually, there are no problems with the delivery, but only with the delivery time.

The soundcard galvanic isolator kit will remain available only as complete kit.

Another important note: due to (italian) tax laws isn't possible to sell V.A.T. tax free to customers outside of the EC for orders with a total amount below 154,94 Euro.

Best Regards,
Martin

Hi Martin and all PMSDR users!

Inspired by new SP-70 tranformer kit from Martin I bought just cheap 1:1
(600ohm/600ohm) AF transformers (2 EUR/pc) for testing.

The PMSDR works well with this transformers inserted into I/Q signal. On the
first look there is no quality or sensitivity difference even with 196k sampling
rate, but it needs more testing for final results.

What is funny, but logical - instead central "yelow" line (beat) there is now
"black gap". This gap is around 2mm on my screen with 96k sample rate.
My explanation for this is, that this is caused because of missing transfer of
lowest frequencies (DC to lowest AC transferable freq.)
Am I right?

Is this effect visible also with SP-70 transformers?

Thaks!

Hi Stepan,

i have measured the width of the "black gap" around the zero-IF with the SP-70 transformer: about 350Hz. (with a E-MU0202 as soundcard)

Hi Lorenzo,

there are a "soft-mute" function, which you can use if you have a firmware version 2.2r3, the DLL V3.5r0 or later with HDSDR.
This function allow to mute the audio output of HDSDR during the transmission through the switchboard.

A new free release of WRplus, 1.07 is available for download from www.wrplus.altervista.org .

This was unplanned but… Studio 1, the new application that will replace WRplus is still under development; as WRplus 1.06 expires at the end of November, a new release, 1.07 is available for download. I've received several emails about Studio 1: please be patient, I'm working hard to have the application ready as soon as possible.

Here in short the new features, modifications and corrections:

  • Efficiency improvements in FM wide mode
  • Slight improvements in SSB – ECSS audio quality

Please read the updated User Guide and the history.txt file before posting questions.

As always feedbacks and comments are welcome.

Thanks to all for the feedbacks and advices.

Hello

Now my PMSDR and SDR-RADIO.com works together without any dll plugin...

But i got the problem that the bandpassfilters do not switch! I have to switch
it to passtrought bevore i use sdr-radio.com
If i open the CFGSR SI570 Tool it say that this hardware has no ABPF.
Maybe the problem is because the pmsdr in si570 usb mode does not report any
bandpassfilters...

did somebody got a similar setup to work incl. the Filters?

hope that somebody have any solution for me!

thanks in advance!

Hi Yves,

CFGSR doesn't report the ABPF, but the firmware (V 2.3.0) of the PMSDR switch the filters automatically based on a static internal lookup table.
If you use CFGSR or SDR-RADIO.com, then the filter switchover is fully transparent and automatically. (Si570-USB Mode).

73 and a happy new year to all members of this group!

Hello All;

I bought my PMSDR 5 months ago and am just getting around to building the unit.

We have been getting emails from this group showing modifications, many changes in
software, etc, etc.

Went to the PMSDR pages and software pages but get confused trying to piece everything
together.

Currently my SDR has firmware 2.1.8, no receiver noise mods and no loaded software

Is there any single place that shows or explains all the new hardware, firmware and software (driver) changes that have been incorporated to date?

Tnx, 73

Hi,

During the last holidays i have made some tests on the latest version of the sound card "SoundBlaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro."
I must say i was quite surprised by its features, therefore i have wrote a short test-(and mods) report:

http://www.iw3aut.altervista.org/files/SB_Creative_XFi_Pro_USB.pdf

Due its attractive price, i think to keep it in mind as a sound card for QSD-based SDR receivers (eg SoftRock, PMSDR etc. ...)

Hi Martin,

Great analysis and MOD, thanks.  Have you run the same testing with the FA-66 Roland? I have not set mine up yet and was wondering if it’s performance is better relative to the SoundBlaster.
