Stay blessed,

Last year, two major events really made me stop and think. One of
them was the "Live8 – make poverty history" global concerts. The
other was the "G8 summit". I pondered if I was playing my part, to
the best of my abilities? By this, I am not only referring to
helping the poor or needy in far off lands. My thoughts were, "Am I
releasing what's in my hands (great or small) to those in my own
world? What more can I do to affect those near me?"
You see, you do not have to be a millionaire to give money nor do
you have to quit your daytime job to give just a little bit (more)
of your time to those around you. It's all about having a heart of
compassion along with a giving and loving heart. With these three
ingredients, everything else falls into place.
So are YOU playing your part as a citizen of planet Earth? Did you
know that sharing your gifts/talents along with your time is one of
the highest forms of giving? So are you simply living just for YOU
or do you regularly spare a thought for others and put action to
your thoughts? Now, I am not suggesting that you pack your bags
today and head off on a charitable mission to a 3rd world country
(though some of us need something along those lines). But what are
you doing with what's in your hands on a local level? What you were
blessed with was never meant to stop with you!
I believe there are people, both far and near, who crave your gift.
In fact I would go one step further to say some one out there is
actually praying for someone, uniquely talented like you, to come
into their life! You might think this sounds a tad far fetched but I
kid you not. I have been both on the giving and receiving end of
this and there is nothing like the joy of an answered prayer.
So whose prayer, wish or dream could you make a reality today?
PS: An action taken by you is a dream come true for one, an answered
prayer for another. In both cases, it's simply a miracle! GF

Charities Colour Blind Approach Disriminates Against Black Volunteers
31 May 2000
Noticeable by Their Absence, a new report published today by the
National Coalition for Black Volunteering, shows that black people
are under-represented as volunteers in charities. Covering 95
charities involving 263,000 volunteers the survey revealed:
1 in 2 charities did not monitor the ethnic make up of their
volunteers; even in areas of black population, 1 in 2 of agencies did
not monitor the ethnic make up of their volunteers
2 in 5 charities did not involve any black volunteers in their work
in charities using black volunteers, the percentage of black
volunteers to all volunteers was just 2%
more than 1 in 3 charities (43%) had no black trustees
The survey showed charities' lack of commitment to equal
opportunities practice. References to black stereotypes
on 'reliability' and staying with their 'own kind,' were revealed.
One respondent reported that their charity had to buy photographs of
black people for inclusion in their annual report to impress funders!
Last year Tony Blair launched a major Home Office funding programme
for Active Communities spending £17.5 millions on 130 charities.
Were government funded projects any better at monitoring black
opportunities? The Home Office was unable to give any figures on the
participation of black trustees, staff or volunteers involved in the
charities they funded. However the Millennium Commission not only
monitored its Award Scheme, but had allocated 13% of its award funds
to black and ethnic minority volunteers.
David Obaze, Director comments:
In the light of the Stephen Lawrence enquiry it is disappointing to
find that charities are not in the forefront of good equal
opportunities practice. Given that black people are
disproportionately affected by unemployment, it is shameful that
volunteering, which can bring so many benefits, is seemingly not on
offer to them. The Prime Minister talks of inclusion but black people
are excluded from the mainstream and there are precious little
resources for the black voluntary sector.
The National Coalition for Black Volunteering was set up in 1987. The
Coalition is a charity (reg, 1056991) and offers training on
involving black volunteers. The report Noticeable by Their Absence is

Never fight. Nothing is worth fighting for. Wisdom never fights, it
waits patiently, speaks positively, releases easily, sees benefit in
everything and envisions a future of abundance...knowing that all
needs will be met at the right moment, in the right way. If you think
life is a struggle you will always be struggling, If you think life is
a breeze, your attitudes and actions will convey lightness and
easiness. And that's what attracts everything you need, and much more.
Make today a breeze not a battle.

5th Annual Black Enterprise Awards seeks Best Businesses,
Entrepreneurs, Rising Stars and Corporate Leaders.
Take four burgeoning UK companies - The Black Farmer, Umbrolly,
PlantPal, and Yana. What do they have in common? They are run by
people with entrepreneurial zeal; and they all just happen to be
winners of the national awards scheme, Black Enterprise Awards.
To add to this hall of best businesses, entrepreneurs and corporate
leaders, Black Enterprise Awards is calling for nominations to its
fifth annual awards scheme.
Nominations open on 20 March 2006 and close 18 August 2006, and may
be made through the awards website at www.blackenterpriseawards.com.
The glittering ceremony will be held in spring 2007 at a prestigious
venue to be announced in the summer.
The ten open categories are Business Innovator, Rising Star, Emerging
Company, Entrepreneur of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, Young
Entrepreneur, Corporate Leader, International Business, Enterprise
Champion, and Employer of the Year.
Speaking about the awards, the organisers said: "We are delighted
that year after year Black Enterprise Awards unearths some real
businesses, entrepreneurs and corporate leaders, who but for these
awards will never be honoured nor receive the extensive marketing
platform we arrange for them. The range of entries alone is enough
evidence that African Caribbean and African British people make their
fair contribution to the economic well-being of the UK."
Speaking at the 2005 ceremony at The Guildhall, Mr Wilfred Emmanuel-
Jones of The Black Farmer fame and Entrepreneur of the Year 2005
said, "The award is something I was very surprised to get. It's my
first ever award, I never won any awards at school! And this one was
even better because it is from my peers".
So to my PPSN members, let's get cracking on and promoting ourselves
this year and perhaps next year we'll all be in line for one of these!

The Rise and Rise of Black British Entrepeneurs
(PPSN Members please try to attend)
The black business community forms a vital part of London's economy.
Today there are more than 10,000 black-owned private sector
businesses in London. Their combined annual turnover exceeds £4.5
billion, and they provide over 70,000* jobs to London's economy.
In celebration of this success, the British Library is holding a
panel discussion with four inspiring entrepreneurs from the black
community.
Come and hear them reveal the secrets of their success. Take the
opportunity to put your own questions to a panel of leading players
and to learn from their experiences. Enjoy an evening of networking
with BME business entrepreneurs.
The discussion will cover such key topics as: What first inspired you
to set up your own business? How did you get your idea off the
ground? What particular obstacles did you encounter along the way?
Where did you obtain your financial backing and business advice? What
are the personal qualities that drove you on to success? What is
needed to improve opportunities for the next generation of
entrepreneurs from the black community?
Moderator
Dotun Adebayo, Radio Five Live and BBC London Presenter, will chair
the discussion. Dotun currently hosts his own show, Up All Night on
national BBC Radio Five Live as well as BBC Radio London. As a child
he appeared on stage and in films. He was Music Editor at the Voice
newspaper, has written and presented documentaries for Channel 4, and
founded the X Press which publishes black fiction. He is currently
working on his first novel, Promised Land, charting 50 years in the
lives of Britain's richest black family.
Panel
Yana Johnson
Yana Johnson is the founder of Yana Cosmetics, delivering solutions
that capture the ethnic and European market alike. Prior to launching
her own line of cosmetics for women of colour, Yana had a successful
career in music. She wrote songs with Shola Ama, Roachford, Massive
Attack, and Ritchie Rich. Yana has won a number of awards including,
Black Enterprise, European federation of Black Women Business Owners,
Global Women Inventors Innovators award and Mahogany Brides. She is
now focused on expanding her Yana cosmetics brand into new markets.
Tim Campbell
Tim Campbell, 28, of Jamaican origin was born in East London,
Plaistow where he still lives with his family. Tim achieved instant
celebrity status when he secured a £100,000 a year job with Sir Alan
Sugar after winning BBC2's The Apprentice in 2005. No doubt his
psychology degree from Middlesex University helped him to win the
series. Tim's current role is as Project Director of Integra, a face
care system for Amstrad's health and beauty division.
Charles Ejogo
Charles Ejogo is founder of Umbrolly. Charles began his career in the
City but it was being made redundant as a 25-year old that spurred
him on to set up his own business. The idea for umbrella vending
machines came to him while stuck on the London Underground on a rainy
day. It took a lot of persistent negotiation to secure the rights to
install vending machines at tube stations. Despite failing to close a
deal on BBC2's Dragons Den, Charles has secured business angel
funding and has ambitious plans for overseas expansion.
Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones
Also known as "The Black Farmer", Wilfred has been a success in
various fields. He produced and directed food and drink programmes
for BBC TV before founding his own food and drink marketing company,
working with brands such as Lloyd Grossman and Kettle Chips. Finally,
he realised his ambition of having his own food brand when he bought
a farm on the Devon/ Cornwall border marketing The Black Farmer range
of sausages and sauces. In January 2005 Wilfred set up The Black
Farmer Rural Scholarship to give inner-city teenagers a taste of
rural life under his personal mentoring.

Getting your pitch just right (Taken from speed-networking.net)
So you can make the most of your time at our events, we have prepared
a few ideas to help you get your pitch just right. Its not difficult,
all you have to do is give a little thought to each of these aspects.
Know your business, and know it well;
Be able to describe what you do and who you do it for in a few clear
sentences; and
Know what you want and need from networking and what you have to offer.
Your networking pitch generally is sometimes called a 'lift statement'
or 'elevator pitch' as it should be something you can say in the time
it takes to go a few floors in a lift with a perfect stranger! Remeber
to listen as well as talk, especially when building your confidence.
Just doing it is great practice for your pitch and soon you will have
it finely honed.
Also do follow up contacts even if you think they are not going to
result in a lead right away. Building a large network means things are
much more likley to click into place for you and your business a
little way down the line.

I manage a team of complementary therapists and beauticians and
offer Pampering Parties and Corporate Massage.
I also offer private appointments where I practice a unique
combination of Holistic massage, Indian Head massage, spiritual
healling and colour healing therapy. I am currently studying
psychotherapy and dream analysis.
>
> How did you start:
I had the Pamper Party idea a few years ago but whilst studying my
chosen therapies I decided I would like to offer other services
also. Rather then being just a masseuse, I try to incorporate a
mind, body and spirit balancing experience.
>
> Where are you headed (your vision):
The bigger picture for me is to make people more aware of the way
their daily thoughts, words and actions impact upon their body,
spiritually and mentally as well as physically. When we take care of
what goes on within the mind, we need not become ill or build up
tension through stress. Through serenaretreat and the PPSN we will
build a positive community that which transform the world.
> What makes you unique:
I am people motivated not money motivated and refuse to practice a
procession line of therapy. My accountancy background makes it easy
for organisation and attention to detail to be paramount. Therefore
everyone I encounter leaves feeling positively renewed on every
level, whether it be through one on one sessions with me, the
creation of their ideal retreat at home when they book a pampering
party or the much needed time out achieved when they book my
therapists at their office.
>
> Who are your target market:
Pamper Parties are ladies only for the time being though I am
getting quite a few male enquiries. Everything else is for
everybody, you all need what I do.
