I guess preventing the windows from overlapping is best controlled by
your window manager. There are quite a few that can do this.

However, the decision if having no overlapping windows is really worth
choosing another window manager is up to you.

Subject: a convenient method for comparing two wave forms

Hello, everyone.

I would like to know a convenient method for comparing two wave forms by eye. My
method is like this (I think it is not so convenient):

1. In the Objects window, read two WAV file by using "Read from file...."

2. For the two WAV files, click "View & Edit" respectively. Now, Two EDIT
windows opened.

3. Copy the wave data from one EDIT window, and paste it to empty space of the
other EDIT window.

4. Now I can compare two wave forms within one Edit window.

Thank you for your advice^^

copy-paste doesn't sound very useful, because the two waveforms will not zoom
and scroll together. If you really want to see two waveforms more or less
aligned in one window, you can select the two mono Sounds, then choose "Combine
to stereo", then "View & Edit".

This said, having two windows can be more useful. You can synchronize their
scrolling, zooming and selection with the Group button.

Dear all,
I try to implement an application on a high level language. But I need to record
sound on my application, and then i will send it to praat and praat will run
scripts and return values for this sound. On which platforms can i import praat
to my application, and how can connect my application with praat?
Is there any sample that i can follow up?

Dear praat-users,

I'm trying to measure the spectral balance of syllables. To do so, I would need
Praat to measure each interval seperately in a Sound (as noted in a TextGrid)
and then give a mean intensity of long-term average spectrum for each
interval(divided into two frequency bands but that's beside the point at the
moment), but, so far, I only got it to measure the whole sound instead of the
intervals, and thus gives me a list of identical means for each interval.

Is it possible to get Praat to measure the intervals seperately, or do I need to
extract each interval one by one and then measure them?

Hopefully I explained my problem well enough to be understood and there is
someone out there who could help me with it.

Thank you.

you didn't tell us what precisely you were doing, but this sounds as if you were
writing a script, and did the exact same LTAS command at every turn through the
loop.

If you are writing a script, you should indeed extract each interval at its turn
in the loop.

If you are working in the TextGrid window, you can do "View spectral slice" in
that window, then "To LTAS" in the Objects window.

Subject: "Number of formants" and "Maximum formant"

Dear all

I read the answer that Dr. José Joaquín Atria wrote in 1/2/2012. When I analyze
formants of vowels, if F1 and F2 looks like wrong (for example, F1 and F2 are
merged), I usually change "Number of formants" to get right values, but "Maximum
formant" remains the same.

I would like to ask experts: if I change "Number of formants", it is usually
reduced by 1 or increase by 1, how many "Maximum formant" should be reduced or
increased by? Should "Window length" also be changed? I really need to change
"Number of formants".

Thank you for your help^^

"Number of formants", "Maximum formant" and "Window length" are parameters of
Formant settings menu in the Sound Editor window.

---------------- Below is quoted ----------------
> 2012/2/1 [praat-users] Re: Too low values?

Praat's formant detection has worked fine for me in the past as it is, but you
have to be careful when changing the values in the formant settings. You can't
simply change the amount of formants to look for and leave the "Maximum formant"
field as it is.

If you do, your values _will_ be off because you are basically telling Praat to
look for too many (or too few) formants in the same frequency space. The default
value of 5500 Hz for the maximum formant is good for five formants (no more, no
less). If you need less (or more) formants, you'll need to change that value as
well. However, I've had trouble finding a different maximum formant value that
works as well as that for a different amount of formants, so normally I stick to
the default values even if I need less formants for my own measurements.

Hope it helps.

This error cannot occur in the script you sent, because the "Down to
TableOfReal..." command doesn't occur on line 618, or even close to it.

You are apparently editing somebody else's very complicated 2000-line script.
That is tricky business if you have not read the scripting tutorial, which
explains when a command is available or not.

so I've been playing around with existing scripts to try to make it work for my

	 sentence Sound_file_extension .wav
	 comment Directory of finished files
	 text end_directory C:\Users\Simon\Desktop\Recordings Edited\Female\Low\A\
endform

Create Strings as file list... list 'sound_directory$'*'sound_file_extension$'

for ifile to numberOfFiles
	 filename$ = Get string... ifile

	 # A sound file is opened from the listing:

	 select Sound 'sound_one$'

	 Create PitchTier... 'sound_one$' start end

	 select all

	 Shift pitch frequencies... -20 Hertz

	 # Combine and save the resulting file:

	 Write to WAV file... 'end_directory$''filename$'

	 select Sound 'sound_one$'
	 plus Manipulation 'sound_one$'
	 plus PitchTier 'sound_one$'
	 Remove

it gets to the shift pitch frequencies line and throws out an error. Does anyone
see a reason why this is not working? I don't really know that much about praat

You can only Shift pitch frequencies on a Manipulation object. Was your
error message that "Shift pitch frequencies" is not available for
current selection? Instead of selecting all your objects, just select
the ones you want to apply the command to.

However, it looks like "Shift pitch frequencies" is only available
inside the Manipulation editor for Manipulation objects. You'll either
need to script the Manipulation editor:

http://www.fon.hum.uva.nl/praat/manual/Scripting_7_1__Scripting_an_editor_from_a\
_shell_script.html

or extract the pitch tier, shift the frequencies of the pitch tier, then
replace the pitch tier of the Manipulation object with the shifted pitch
tier.

Hope this helps,

Hello,

I am a grad student who is working with ultrasound video of articulation with
its accompanying sound files. If specs are needed: the video and audio was
simultaneously encoded into a digital .avi file (mono). I was using Wavesurfer
to analyze these files, but after our computers were upgraded to Windows 7,
Wavesurfer works in a glitchy way. I am trying to get around these glitches by
using Praat instead. I need to display speech sound analysis data with the
corresponding moment in the video file of the ultrasound, as I could in
wavesurfer. For example, a spectrogram could be generated below the video file
and the two were "synced" such that a moment isolated in the spectrogram would
be represented by the moment on the ultrasound video footage.

I have been trying to get Praat to open my .avi file, but I get an error message
that says that movie files are not supported by this version of Praat. Is this
because I am using the most current version of Praat? Older posts on this forum
seem to suggest that .avi can be used on the 5.1.7, but I could only find the
5.3.09 version on the Praat Web site.

Thank you for any help you can give me. It's very appreciated.

I'm trying to define an experiment using ExperimentMFC. When I try to have a

This is defined with something similar to this example:

startText = "This is a listening experiment.
After hearing a sound, choose the vowel that is most similar to what you heard.

Click to start."

But all I get is a single line in the welcome screen. Can anyone explain how to

well no, it gives the cursor location if nothing is selected.

A better (and faster) way to shift the pitch is not to use the Manipulation
window, but the commands in the Objects window:

pitch = Extract pitch tier
Shift frequencies... 0 1000 -20 Hertz
plus manipulation
Replace pitch tier

Hi all,

I'm somewhat of a new user with Praat, at least with more detailed
ideas. I'm currently working on Uduk, a Nilo-Saharan language spoken on
the border of Ethiopia and Sudan, trying to figure out their vowel
system, as it's been challenging to see whether ATR is really playing a
role in the language or not.

I thought to do something like this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9706227/Praat-example.png , where I segment each
word and then measure the vowels, afterwards sorting to see if there is
any sort of significant grouping.

I'm running into a few small problems, and checking the earlier messages
didn't seem to help. I also thought to ask the more technically skilled
individuals about the possibilities of automating something I'm doing.

As you can see from the screenshot, I'm running Linux, with SCIM/KMFL as
my main method for input of IPA. For some reason, Praat seems to be
disabling SCIM in the text grid, and I can't switch to any other
keyboards. Anyone know why this might be? It's the first time I've
seen this.. every other program I use can switch between different
keyboards without a problem. I can open up gedit and copy/paste IPA
into Praat, but this is rather inconvenient, but I'd rather input
unicode directly.

Also, how do I change the font and font size of the text grid? For the
formant measurements, the font is huge, and doesn't fit. While this
won't really prove a problem later on when editing the text file
directly, it's rather inconvenient when actually looking at the text
grid in Praat. I can't seem to find the options for fonts in the text
grid, only for the picture.

Regarding the formant measurements, is it possible to automate this in
any way? E.g. that I segment everything accordingly, then tell it to
measure F1 and F2 for all vowels of {} and put it into the tier grid? I
have no clue how I would go about doing that, as it goes far beyond my
technical skills, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks, and greetings from a new user on the list :)

Best Regards,

Don

Check this link:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SCIM#Incompatibilities_with_Some_Applications

You can follow the instructions on that page (which should work for all
programs) or set up an alias for praat so that calling praat executes the
following command:

GTK_IM_MODULE=scim XMODIFIERS="@im=SCIM" praat

However, note that if the characters you input are not listed here:

http://www.fon.hum.uva.nl/praat/manual/Special_symbols.html

they won't actually display on the TextGrid editor. They will, however, be
saved in the file, only not displayed (this happens, for example, with
Japanese characters).

As for the formant measurements, there are a number of scripts out there
that do what you need, but you could have something like the following
(which I haven't tested):

# sound = id of your sound file
select sound
formant = To Formant (burg)... 0 5 5500 0.025 50
# intervals = the number of intervals in your textgrid
for i to intervals
label$ = Get label of interval... segmentTier i
if index_regex (label$, "[aeiouAEIOU]")
select formant
# time = some time value for each interval

f2 = Get value at time... 1 time Hertz Linear
select textgrid
Set interval text... formantTier i F1 'f1:0', F2 'f2:0'

You got me on the font size and automatic segmentation, though. Maybe
someone else has something more to say on this.

Hope this helps.

I normally analyse all my audio in praat, and I've written scripts in praat in
order to extract the information I've wanted, and then written java code to
analyse this information. but i also want to analyse the video .

i know this is slightly off topic, but does anyone have a recommendation for a
software package that will analyse video too? should i then integrate that with
Praat? or use something else to analyse the audio and video together? I've
never analysed video before.

in the TextGrid window, look under Preferences in the File menu.

that's probably because those other programs use your system's locale setting.
Praat always uses the C locale on Linux, because its text output has to look the
same on all computers. Otherwise, Praat would start to behave like e.g. SPSS,
where it is a nightmare to exchange text data between computers (e.g. decimal
commas versus points).

So it might help to add C to the SupportedUnicodeLocales in ~/.scim/global, or
any other of the other twenty suggestions described in
help.ubuntu.com/community/SCIM#Incompatibilities_with_Some_Applications to get
the SCIM product to work. If José's trick works for you, then that's also fine
of course.

you can use ELAN to view and analyse video. ELAN has a button to send its audio
to Praat.

(in a hidden corner, Praat can show sequences of video frames as well, but this
is not yet ready for general use)
