Sad to see it go, love it or hate it, it truly was an iconic image
of the fanbase over the years.

---------------------------------------------------------------
We almost made it to seven years. From a small Games Workshop
rumours website on free webspace to a dual Xeon 2.4 GHz monster
dedicated server with 100,000+ visitors a month, Portent has grown
from a fun idea in my head to something far greater than I could
ever have anticipated. Sadly, all good things must come to an end.
The end result of the recent server troubles is that we no longer
have the Portent data, aside from a year old backup. Unfortunate as
this is it's almost as if fate has forced our hand. I can no longer
provide the time or finances that Portent requires, not by a long
shot. For Nick and myself Portent has practically been a second job.
You can only take so many abortive glimmers of hope before you
realise it's time to move on.
There are far too many people to thank before the curtain closes
here. Most important of all, Nick has been a complete legend – there
are very few people who would do so much for nothing but the odd
beer. Portent would have vanished many moons ago without his
technical expertise and I'm sure the rest of Portent has just as
much to thank him for as I do.
A mere step below Nick in the grand scheme of things are the
Inquisitors. I have, and I can say this having administered forums
professionally, the best mod team I could ever ask for. Despite
countless challenges they've been instrumental in tirelessly turning
the Portent Forums into a great place to discuss wargaming and more
besides. Every single one of you regular members who've posted (and
not been banned, at least) deserves my thanks too, in particular
those who helped support Portent by becoming Guilders. Seeing the
end to such an amazing community is unquestionably the worst thing
about this. Without you guys I probably would have closed the site
long ago, having such a great community made it that much harder.
The chaps at the studio have all proved themselves to be total gents
whenever we've spoken. Andy, it was always a pleasure to catch up
with you at Games Days, I hope things are going well at Mongoose.
Gav, many thanks for attending the tourney and posting on the
forums. Paul, cheers for putting aside a foolish rumour from long
ago and posting on the forums, I appreciate it. Robin, that studio
tour was extremely cool and a much appreciated gesture, I hope to
catch up again some time. And finally, I'll never forget Rick
Priestly, immortal grand chief games designer supreme, catching me
at the last minute before I left that studio tour to essentially
say "Hi, and good work on Portent".
And last of all, the web stores who occasionally advertised with
Portent. The Warstore was our longest running advertiser, albeit on
and off. It's also one of the best places around to order miniatures
and Neal is just a damn nice guy to do business with. Also check out
Chelgames (UK), Whites of their Eyes (Warmachine), Battle Pack and
Wargames Dungeon, they've all supported Portent over the years.
After thanking so many people it almost feels wrong to turn
critical, but some people really do deserve it. Great Canadian
Miniatures were invariably rude whenever we talked via email – if
none of you guys ever did business with them again I wouldn't be too
upset. And whoever it was at GW US that ultimately decided online GW
retailers in the US were "riding on the coat tails of brick and
mortar stores" was laughably short sighted indeed, particularly
given the real reason for the decision.
Well, the letter I never wanted to write has already got far longer
than I expected. We'll be turning the server off for good on March
20th and then selling it to recoup costs which, sadly, run well
beyond what the server sale will recoup, but c'est la vie. We had
hoped to keep Portent running for the last week of its existence but
sadly the database loss means we can't do that. Instead, please join
#portent on Efnet IRC, I'll be hanging around there and I'm sure
many others will once they read this.
If any Guilders would like a refund on the remainder of your fee
past site closure, drop me an email and I promise to sort that,
we're not here to rip anyone off. Please email me at
portent.webmaster@... with any such requests.
Lavfluris is looking to continue his tournaments and I'll be helping
him with that however I can. Some of the mods are also looking into
starting a new community, though it will be a separate effort from
myself and Nick beyond what initial help we can offer – email
portent.oracle@... if you'd like to help. Keep an eye on this
page for news of both things.
It has been an incredible journey, but it really is over. Thank you
one and all for helping make Portent something special, I hope
you'll all remember it for as long as I will.
Best of luck to you all, and not just with the dice rolls.

You are quite right of course, maybe 'slum' is too stronger a word,
though I feel there should still be the typical Hive Underclass area,
maybe given they are basicly based on 19th Century English Troops
this underclass area could be based on the poorer area's of London
(for example) in this time period? What do you think?

Greeting Rob,
glad to see your working on background. I'm not too sure about the
concept of slums in a Praetorian hive though as they supposedly are
all about appearance. In the description provided with the limited
edition box it stated that they were so proper as to make sure their
uniforms were immaculate and buttoned up even during intense
fighting. with this in mind, i see their hive as being one of the
cleanest and effeciently run operations in existence. just my 2 cents
though.

I've made a start to creating a more cohearent background for
Praetoria and hoping we could make this a project for all, I'm not
sure about you guys but I find the 'Royal House of Wellington' and
similar ideas a little cliche, given that all we have 'officially'
is that Praetoria is a Hive World I'm making a start on the
Praetorian System, this document can be found in the Files section
on site and is called 'Praetoria.doc'.
Alot of the names I've taken for the worlds in the system are latin
at the moment, though I'm thinking these could be more appropriately
named perhaps?
As to Praetoria, as said it's a Hive World, at the moment my vision
would be that it's not a typical Necromunda Style Hive World, more
that the cities are more open Hives, a typical 'slum' district with
a raised and open upper level? Each hive would then be surrounded by

Hello,
I'm Maarten, and i've been playing 40k for about 8 years now. 'm a
huge IG-fan, and i've got a platoon (C-squad+ 3 squads) of every
regiment, but my main army is based around a platoon of praetorians.
It's called the 4th Hollan Emperor's Own Motorized Line infantry
regiment, 3rd company 'the ostriches'.(originating from Hollan, makes
the troops Hollanders, and since I'm dutch....). It has a slight
south african (zulu-war) theme to it. It consists of one platoon of
praetorians and two platoons of 'native' contingent.(mordians). I
really like the fluf-side of the game, and my army used to reflect
that, but after winning maybe one or two games in six years time I
decided to go easy on the fluf and include some more efective units
(tanks) and spend less points on fluf equipment. when i get my hands
on a digital camera I'll put up some pics of my army.
I uploaded the shots I took at GW Halifax. The terrain looks nicer
than my blank white backdrops but the incandescent lights in the
bunker were bad. My flash went off for every exposure and did a
fine job of uglifying the models. Please believe me they look
better in natural lighting.

Definately does not blow lol, do you have any pics of the completed
project? Would love to see that! An I do like your idea of stripping
down the gun crew, never would of thought of that one, might have to
borrow that idea!
Anyone who has any pics feel free to chuck em on here, especially
conversion ideas!
Hope no one minds, I wanted to share some photos of my regiment.
The WIP shots are a little old, I finished the project about a month
ago. It's all I have at the moment because my army is at the local
GW shop. If you think the content blows delete it but if you think
it's all right I'll take some finished shots when I go in the shop
this Saturday.

I've tried a few methods, including both modelling my own (never
uniform enough) and molding them, I've come to the conclusin that
really the only way to get a satisfactory helmet is to buy propper
casting kit, which really is a little expensive.

Hello,
It's good to see a group dedicated to praetorian guard. I don't
actually play my guard as praetorians (A DIY regiment utilizing the
models actually) but look forward to finding a group to exchange
ideas with who have an appreciation for such great models.
My own regiment is the XI Juran Expeditionary Rifles, a jungle world
based force with a highland flavor (think safari, dinosaurs and
trews). The whole force is a revision of my old 3rd edition
Napoleonic Russian styled force (IX Tirnov).
I've lurked on the Portent forums for about half a year and finally
decided I'd make a post for a change. While doing so I ran into
Col. Gravis' link to this site and decided to check it out. My
revised army is only about 50% complete but I'd like to take part in
the commuinity just the same. If you are looking for some photos to
fill up some space in the gallery say the word and I can probably
grab some WIP and completed squad shots by the end of the week.

Coverage is the way to go I guess, show a concerted fan base, I
guess partly then its a case of making sure theres a Praetorian army
at as many official tournaments and events as possible lol

True, though judging by the historical release of FW tank kits, and
the models used to help showcase them, someone at FW has really
liked the Tallarns.
I find the GW refusal to even type the name "Praetorian" in the
guard codex the most worrying part.
Of course, with the years of incessant whining by others how limited
is not limited enough.... they may have gone the 'well fine
then ...' (damned if you do, damned if you don't)
As for FW models only, your suggestion of tournie coverage
(particularly GW ones) is really good, and we may have a shot (a
small one) for a far off project if we can head off any players bent
on advocating squat whine tactics.
hmm, that seems a strange thing to say as the Tallarns could be
classed as being in the same boat, well i suppose the only way to do
something is to play more and more games and tourneys with the
Praetorians
I konw Owen Rees of the UK web Team reasonably well, i'll see if i
can get him interested in the project

Bit of a let down, but well I guess it was to be expected, still as
you say we must continue! If they see an active base they may still
consider it for the future ;)
Sad to say they have turned us down here is the text
Hi
FW have no plans to miniatures for the Praetorians I'm afraid. Our
schedule
is very full for the foreseeable future, and Praetorians are rather
a
minor
minatures range for such a large amount of support. Sorry it'll have
to
be
conversions.

I've just just uploaded two files to the Vault, the first is my old

It's far closer to the Napleonic Structure of a British Regiment of

thoughts you've got even if you've never considered it before! ;)

Good to see so many Praetorian players/owners here so soon!
I've just quickly typed up the 'official' background material as
supplied with the original limited edition box set, from here it's
down to us!
Hi I'm Swamp Dweller from Portent. Got into 40k near to the end of
2nd ed and got Orks and Praetorians. When 3rd ed came out I moved
on to Catachan (argh!) and then Cadian and armoured company. Now
i'm back to Praetorians.
My real name is also Rob, i'm 16 from the UK and spend my spare time
between 40k and revising for A levels!
Greetings. I'm from the portent board as well. I got into 40k in the
waning days of 2nd ed. Played praetorians when finding someone to
ally with as I couldn't afford enought IG troops back when they were
all metal and came in squad boxes. Haven't played in a few years, but
i'm excited to work on my armies again. I'm also a serious war film
buff so if anyone has any movie questions feel free to dro me a line.
I'm Wampa on portent or you can call me Dennis.
Cheers
Hey everyone. This is Sofa King from the board. My real name is
Morgan but I also respond to Johnny Nakamizo but most of the time as
Colonel Kilgore(legal alias' from different regions). I've been
playing WH40K since 2nd Ed, got back into things for a bit in early
3rd, messed with GorkaMorka back in the day(as well as Space Hulk
waaaaay back when) and am now rebuilding several armies from the
ground up as almost every since figure I owned was stolen when I moved
away from San Diego back in 2002. I'll have some of my conversion
stuff up as soon as I'm able to get some of my models worked
on(difficult to base coat in winter). Thanks again to ColGravis for
setting up the group.

Well I am Clark and I have Praetorian... ooops wrong script.I too am
from portent and am known there as Hooter Hunter. Just call me
Hoots. I've been playin' since the beginnin' of 3rd edition and have
a massive Praetorian army. Nearly 2k pts just in infantry. I have
converted them with green stuff hats and painted them to look like
1863 CSA infantry they are known as the Carolon Guards.
Well whats the best way to start?
By introducing ourselves I suppose!
I'm Rob, aka ColGravis on Portent, I've been playing 40k since the
release of 3rd Edition, though most of my early games where played in
2nd Ed rules, I've been playing Imperial Guard Praetorians pretty
much since the word go, with my Regiment the 57th Praetorian 'The
Diehards' based on the real life 57th British Regiment of Foot
(Middlesex).
