Hello fellow Praet commanders! It's been a while since I've posted,
but I'm back in the game. I decided to start at the basic concept stage.
I'm constructing my force with a few units in mind. First, the regular
line infantry (of course), then an armored company, an irregular
detachment (think Natal Mounted Police), and possible a regular
mounted detachment. I have a lot of names in mind for the various
units, and I'd like your opinions as to which names work best for each
one.
Also, for their banners and such, I've included working mottos for
each force. I've taken these from mottos within the British and French
armies from the 18th-20th centuries.
Line Infantry:
Lord Emperor's Imperishables
Emperor's Own Fusiliers
Regent's Honourable Guards
Pratoria's Carbineers
Royal Rifles
Royal Buffs
Motto: Dant Otia Vires - Repose gives strength.
Mounted Regulars:
Praetorian Mounted Rifles
Royal Mounted Rifles
Red Vanguard
Honourable Mounted Hussars
The Indefatigable Lancers
Motto: Nulli Secundus - Second to none.
Irregulars:
Frontier Light Foot
Mounted Rifles
Border Irregulars
Motto: Certa Cito - Swift and sure
Mounted Police:
Praetorian Mounted Authority
Praetorian Constabulary
Motto: Exemplo Ducemus - Lead by example
(may also include commissars, which will merely be Praetorian Sergeant
1 with his sword replaced by a nightstick, pained black and perhaps
with a badge modeled on; I had the same idea for Mordian Sergeant 1
with checkers pained around his cap brim)
Looking forward to feedback!
Greetings fellow Guardsmen!
I'm not new to the Praetorian scene, but I am to the web community...
This time last year I realised there was no background that anyone had
ever written about Praetoria (bear with me, I know better now) and
decided to hammer some together for myself. I sent a copy of my
document to the Black Library, but they never replied. A few weeks ago
I joined the Boot Camp Forum, to gain advice from my fellow guardsmen.
My quest yielded little, but by happy chance I encountered a link to
this group.
What I'm basically trying to find out is; What background for our brave
Pith-Helmeted troops is there? Where can it be found? Is it canon? has
all my work been in vain? And is this really Home Brew I'm sipping - or
is it something else?
Here, at least, is my version of Codex Praetoria.
http://z4.invisionfree.com/Boot_Camp/index.php?showtopic=7930
cheers,
AINV
The only canon description of Praetoria comes from the box set
released in the 1990s. You can find that in the Files section of this
group under "PraetorianBoxsetBackground.rtf"
This (though possibly claimed by the poster) was actually posted by
Chosen Man in 40k Online, according to Col. Gravis:
http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/praetorian-IG/message/53
However, your best go is from Col. Gravis' own description also in the
files section named "Praetoria.doc"
Gravis, as you will soon learn, is His Majesty's Right Honourable High
Governour General Lord Admiral of Praetoria. He's your best source,
I'd say.

Cheers. it seems there's a few versions of Praetorian background, but it's always been my intention to attempt to gather together all the disparate strands of background from every source possible. Nice troop names by the way.

To echo what has been said previously, jolly good!
Hello chaps, I thought that I should introduce m'self. My name's Zach,
aka Lord Whitlow over at the Boot Camp forums. I'm currently building
up the 32nd Praetorian Foot, complete with line infantry, light
infantry, and grenadiers (hopefully, hehe). Oh, not to mention with a
special detachment from the 95th Praetorian Rifles.
I'm still pretty new to the game itself, but I'm learning! As a side
note, I'm also good friends with KillCavalry, who is the one who got
me into all of this to begin with.

I've seen the regimental colours of Whitlow's 32nd Regiment...anyone
else have an ensign they'd like to share?
You'd best post yours while you're at it, Whitlow.

I joined this group mainly for nostalgia reasons about a year ago, but have never really got back into playing unfortunately- not too familiar with the newer ruleset (in terms of army structure etc) but if memory serves I have about 3 full unpainted (I was always rubbish anyway!) companies of Praetorians, as well as 30-odd Praetorians wearing Shako helmets (can't remeber the name of the regiment they were being converted to!)
Anyway I've decided it's unlikely I'll get back into the game (not enough time these days) - would anyone be interested in buying any of them? If so I can happily host some images on the web- otherwise I'll be sticking them on ebay soon, and will post links to the auctions.
Cheers, Matt

By the way, what I said previously was a misleading mistake- under the old army structure I have 4 platoons, making up one company- about 2000 points. Plus the 36 converted guys with Shako helmets. The photos are based around the old platoon structures for grouping purposes- if anyone wants to buy bits and pieces from different photos/groups- no problem :)

If anyone is interested in any of it, could you please email me specifying what bits you are interested in, then I can figure out relative prices. If more than one person is interested in the same stuff, I'll probably put it on eBay to ensure impartiality, and post the auction links.
Oh and I remebered that the 'shako' troops were going to form a platoon of Pyran dragoons- there's some resources through google if anyone is interested in taking the concept further.

Since I recieved interest from a number of you in the same units, I've started listing the troops on ebay.co.uk.
So far I've listed the Pyran Dragoons (just search for 'Pyran' and they should show up if you're interested), as well as the painted (albeit rather poorly) platoon of Praetorians (just seach for 'Praetorian') into 2 complete lots.
I've also split the Platoon with the rocket launcher heavy weapons squad up into individual squads (again search for 'Praetorian')
That's all that is presently listed.
The platoon with the Lascannon heavy weapon squad has been split into separate squads and the auctions are scheduled to start on the 25th November 7.30pm (GMT) The platoon with the Autocannon Heavy weapons squad will be listed as a complete platoon and is scheduled to start on the 2nd December 7.30 pm (GMT) Both of these can be found again by searching for 'Praetorian' (once the auctions have started).
Postage costs in the UK will be as listed in the auction- for overseas bidders postage will be as follows-
Complete Platoon - US $20, Canada $21, Australia $25 Individual squad- US $11, Canada $12, Australia $14.
There will of course be a postage discount for multiple items bought.
Hope that is of interest to some of you. Apologies to those of you who have already expressed interest in buying privately- as I've said there were conflicting offers on some of the units, so I decided ebay is the safest most impartial way to do this :)
Cheers everyone, Matt

If i could not purchase a unit from you i would prefer another member of this group have gotten the figures instead of them going to ebay for all to bid on perhaps going to someone from outside this group. That being said I step off my sopabox and hope you get good money for them. It's the holidays so ebay is packed with shoppers- especially for 40k since apocalypse was released. The forgeworld and armorcast i had I sold for double what they were going for last year and more than I paid .
Best of luck

Hi everyone,
Since I recieved interest from a number of you in the same units, I've started listing the troops on ebay.co.uk.
So far I've listed the Pyran Dragoons (just search for 'Pyran' and they should show up if you're interested), as well as the painted (albeit rather poorly) platoon of Praetorians (just seach for 'Praetorian' ) into 2 complete lots.
I've also split the Platoon with the rocket launcher heavy weapons squad up into individual squads (again search for 'Praetorian' )
That's all that is presently listed.
The platoon with the Lascannon heavy weapon squad has been split into separate squads and the auctions are scheduled to start on the 25th November 7.30pm (GMT) The platoon with the Autocannon Heavy weapons squad will be listed as a complete platoon and is scheduled to start on the 2nd December 7.30 pm (GMT) Both of these
can be found again by searching for 'Praetorian' (once the auctions have started).

Well I hope I haven't offended anyone- it certainly wasn't my intention. And I agree after having seen some of the conversion work by members in this group, that the best home for these minatures would be with one of the group members. But the simple dilemma is that if someone emails me saying they'll pay £ X for something, and then someone else says they'll pay £ X+1 for the same figures, how do I convey the message that the original offer has been outbid with any credibility on my part? I could be making the whole thing up for all you know! :D
And unfortunately having just graduated my finances are in such a dire state I can't afford to operate on a first come, first served basis I'm afraid. So while it is the run up to Christmas, and demand may be high, so too is supply- there are quite a few Praetorian lots on ebay at the moment- prices aren't noticably higher than usual for these minatures.
Anyway, it's nice to see such a group thriving- brings back fond memories of my gaming days!
All the best for the festive season chaps!

Financially you chose the best option. I was serious in stating that I hope you get good money for them.
It is holiday season AND apocolypse season so you should do well.

I have to say I think you took the best option, and I'd certainly
encourage anyone else thinking of selling items to likewise either
sell through ebay (feel free to post links to your auctions), or set
a fixed price, first come, first served kinda thing.
Tradings all good though, indeed I'd encourage it if your after a
specific bit or model, there may be someone out there who can help!

member of this group have gotten the figures instead of them going
to ebay for all to bid on perhaps going to someone from outside this
group. That being said I step off my sopabox and hope you get good
money for them. It's the holidays so ebay is packed with shoppers-
especially for 40k since apocalypse was released. The forgeworld and
armorcast i had I sold for double what they were going for last year
and more than I paid .

Hi, I have just started a Praetorian Guard force. I've been meaning
to do it for ages and finally got round to it! Love the stuff you are
doing Col. Gravis. I've been watching your Leviathan project with
interest!
TOM
Great to have you on board. Welcome to the group, we are gradually waking up after a period of dormancy. Many of us are members of Boot Camp Forum, if you want to talk to a wider IG community. AINV (Major of the LVIII)

Welcome! Does your force have a name (i.e. regiment number, expedition
name, etc) or theme (redcoats, khaki, white, blue, green)?

Hi,
Thanks for the warm welcome. Yes there is a name - Praetorian XXXIII
- Lord Cambrax's Fusiliers - 7th Company. It is a small expeditionary
force sent to the planet of Sargassus, a wild and bitterly cold rock,
to protect a small Praetorian mineral survey team. On making
planetfall the team quickly discovered that the planet was already
the backdrop to a brutal free-for-all involving Ork, Eldar, Chaos and
Dark Eldar forces. This small band of plucky chaps have found
themselves fighting for their lives against much greater numbers.
Requests for support have been sent back home and reenforcements are
on the way!
In the real world (!) myself and some friends are playing two
simultaneous campaigns one 2000pts, in which I am playing my Iyanden
Ghost Warrior force and a much smaller 750pts campaign. It is in the
smaller of the campaigns that I am fielding my Praetorian
Expeditionary Force.
Hope that gives a bit of background to where I am coming from. I will
upload some pics to give you an idea of what I am doing.

Someone else using the Fusiliers title! My own regiment are the LVIII Praetorian Fusiliers. One of the nice things about this group is that people follow up their armies with proper background detail. Hope to see pics soon!
