Hi
Maybe I am being incredibly stupid but I am not sure what you mean by
"sold before any bids were put on"
Are you saying a buy it now price used?
Or that somewhere else in another sale they were sold and now the same
puppets are appearing again
Did the person called Ella pay via paypal or credit card?
I am confused by the story can you run through it step by step for
idiots like me please.

I'm afraid we might hear more stories like this while this recession
holds.

I see your point but the person who told me said it tightens the twist
or slackens it.
If it tightens it then it snaps and if untwisting it loosens the fibres

I doubt that it will affect how I pack my puppets greatly as the
person was talking about constant packing, unpacking and performing on
a daily basis where a broken string in the middle of a performance can
be a nightmare - so you do everything to cut down any wear and tear so
you bag the puppets up and either use an S frame to hold the strings
or wind round the top of the bag.

It was just interesting to note that this could be a factor in the
wear of Pelham strings

there were two main types the mini display's which were sold to the
shops and were designed specifically for the smaller shop with little
space and the bigger ones which were rented to the larger stores or
sold abroad.
they were never sold as slot machines these were made by Mayfield
electronics and i believe by Comptons This is why the puppet boxes had
the license warning on them.
Although it is possible that some owners could now have made their
larger displays into pay to watch this was never the intention for
ther use

Really? So spinning the strings round into one does more harm than
good??? Whats an alternative if you have loose pelham puppets which
you want to store without getting their strings tangled up?

Well Technically it is supposed to be 18/3 polished linen thread.

It seems that this was used by the saddlery and carpet industries as
well as show manufacturing. Now it has been replaced with a man made
and more robust fibre or the process changed altogether so the need
for it has almost disappeared.
The only area still using it seems to be book binding.

You can get 18/4 which is slightly thicker as it has four strands in
its make up but poses problems because the knots are slightly bigger
etc and it does not hang as well as the thinner.

A very experienced puppeteer once told me that the worst thing you can
do with the carpet thread is to spin the puppets around on themselves
because this opens up the twist of the thread and so breaks it down
even more quickly. .... Interesting!

Well I am sorry you have also had a run in with the attitude from that
site and some of its "friendly" but highly delusional members.
There are a growing amount of people who seem to have also fallen foul
of a certain "faces" antics, so if I were you I would wear it as a
badge of honour.
I suspect it is especially galling when it's part of your business and
possibly doing it harm by showing pictures of it half finished.
Then just to be shrugged off as if there is no implication.
I should not be surprised though having seen the badly restored and
doctored goods sold as genuine items over ebay, It seems scruples are
scant in certain peoples minds.

As for the prices at the moment on ebay, They are pretty extreme in
areas, and this can spill out onto the Antiques Market, oh well at
least some sellers are going to have a good christmas.

Now i'm just gonna route out an old minipup ceasar and a jumpette
florence and then book my ticket on a round the world cruise.....

and there again ... maybe not!

LOL do you think that could stand up in a law court?

"yeah your honour, I know I stole everybody elses work, mixed it up
with un researched nonsense of my own and then copyrighted as being
all my own work but i'm not nasty and deceitful, it's everyone else
who is nasty your honour"

I realise that we all use reference sources and will always be quoting
from this and that source etc which is where I think the saying stems
from but if Imitation is the highest form of flattery, this is like
Frakensteins monster gatecrashing your own party and pretending to be you.

Hi Steve, I know the confrontation started to get a bit out of hand.
There are loads of things I found out about the seller which I could
say but I'll shut up for now unless anything is said about me again. I
heard about the facebook thing as a notice was sent out but I didn't
have any involvement with that. You're welcome to my yahoo site though

Open message to you all. The date I have been given for the release of
the book is Oct 27. It will be available from my new website and
bookshops in the UK and USA and I believe Canada. The publisher is
Crowood Press.
The date of the website going live is: I do not know!
All I know is that it is in the finishing stages and I hope it will be
up and running later this week. When it is I will let you all know.
What I can tell you, is that, in fact it will never really be complete!
I intend to update it every few weeks to keep it fresh and lively.
There will be a discussion forum, a quarterly edition of PELPUP NEWS
21, (there will be a small annual subscription charge for this) there
is the puppetry shop, several sections about the history, a Pelham
Puppet parade, that will be added to as an ongoing project.
Our aim is to make it the Home of Pelham Puppets with pages that I hope
will interest collectors and part of it will be the section where the
new puppets and associated items, new book of plays, props scenery
etc., will be obtainable.
It will all happen in stages, not all at once. A huge amount of work
has gone into the whole project, I have had a great amount of support
from several people and, whilst I know, "you cannot please all the
people all of the time, we will try to please most people, most of the
time!"
If you think you are having a hard time waiting for all this to happen,
try and imagine what it is like for poor little ol' me!
Anyway, thank you all for your comments and for your interest in my
efforts, but I must add that several people have helped greatly with
this, it is not, and I will never claim it to be, one man's work.

Mike.. you are a very very good painter I must say.
And it's funny. those are the heads that I'm not too fond of on the snow white.I like he earlier ones from he fifties with the eyes on an angle. The detail on Jack is great .
I live in Chicago and my Sister lives in Detroit. together we make puppets and we are constantly sending pics of Ideas. Feel free to send me new stuff if you want.
Though I am a modernist in ideas , I am not in materials. so I tend to stay away from polyesters and stick to silks and wools and such.... Having said that, I DO love resins , and aluminum for the bodies. Just a personal choice. It would be interesting to hear what you have to say about that...BTW you are also a fantastic tailor.
I'm hear on yahoo messenger so feel free to drop me a chat.

Mike:I have ordered my book from Amazo,co,uk And yes it will ship to the U.S. I
didn't use
the express shipping on the count that the book is not in yet.... I figured I
have to wait a
few weeks for them to get it themselves - What's one more week added onto that.
Also.
there was talk that you could get it from David L. himself. But, I couldn't find
a link so I
went ahead and pre-ordered my copy. Come December I would like to order directly
from
Mr Leech. (I figure the cut is 50/50 with retail) He should get the most for his
work. I plan
on giving them as Christmas presents to the people I incesently bug already with
Puppet
speak. All except my Sister , who is wonderful, and is now starting a collection
herself and
making puppets with me. Did you know that she is casting Pad Hands out of lead,
and
early regular hands out of aluminium . Oh Yeah, does anyone need some hands?

I can't wait for the new site to go live either, it is a little bit like an
early Christmas for all
of us! )

I have requested that I do not want anybody taking sneak previews of
the new site until it goes live. I do not want anyone giving out the
address until it is complete, which should be within the next week.

Its like waiting for Christmas to come... My aunt told me that when she was a
little girl, she
snuck down and opened all the christmas gift to see what everyone had gotten.
She
rewrapped the gift ,but, got the tags all wrong. That year my Grandfather got a
tea cosy and
a ladies bonnet.... There was a lot of explaining to do.... I will exercise my
patience here and
avoid a similar mishap.By the way: Thank you for all you are doing for us, and I
can't wait to
get the book!
