episodes. Like this one which reviews episodes from Sooty & Co, Sooty
Heights and the fourth episode of Series 51 of Sooty.

SOOTY AND CO: A MAGICAL VOICE
(release on VCI's Camping Out and Other Stories in 1995)
Rating: 8 out of 10

First thing in the morning, Sooty and Sweep are bouncing on pogo
sticks. Soo tells them off and tells them Matthew has got a cold.
Matthew is so sick he needs to write down what he wants to say.
Slight laughter comes from Matthew explaining to Soo he's lost his
voice, so Soo takes pleasure in saying `NO SINGING' to Matthew.

Sooty gets confused when Soo said Matthew has lost his voice and goes
in search for it but Soo explains to him in a similar way `we have
another person in the house that hasn't got a voice'. Now Matthew's
only form of communication is by the help of a computer; Sooty
suggest whispering as he's done that for over 40 years and it hasn't
did him any harm.

While Matthew joins Sooty and Scampi in being `speechless', Sweep is
being jollying in the bath without a care in the world when Soo comes
into the bathroom to suggest to Sweep `To stuff this sock down your
mouth so it stops that horrible singing, we've got enough voice
problems in the house already'. I've only realised until now that
idol threats were use in Sooty & Co but done in good nature so no one
could ever complain about it.

Matthew still no better, Sooty works on a voice box and with Scampi
as a sidekick you'll expect things to go wrong. Soo makes Sweep cry
when she makes him think `his voice is horrible' and goes to get help
from the voice box Sooty and Scampi are making. Scampi helps find
talking things for the machine like talking clocks, computers and
dolls, actually doing something right but things could be going wrong
very soon knowing him, but it was Sooty who was about to screw things
up as his magic wand starts to trouble to come.

Sooty Voice Box is finished, Matthew breaths into the facemask and by
magic gets his voice back. Sweep is nice in line for a new voice, so
he breaths into the face mask and (here's where the trouble starts)
gets SOO'S VOICE. When we next see Soo, she is speaking with Sweep's
voice. Sweep comments about his old squeak `that voice has been
getting on my nerve for years' and it's taking him this long to
finally say it.

To top everything off Scampi is now speaking in an older man's voice.
Shock all around they finally notice the `voice sales man' played by
comedian John Bird. All this ends off with Sooty being able to speak
after over 40 years (the voice in question is Matthew's done in a old
fashion English voice). Here's what he said in full
SOOTY – "Here what's the meaning of this, I've spent the last 40
years with no voice at all and here comes Jack The Lad and suddenly
am talking in this London accent, I have a good mind to kick you in
the apple and pears my son. And ask for you Matthew my son, he's
making a monkey out of you my son, you better wait up, WAIT UP…………."
It was all a dream and when he wakes up, he gets his voice back. He
waves goodbye to us by his newly found voice and by the computer that
helped him through those speechless times.

With a meaning throughout the story being `be grateful for what you
have, as it makes you want you are'. And laughter coming from all the
speechless moments and references to Sooty's history it makes it a
classic and worth returning too.

SOOTY HEIGHTS: TOURIST THROUGH THE NIGHT*
(the 10th episode of the 47th Series of Sooty (First Season of Sooty
Heights)
Rating: 5 out of 10

Everyone expect Liana can't get to sleep on this stormy night at
Sooty Heights. When Liana is waked by all the screams from the
others, She goes and tells them everything's all right. Soo and
Richard starts of singing a sweet lovely song but ends off scaring
everyone else even more, so it's up Liana to helped them get to
sleep……… for now.

Scampi hears something down stairs and wakes up everyone else. It's
really Sweep wanting to gets midnight coco and making a huge noise,
but ends up being squirt by Sooty's water pistol, as they all think
he's a ghost. Sooty cleans everything up with the magic wand and
every tries to get back to sleep. It's only a few hours until the
German visitors are to arrive, And Sweep, like the train wreck builds
up on the trouble as he picks up the phone to hear the German
visitors will arrive early but are doggy friend falls asleep.

Dotty lets the German visitors in with her spare key, but Sweep
mistakes her as a burglar. Getting Sooty's help, he gets his water
pistol and ends up squirting Dotty in the confusion. And Richard
joins them as he pours flour over Dotty, thinking she's a ghost and
Sooty & Sweep also pour flour over her as well for the same reason.

Liana goes along with them and calls the police thinking there's
ghost/burglar. The policeman gets upset he's on a false alarm but
gets cheer up when he gets called to a `real' burglary. Promise to
remember Dotty's flour covered face he goes off to the other case.

Dotty finally explains she let in the German visitors, Sweep then
explain he took the call they were coming and admitted he fell
asleep. But it ends up that Richard, Liana and Sooty & Co were up all
night and it will be other 24 hours until they finally get to there
nice warm bed.

As Sooty Heights is filmed on the set used in Fawtly Towers you get
reminded off their madcap humour involving Germans mix with the crazy
mayhem of a normal day (well night in this case) of Sooty Heights and
I have to say that the two very different art forms don't collide too
well. The Laughter is are friends trying to get to sleep basically
but stretching it out to get a laugh from the noises down stairs was
a mistake. And Slapstick with Sooty & Sweep thinking Dotty's a
burglar and Richard thinking she was a ghost never had a good back-
bone; meaning Brenda Longman gets covered with flour but the audience
is left clueless. While it started off funny they had nothing to
following the high standard from the first scene.

There are better episodes of Sooty Heights from season one, so my
guess is the creators run out of good ideas before the series end.

*NOT ACTUAL TITLE OF EPISODE

SOOTY AT THE SEASIDE
(first aired 14/08/03)
Rating: 9 out of 10

Four episodes in and these classic looking puppets are starting to
grow on me, but I'll wait for the newer puppets to arrive back on our
screen… not that they let the quality of the episodes is down, its
one year there fat face and loveable and then they went to that Fit
Club and come back as their younger self's, so that must have been
what they got for their 50th year… now it all makes sense.

Anyway Hotel Sooty today is very hot (In Britain this would have to
be far fetch but last summer did change that), Soo said's `It's too
hot' so Sooty helps by putting her face in a bowl of ice… as you do.
Sweep who rarely thinks of good ideas suggest a seaside for the
guests, so Sooty, Soo and Miki also set out to make Sweep rare idea
come true.

The sub-plot of this episode is Richard wants to build a summerhouse
and gets Butch to help. He just wants to sit in the sun and sleep,
doing no work all day; finally a change of character in Butch who
back in this first Sooty & Co appearance as a pirate has now become
loveable, if only Soo didn't change so quickly when Brenda Longman
left her 20 year career of Sooty behind.

The words `What could possibly go wrong' is in the air I think, Sweep
runs out of puff while blowing up the pool and Butch takes 40 winks
under the shed avoiding the work Richard is forcing him to do. Sweep
tries to get water from the tap while Richard needs the water
outside, it ends up Sweep does get to fill the pool while Richard
wanting to know where the water went, looks up the pipe and at that
moment Sweep turns the water back on and Richard gets wet.

Now mayhem strikes as the classic routine of mistaking something for
another gets into play with Sooty taking the Cement thinking it to be
Sand. Miki gets Sweep to search for deck chair material for the deck
chairs; So Sweep cuts up Richard shirt as its similar to a deck
chair. The main woman guest at Hotel Sooty takes a dip in the water
and then the sand (cement). Then you only have to guess what comes
next.

And In this scene pops up Scampi, as here at Reaching Brand New Sooty
Heights are many reason for hating Series 49 was Scampi only appeared
twice, someone on the production team who was a member of this board
who went under the name fabernoony (I think) mention this and Scampi
appear in every episode of Series 50. Scampi maybe the silent fellow
but he's still loved and should have another starring role in a
episode like he had in "Scampi's picture" back in season one of Sooty
Heights.

Richard makes a wall with sand and needs help to knock a brick into
half. The classic `I'll Nod My Head and You Hit It' routine is
brought back and it's still funny as ever but adds the `Hit This' and
Butch bangs the hammer on Richard's finger. The mix-up with the Sand
and Cement get answered as the quest walks into the backyard with
cement boots. But fire gets started in the hotel so they had to put
that out urgently.

Another `join the dots' type song tells the story of building a
seaside in the backyard. So Sooty magic-away Mrs Jones cement boots
and everyone at Hotel Sooty is happy on their really hot sunny day.

Big Cheers to the Sooty Team, 3 9's in one series, you really have
learnt from your mistake but will the next 7 possible episodes be
perfect?? Lets roll on next week.
