SUPER HEROES
(4th Episode of Series 50, Sooty's Golden Jubilee year)
Rating: 5 out of 10
Carrying On the `Nothing Bad but Nothing Great either' theme for this
series we have the episode SUPERHEROES. The one huge letdown is this
episode doesn't feature Superdog, the famous Superman spoof from The
Sooty Show. But in its place we have Super Sooty and Spider Sweep.
Richard needs help in carrying a guest bags to their room but Super
Sooty and Spider Sweep come dashing in thinking the guest is a baddy
as they are superheroes. But Richard explains the simple task they
should have done. Overall this scene is just plain stupid.
The sub-plot which is better than the main one involves Soo wanting
to get a picture of baby chicks from the nest on the very tall tree
in their back garden. Miki brings up that Soo doesn't like heights,
but Soo doesn't listen.
The following scene where the superheroes fill up with milkshake is
almost a reference to the Sooty Elite Episode `Burglar Box' from The
Sooty Show. That scene with some great puppet work for their time
gave that episode full marks but so far `Superheroes' doesn't
impress. Miki also wants to be a superhero so she decides to be
Wondercat. All Three cleans the dining room with messy results (want
have you come to expect).
They end up having a Superhero bun fight but in the middle of this,
Soo gets in actual trouble when she's stuck in the tree after the
ladder falls from under her. Miki thinks fast and calls the fire
bridge.
The song `Super-bear' has a little difference from the theme to Super
Ted. But the effort of Sooty and Sweep they manage to rescue Soo from
the tree all without Superpowers.
Superheroes wanted to be more than it was ever possible to become.
The one thing am glad is Scampi got to become apart of the storyline
at the very end by trying on Sweep's Superhero costume. But that was
all I like about `Superheroes' it fail to live up to what it promise
and while not awful in any way, I never what to sit through this
episode again.

SOOTY IN CHARGE
(episode five of Series 50, Sooty's Golden Jubilee year)
Rating: 6 out of 10
So far in this series it's remain all right as far as the quality of
the episodes. Yes we can all agree the retro puppets looked odd but
it's remained good and is improvement of Series 49. While I said
that, it's only slightly improve with the average of sixes and sevens
with the odd five and eight toss in for good measure.
Richard and Soo have been struck with the flu with Sooty and Sweep
playing nurses (I know dressing up as woman AGAIN) in their usual
chaos way with Richard strangely getting lemon juice squirted into
his eyes instead of the normal water. This leaves Miki and Scampi all
alone running the hotel; they maybe short staff but I'm glad where
seeing Scampi popping up in an episode now and again.
Back to our sick twosome, and we see Richard is sicker than we fought
and has decided on the decision to let Sooty run Hotel Sooty. Soo who
is aiming to be sicker than Richard thinks this is a crazy idea but
Richard's mind has been made up.
So to sum-up, With their management skills they try to make the guest
have the best fun in the world and forcing the guests to like the
things that Sooty and Sweep like. They put a Swimming Pool in the
dining room, they rip a young mans clothes while he was still wearing
them, make a lunch full of the things that the duo like. They mistake
Richard words when they said `leave us in peace' thinking he said
peas so Richard gets covered in Green peas.
The song `Hotel Sooty Special' is again another one of those join the
dots type songs and fits in with the whole story. It plays up to the
whole what would be your dream dish for dinner with all those sugary
foods all in one go is sort-of a dream for little kids. Again just
appealing to the demographic that Sooty does aim for regularly and as
of yet doesn't notice the older generations who would watch the show
all the time and has or getting used to the idea of Richard Cadell
being Sooty's new right hand man.
The young guests that Sooty and Sweep are trying to make them like
their favourite things our seriously unhappy so our duo ask `what is
your favourite thing to do' and they recommend an magic show as the
reason they were saying at the hotel was to see a famous magician.
With Sooty being a great magician they putted on a show and the guest
are really happy and forgive Sooty and Sweep for what they had done.
No serious problems with `Sooty In Charge' just a good pat on the
back to the writer and the people who played this episode's guest.
It's pretty clear this episode aims at only one part of Sooty's
audience, which is a regular 850,000 viewers (at the time) and that
was the little kids. There's nothing wrong with that it just makes
the loyal following feel left out.
As in Series 50 in does improve on 49, it doesn't use routines much
in the script but turning a puppet show into a children's sitcom was
never going to be easy and at the half way point of the series, they
haven't yet realise how great the winning Corbett formula is and in
my view they are taking a really long time in getting there.

SOOTY'S MAGIC GARDEN
(episode six of Series 50, Sooty's Golden Jubilee year)
Rating: 8 out of 10
Could the writing talent of Simon Rushton give the Golden Jubilee of
Sooty the boost it needs after the average of sixes and sevens the
previously five episodes has got. In my words yes, far from being
counted as the best episode of Richard's realm of being Sooty's right
hand man, but it's a nice step on the journey of finding the perfect
episode.
Miki is in depth with her favourite comic `Wonder Duck' but doesn't
like when they leave the really excited bit to the next issue. Vicki
comes in from the Garden Centre with stuff of Richard that he needs
for the hotel garden. Soo's thinks Richard is bonkers for talking to
the flowers to help them to grow and the rest of the gang agrees.
Sooty and Sweep likes Richard hobby and would like to take up growing
Sunflowers. They don't like the idea that you have to wait for the
sunflowers to grow so Richard tells Sweep it's useless saying `Grow
You Stupid Plant'. We have a nice and warmly welcome routine of
putting a fake branch in the flowerpot with the whole idea being `my
sunflower has grow faster than yours'. Slowly but surely the Corbett
formula is coming back but its going to take time and we have no
choice but to wait on them getting the `if its not broke, don't fix
it' motto back into Sooty.
Vicki has more stuff from the garden centre and Miki's Wonder Duck
comic was put in that stuff and its ruined. Richard tells them this
stuff will help your flowers to grow but Sooty has another way in
helping their sunflower seeds to grow. Sooty's Magic Wand is put into
play and by waving his wand their flowers do grow but as usual more
chaos is just around the corner. The following song `Izzy Whizzy'
follows the story of turning all the flowers in the hotel with magic.
But its also to note from `Sooty's Magic Garden' is a pretty major
character change for one of our longest running characters which is
all but a bit too hard to shallow. The character in question is Soo,
change from the days when she was Sooty's girlfriend and now turn
into a spoilt little brat. While they are improving the whole show,
this is wrong and Soo has become the most unpopular character. Going
onto children's message board and chat rooms and when I bring up the
subject of Sooty, the usual "It's not the same since Matthew left" we
get "I Don't like Soo". She once was a little girl favourite choice
of the range of characters but serious action needs to be taken to
fix Soo. Change the voice, PLEASE CHANGE THE VOICE and use something
created by Vicki Lee Taylor. Whatever she can come up with is far
better than the voice they currently have.
Richard discovers Sooty has used his magic wand to make a Gardeners
Nightmare (lots of weeds if you don't know that meaning) and orders
Sooty to fix this problem. But he tells him his wand is lost within
these weeds and they have to find it. Once they got the wand, he
magic everything away and that includes our duo's magical sunflowers.
But in time those sunflowers that Sooty and Sweep were fanatic about
start to grow with Sweeps being the bigger of the two. Miki did
receive her next issue of Wonder Duck but as always hates when they
leave the exciting bit to the next issue.
Sooty's Magic Garden is what I've said a nice step along the journey
in finding the perfect episode of Richard's Realm. While this episode
doesn't come close it starts to bring back the old fashion and really
popular Corbett formula but also sees an unwelcome change of
character, which needs change quickly. But overall starts of
hopefully better things for Sooty and his chums at Hotel Sooty.

THE NEW GANG
(episode seven of Series 50, Sooty's Golden Jubilee year)
Rating: 8 out of 10
I review Series 51 before starting on Series 50 and back then I
gave `Water, Water Everywhere' full marks and name it the best
episode of Richard's realm of Sooty. That writer is Nathan Cockerill
and he is the writer of this script. While not perfect than his work
that was about to come out from him you have to note he is fairly new
to the writing team at this stage and even the best people don't
start perfectly. It took time for Richard to be the new man and I can
only imagine it was hard being a new writer their to.
Miki is currently out of character and plays with horses but gets
annoyed by a group of people outside. It's a gang called "Bashes
Bulldogs" which has a member we all know… Butch. The Concept of one-
off characters is brought back for Nathan's ok episode; Bass and Bosh
are the names of these one-off characters. The previous characters
which where only meant for one episode is Parrot and believe it or
not… Scampi. Originally Scampi was only meant to appear in one
episode in 1991 (He's currently 12 years old now even know he will
always be five) but this little fellow got so much fan-mail that he
was brought back and joined the gang in 1992, and he hasn't looked
back since and we all warmly welcome him.
Soo, Scampi, Sweep and Sooty make a puppet show for the guest and
bossy Soo is in charge. Sweep knocks Soo into some paint and Sooty
felt left out so he knocks Soo into the paint also. Sooty and Sweep
wants to join the Bashes Bulldogs gang that Butch is currently apart
of. Sweep gets membership straight away but our childhood friend
Sooty gets turn away because he is a bear. Sooty feels really left
out but with his magic wand creates away he can join the club.
What Sooty planned was dressing himself up as a dog. He calls himself
Bonzo and joins when they're planning something really ugly. While
Miki and Soo fight over what should be in their puppet show, we find
out that the gang will throw water bombs at the event. Butch finds
out Bonzo is really Sooty and starts to have second thoughts about
the gang and the ideas that want to do.
Going back to the Corbett Formula, His ideas of studying children's
behaviour and how they react are fully realise in these scenes
featuring Miki and Soo. Nathan looks to be a great writer and thank
you for being apart of the Sooty team as the whole show is getting
really good because of you.
At the event, Scampi DJ's the music and uses all the wrong noises and
all the wrong times. Again welcome back Scampi being naughty, he
isn't the same if he's not being cheeky. Bash and Bosh does throw
water-bombs at the production but Butch, Sooty and Sweep chicken out
and stands up for their friends. It all ends off with a Messy Brawl
routine, last seen in THAT episode (All New Sooty) it somehow fits
perfectly with the writing off this episode. And soon after Bash and
Bosh leaves the Hotel never to visit again.
From a great writer comes a not perfect but good episode for Series
50. Old concepts get brought back into plays and its success is where
earlier episodes fail and that welcoming all the generations that
makes up the Sooty's fan base. I will always put high praise for this
writer and look forward to what else he can come up with.
