MOVING IN
(Series One 1st episode of Sooty Heights)
Rating: 7 out of 10

Sooty enters a new era with his new master Richard Cadell. Along with
his friends Sweep, Soo and Scampi plus new female newcomer Liana they
all move from their old junk shop home to a hotel where its famous
previous owners were Basel Fawlty and their name of the Hotel `Fawlty
Towers'.

Everyone starts moving into the hotel, Richard is in search for the
telephone but gets squirted with water, Sweep finds a bone when he
asked for the phone and all of our friends gets into a panic when
their new neighbour Dotty delivers their mail and they find out Hotel
Inspectors are coming in one the day they are moving in.

The main plot of this episode is Scampi is exploring the hotel in
search for a hiding place to put his much-loved mice into a safe
place. This gets all the other people worry as if Scampi puts his
mice in the wrong place and the inspectors find them, they will be
closed down before they have even open.

Sooty and Sweep rushed around trying to avoid Richard, Scampi comes
out of the closet and the squeaking noise continues around the hotel.
Richard mistakes knocking noises that Soo's making for the mice while
trying to find the mice but Richard ask another idea in hunting for
the mice. They make a squeak detacher and try to avoid any non-squeak
noises and with the dumbness of Sweep in full play ruins this mice
finding idea that Richard fought would work.

Sooty makes a small hole, which turns into a huge hole, Sweep and
Richard dress up as mice and eats cheese, Scampi swaps that cheese
for soap and finally they realise who would know where the mice are
being kept. With the diversion of the old `When I Nod my Head…'
routine into play they find Scampi and the mice. Dotty visits the
hotel and discover they pass the check-up.

Peter Corey is one of the first writers of Sooty apart from the
Corbett family who normally write the episodes until the last series
of Sooty & Co when Matthew retired. They even say it themselves when
opening the hotel they have a few problems and they show in the
scripts. Those problems that I'm talking about is getting to use with
Sooty being written by someone not from the Corbett family; I
remember episodes from Sooty not written by them and they turn out
really poor.

But Peter had a though job following a great man and so does Richard
as this is his first show as Sooty's right hand man and an audience
of a million and a half wanted to see if he can put it off. Overall
it had a `This is the first episode' feel to it and little moments
like Sweep and his bone, Sooty and his water pistol and in this
episode Scampi and his mice introduce their characters and what
they're about, something that SOOTY the 2001 series fail on doing.

But I feel Liana's performance felt like an act instead of coming
natural, which Richard clearly does so well at. Understand perfectly
why she got the chop but they should have written her out of the
series, one of the biggest plot holes of the whole show is `where
Liana went to?' Moving In has problems but delivers what it promise.

THE HOTTEST PLACE IN TOWN
(Series One 2nd episode of Sooty Heights)
Rating: 8 out of 10

Are things going ok for Sooty and the gang, well in this episode they
make Sooty Heights `The Hottest Place In Town'. Richard is worry
about the opening of the hotel and that everything goes to plan. He
asks for a pen and gets squirted by ink from Sooty. Sweep gets trap
inside the banner and is `wrap up in his work'. Then when Sooty helps
Sweep in putting in up the banner we see a reference to laurel and
Hardy with the whole ladder business. Funny and glad to see they're
giving nods to the old comedians.

They when everyone is busy getting ready for the grand opening,
Richard is waiting for the manager of a coach tour to arrive. And
when he does arrive, he gets insulted by Richard and doesn't let his
coach party coming to the hotel but tries to find a way to get his
guest to this hotel. More trouble arrives when the new uniforms are
fire-fighter outfits and at the last minute arrange for children to
come to the opening party.

A nice diversion with the printing press and finding the letters,
which is good as Sweep's dumbness is here in full strength. They turn
all the bad things that have happen into good and have a theme
opening party. The song and the first main song since Richard's realm
of being Sooty's right hand man started in "Hottest Place In Town"
It's good in its own way but not really good enough to keep your
attention for a whole minute and a half.

The manger of the coach party returns and mistakes the theme party
for being a real fire and calls the fire brigade hoping that the
hotel is on fire that they will sell the hotel for cheap. He admits
he was wrong to call them out and gets soak by the fire brigade and
the rightful owner of Sooty Heights… Sooty, who wouldn't sell his the
hotel to anyone.

Also to note Peter Corey plays Mr Cobitt who also wrote this episode
and the previous opening series episode `Moving In' and possibly
other episodes in this series. Very good to see the first writer of
sooty who isn't from the Corbett family? Unknown if he's still
working for our favourite little teddy bear but I like to say he's
wrote these first two episodes perfectly.

Without question one of the most remember episodes from both series
of Sooty Heights but think long and hard what makes this episode
stand out. While it gets a mark that episodes of this quality usually
gets from me in my view the better episodes are the ones not too many
people would remember at first.

TOURIST THROUGH THE NIGHT*
(the 10th episode of the 47th Series of Sooty (First Season of Sooty
Heights)
Rating: 5 out of 10

Everyone expect Liana can't get to sleep on this stormy night at
Sooty Heights. When Liana is waked by all the screams from the
others, She goes and tells them everything's all right. Soo and
Richard starts of singing a sweet lovely song but ends off scaring
everyone else even more, so it's up Liana to helped them get to
sleep……… for now.

Scampi hears something down stairs and wakes up everyone else. It's
really Sweep wanting to gets midnight coco and making a huge noise,
but ends up being squirt by Sooty's water pistol, as they all think
he's a ghost. Sooty cleans everything up with the magic wand and
every tries to get back to sleep. It's only a few hours until the
German visitors are to arrive, And Sweep, like the train wreck builds
up on the trouble as he picks up the phone to hear the German
visitors will arrive early but are doggy friend falls asleep.

Dotty lets the German visitors in with her spare key, but Sweep
mistakes her as a burglar. Getting Sooty's help, he gets his water
pistol and ends up squirting Dotty in the confusion. And Richard
joins them as he pours flour over Dotty, thinking she's a ghost and
Sooty & Sweep also pour flour over her as well for the same reason.

Liana goes along with them and calls the police thinking there's
ghost/burglar. The policeman gets upset he's on a false alarm but
gets cheer up when he gets called to a `real' burglary. Promise to
remember Dotty's flour covered face he goes off to the other case.

Dotty finally explains she let in the German visitors, Sweep then
explain he took the call they were coming and admitted he fell
asleep. But it ends up that Richard, Liana and Sooty & Co were up all
night and it will be other 24 hours until they finally get to there
nice warm bed.

As Sooty Heights is filmed on the set used in Fawtly Towers you get
reminded off their madcap humour involving Germans mix with the crazy
mayhem of a normal day (well night in this case) of Sooty Heights and
I have to say that the two very different art forms don't collide too
well. The Laughter is are friends trying to get to sleep basically
but stretching it out to get a laugh from the noises down stairs was
a mistake. And Slapstick with Sooty & Sweep thinking Dotty's a
burglar and Richard thinking she was a ghost never had a good back-
bone; meaning Brenda Longman gets covered with flour but the audience
is left clueless. While it started off funny they had nothing to
following the high standard from the first scene.

There are better episodes of Sooty Heights from season one, so my
guess is the creators run out of good ideas before the series end.
