THE 1987 SOOTY CHRISTMAS SHOW
(first aired in 1987, On VHS `The Sooty Christmas Show')
Rating: 8 out of 10

While for this generation it looks like the current Series 51 is
shaping up to be the best season of our era and many would agree. But
what about the previous era of Sooty fans and what was their best
ever season? From going to backlogs I find its Series 35 back in the
year 1987. It had the best guest star ever (Hidden Talent); episodes
you remembered but now wonder why (School Trip, Sooty's Magic Lamp),
a return of a popular spoof of Superman (Return of Superdog) and the
best episode ever period (Burglar Box). But it's this episode we are
looking into as normally episodes of this type don't rate highly but
still class as good cause its Matthew. It's a certain Best New Young
Magician of 1986/1987 we are looking at this for and this person will
feel right at home giving `a hand' to our friends in the future.

Now on with the show, Matthew can't sleep as it's the very early
morning of Christmas Day and doesn't want to wake until later to open
presents and do Christmassy things on this day. He finds out his
present is our three friends Sooty, Sweep and Soo and he is happy
about his gift because he loves them very much. They open their
presents with Soo getting a dress, Sweep and a new bone and Sooty
with a new magic wand (it looks like his old one and rightfully so).

Our friends give Matthew his actual present, a set of hand bells.
With Sweep and Soo leaving Matthew and Sooty alone to play some music
on his new gift. They play a very Christmas sounded song called `Home
is where the heart is'. For this Matthew needed to practise, as
others would be looking at where they're going and wouldn't look at
the camera and on top of that sing the song aswell. We do like effort
and planning in watching Sooty and to the unknowing eye they could
just see Matthew playing this song with Sooty on the right end of it
but hopefully they will forgive that so-called flaw which it's not.

Later on Soo jokes about whoever is at the door by saying `Maybe
that's Father Christmas asking directions for the way home' and when
the visitor comes in and it's that young magician we were talking
about. With the expected burst out of laugher and thoughts of `what
does he look like' to be kind he was young and the next ten years
helped him be strong enough to be Matthew's replacement. We of course
are talking about Richard Cadell. He did tricks like `Make goldfish
appear from a tenner' and `mini robot that picks the card you've
chosen'. I understand why he was awarded a New Young Magician title
and an appearance on Sooty and am glad he was the replacement and
thanks for the laughs of looking at his Afro haircut.

Thinking of all the children who won't be at home for Christmas and
with Sooty upset at the thought, ask to pay them a visit. Matthew
agrees to the visit. Sooty squirts everyone with the water pistol and
visits all the children and hands out puppets to all of them.
Visiting Hospitals is part of Sooty and watching his adventures would
cheer them up back to full health. They return home and find they
haven't got the Christmas party ready and tickets for the show has
sold out but with Sooty's Christmas present all is saved.

They are magically seated at the best seats for the show. In 2004
with the death of mainstream 2D animation, looking back before the
death of variety shows and miss this genre. This Act seems popular
and got a nod as being great from the awesome `The Office'. So the
gang and the audience of children take part in a routine and everyone
is enjoyed it. But still at the end of it they're still tears from
Soo, as they haven't got a Christmas Party; so with the magic wand
they make a big and great party for the children who watch the
performance.

This episode should be noted with others in a special group of
shows `crossovers with the right hand men'. Matthew crosses over with
Harry in the early seventies, Richard crosses over with Matthew as we
now know in 1987, Harry cross over with Matthew on Series 31 and
Matthew cross over with Richard in 1998 as the last series of Sooty &
Co was basically Richard's show. Without knowing who Cadell was this
episode would of struggle from the `bad episodes' list but is saved
for being good and a point in Sooty's history which should be looked
back on.

THE UNREAL GHOSTBUSTERS
(Aired in 1988, Sooty's 36th Season. On VHS `Sooty Wants A Pet')
rating: 8 out of 10

With what you find about The Sooty Show is you have episodes you
loved and remember fondly. Those episodes you were scare or impress
about when you were four but now in your teens you wonder why. `The
Unreal Ghostbusters' falls to the latter as you need to be in the age
range Sooty aims for to get the full understanding of this episode.
But lets remember how you felt watching this and judge it from that.

We look into Matthew's room and we see he isn't there but a ghostly
image is. After being slightly scared we found out its Matthew
playing a trick on us but didn't mean to scare us too much. In the
gang's bedroom, Soo is reading Sooty a ghost story and he is very
scared. Sweep being naughty made spooky noises at the really scary
bits of the story but all he what's to do is go walkies.

At the breakfast table, Sooty wonders what they would do if they meet
a ghost. Sweep would tell a bad joke and run away, Soo would vacuum
it up like in the film Ghostbusters and Sooty would use his water
pistol as it gets rid of Sweep quickly enough. Matthew who isn't
scared about anything takes on a bet to spend a night at a spooky
hotel and if he loses and doesn't spend the night at the hotel, he
has to buy our friends a fish and chips supper.

Lots of Kudos must be given to the set designer of the hotel bedroom
scene and effects recent episodes of Sooty would of fought for. With
a picture, which follows you around the room, candles that turn on
and off, clothes that put themselves on the handles and bookworms
that squirt water. But the best effect of all is making a ghostly
image of Matthew as the ghost who haunts the room. Excellent stuff
which proves how to use a budget of not much money and turn it into
something great. He's glad it was they playing a trick as it proves
that ghost aren't real and you shouldn't be scared.

For this episode from the 36th season has childhood memories for
people who remember it and while we look back on it and wonder why we
were scare, children of today looking back on this would be feeling
the same way we need when we were a child. The Unreal Ghostbusters
holds a place in your memories and is watchable whenever you next
watch it.

SHERLOCK SOOTY
(Aired in 1981, 29th Season. On VHS `The Adventures of Sooty')
rating: 3 out of 10

It had to of happen sometime, a rubbish Matthew hosted show and while
fans will state everything he did was good they need to re-watch this
horrible viewing again. Could the gang at Sooty's house have a
burglar robbing their food? They wouldn't really be one but for a
time they fought so in this far from good episode from the early
eighties. It's morning at the Sooty House and for the first time
ever; Sweep isn't hungry and doesn't want his breakfast but for
everyone else that's the lease of his or her troubles.

They go down to the breakfast bar and find all of the food has been
stolen and all that's left is beans. Even at this worse time Sweep
doesn't want his food and the others attack his plate to get the few
beans that he was given. While worried about Sweep not eating the
rumbles in there stomachs are what they focus on. But as we do looked
at pass episodes and see ideas, routines that are place in current
episodes; the one-off concepts we should note when we see them.

For this part of the script, Soo's House gets written in. As this is
the first time I've seen this and maybe it was use before but it is
odd and a smaller version of the kitchen in Sooty's house is mainly
the set. Why was this use and build for this episode? All of the food
from Soo house is robbed with only beans remaining and decided to
call in some help to track down the criminal.

So in comes Sherlock Sooty, and what is basically an average routine
is one of the one high points of this bad show. When he finds crumbs
he states `Were looking for a crummy burglar'. All of the clues he
finds links to Matthew and he finds out his mistake. Later on he
returns to take fingerprints and again thinks Matthew is the burglar
that they're looking for but understands he's wrong again.

And in that scene we have `A EDITED MISTAKE' as when we have a close
up shot of Sherlock Sooty we see Matthew's blue jumper up Sooty's
backside. It had to happen, a poor Matthew hosted episode and that
scene like the iceberg was to the Titanic and sinks any chances of
this being good. In the next day, all of the food has been robbed and
Sweep thinks the window cleaner is the burglar (WHY??) But it takes
another night for Matthew, Sooty and Soo to realise that its was
Sweep sleepwalking and sleep eating all their food so they lure him
back to bed with his favourite bone.

I hate to knock any of Matthews's fine writing and all his episodes
have been great to watch. As people know episodes from recent series
usually get a below five rating and now one of Matthew's scripts
joins that list. Why Soo had her house? Why wasn't the Sherlock Sooty
bit had a stronger written routine? And why was there a scene where
Sweep was thought about his actions and helps him get over it? For
the fanatic Sooty fan or a secret Sooty fan; It's a sad day to
witness a bad episode of Matthew's Sooty Show and hope we don't find
any other stinkers as you enjoy looking back at the Corbett legacy.
