Robo Richard/The Mysterious Visitor

Two episodes of the classic children's puppet comedy. Sooty and
Sweep decide to make a robot - which accidentally knocks Richard
out. Richard sets out to impress his posh visitor, Lady Charlotte.
Sooty, Sweep and Micki quickly discover that she is a burglar and is
trying to rob the hotel.

Here is the reviews of these episodes original posted after the
episodes first airing.

ROBO RICHARD
(first episode of Series 50, Sooty's Golden Jubilee year)
Rating: 6 out of 10

50 Wonderful years of Sooty and Series 50 of the television is about
to begin back in September/October 2002 and the Warm-up to the first
episode gives you a sneak peek at whats going to happen. We see
Richard and Vicki on with the CITV hosts and we get to preview what
Sooty and Sweep look like. `Haven't they lost weight'? `Did they go
on that Celebrity Fit Club'? No, the best thing about Series 50 is
they use similar puppets to the ones that Harry Corbett first use 50
years ago. While we won't have a clip show its great they understand
Sooty has a history and they made something special for the 50th
year. At first they look odd but to know they didn't pass by a
milestone by doing this is great. But the main question is `HAVE
THEY LEARNT THEIR LESSONS FROM THE AWFUL SERIES 49 BY NOT MESSING
WITH THE WINNING FORMAT'?

Lets see Sooty and Sweep are building a robot to replace Richard so
he can spend more time playing with them. But Richard tells them a
visitor is coming and we don't need the trouble in the hotel. They
change Miki's voice from the Woody Woodpecker type-high pitch voice
to a mellow cool cat type voice, which will hopefully grow during
the course of the series.

The next scene brings on the biggest change of all, the replacement
voice of Soo, which has been voiced by Brenda Longman for the
previous 20 years. So the third voice of Soo (the second being
Brenda and the first being Matthew Corbett's Mum) is A SCOTTISH
ACCENT.
I didn't see that one coming, while replacing Brenda was always
going to be hard you have to think the voice actor (who is called
Sarah Wright, correct me if am wrong) will develop Soo's voice over
the Series and she has. This scene, which is the sub-plot for the
story, sees Soo wanting Richard to buy her Pony Videos with the
twenty pound Richard needs to make a new sign for Hotel Sooty.

Soo liking Ponies dates back to the early 90's and they brought back
a 12 year old story line for Series 50 but they did give up
the `Sooty's Girlfriend' line in favour for this girlish liking
ponies one. So Soo takes the money to buy the videos and makes the
Hotel Sign herself.

Sooty and Sweep still trying to make the robot helpful, Richard
still hates the robot being about so the robot knocks out Richard.
While the friends can't wait Richard, Sooty makes the Robot look
like Richard and that's when the chaos begins. A writer from the
Hotel Times is the important guest Richard was taking about and this
poor man is the subject of custard pies and lots of other yucky
things.

Miki brakes the remote and makes the robot go into chaos, Soo
confess about spending the money on Pony videos and Sooty uses a
electronic zapper to stop Robot Richard and blows him up with
dynamite… as you do. The writer ends up liking the messy fun day and
promise to write a good review about the hotel.

While they did fix their problems from Series 49 and the mixture of
the old style puppets is a plus its no more than an ok opening for
this series. Also highly likely based on a early 90's The Sooty Show
episode called `Matt Robot' its not original but makes it watchable
but still adds to the number of re-used script ideas from The Sooty
Show and that number is far too high for my liking

THE MYSTERIOUS VISITOR
(episode two of Series 50, Sooty's Golden Jubilee year)
Rating: 7 out of 10

Re-used idea no.2 coming up and this goes back as recent as Sooty
Heights all I say to the writers is come up with new ideas please.

Soo tells us an important posh visitor is coming to visit but is she
all that she seems. Sooty, Sweep and Miki are really excited and try
to agree to behave but Soo is the one that wants Richard and the
posh lady to fall in love, get married and be a bridesmaid. Because
that what happens in her girlish books that she reads and wants
Richard to be happy.

Richard has dinner with the posh lady and Sooty, Sweep and Scampi
acts really helpful until they pour sauce over Richard. Gotta love
this scene as for them it's out of character and you're waiting with
joy for the messy climax you come to expect.

But are guest goes off and searches for the hotel safe and checks to
see if its easy to open but Sooty and Sweep make sure she doesn't
get too far in her plans. Sooty tries to tell Richard that she was
trying to steal from the safe but Richard doesn't believe them. Miki
wants Soo to wake up from the idea of Richard marring Lady Charlotte
and help make the dinner.

But Miki takes her attentions to Sooty and Sweep's plans to catch
Lady Charlotte in the act of stealing from the hotel. This scene
that features a James Bond spoof works well with the background
magically changing and the duo can't see through the sunglasses is a
laugh out loud moment. I love Miki's line that ends this
scene `Sometimes those boys are too cool for their own good' and I
have to agree.

When nighttime hits Hotel Sooty, our friends get ready for Miss
Charlotte through song (which holds its own and follows a theme in
recent songs as I `join the dots' type song, like telling a story in
itself). Miki calls the police and Sooty sets the traps of rotten
eggs, custard pies, water pistol and paint bombs but all their
effort comes down to being tied up by the burglar.

Miki frees Sooty and Sweep from being tied up, the police takes Lady
Charlotte for a very long time and Soo sadly doesn't become a
bridesmaid and they all learn a lesson that appearances can't always
be right.

This improves on the first episode of the season and still taking
old ideas from Sooty's past and make them seem new for the younger
children who hasn't seen those episodes is still going on. The idea
in question dates to as far back as Sooty Heights in where Brenda
Longman last character for Sooty was a posh lady who comes to Sooty
Heights to steal from the hotel. The same idea comes into play but
overall its watchable and whenever repeated earns a second viewing.
