LEADERSHIP, MEDIA AND DEMOCRACY: PRESSURES AND CHALLENGES
A free, open and independent media is a basic tenet of democracy. This ideal however is thwarted by direct and indirect political, economic and social pressures. Thus seminar will explore the multitude of pressures faced by today’s media and participants will examine how journalists themselves might begin to counter such threats to media freedom. What is the role of leadership at the level of government, the press and the larger society in upholding press freedom and the highest standards of journalism?
This 4 day participative and interactive course on leadership, media and democracy will be held from 11-14 March 2007 in the building of UNU-ILI in Amman, Jordan. Some 40 young journalists will be invited from across the world with
representation from the developing world and from conflict and post-conflict societies – Iraq, Palestine, Jordan and the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Latin America.
It is hoped that following the course, some participants will be provided with opportunities of working in the broad area of journalism – whether this be in the press, media councils, government departments, universities or in the NGO sector. During this two to four week period, participants will reflect on the important lessons of the course in the context of their particular working environments and at the end of this period they will be obliged to write a 7-10 page essay on their own future career trajectory and that of journalism as a cornerstone of democracy.
Interested participants are required to apply by e-mail or fax with the aid of the attached form.
The course fee is US$ 500.00 and includes registration, course materials, teas and lunches. A limited number of scholarships are available.
