Hi everyone
I'm sure there are a lot of us that have Brita Water Jugs but did you
know that used filters can be sent back to Brita, minimum 6 at a time,
for free? The address is Brita Recycling, Freepost TK1917, Sunbury on
Thames TW16 5BR.
Just another way of reducing waste.
Sue
Hi all,
Sorry if my original post didn`t make my position clear! I am
totally in favour of the new recycling bins. I fully agree with Sue
and Jo on this. Regarding food waste, there really is no need for
most of it to go in our general waste anyway, try a compost bin in
your garden! Worcestershire County Council are still offering them
at bargain prices here
http://www.wastemissionimpossible.org.uk/offers/offers_compost_bins.h
tml
But i have heard that some residents are being urged to sign a
petition against the bins, and i believe they have a very large
number of signatures already! If Mrs Williams was correct in saying
that our 240 litre grey bins are to be replaced with 180 litre bins,
there is likely to be even more opposition!!
Although Freecycle is perhaps more commonly associated with large,
bulky items, I do think that `Freecycling` can help reduce the
amount going into our general waste bin too. Take clothes for
instance - lots of people have been offering/requesting clothes
recently. When you consider that many people don`t have a car/the
time to take old clothes to recycling banks/charity shops, i bet a
large amount of these clothes would otherwise have gone in the
wheelie bin!! I think the same can be said of many more, small
household items.

Hello,
I'm with you, Sue; we had this system in Yorkshire where we used to live and
it worked fine. Anything the council does to help us to recycle more is a
brilliant thing and we should be grateful for it.

We've had our new green bin delivered and think the idea is great.
It enables us to do some kerbside recycling of plastic whereas
before we had to go to the banks - still have to for some items. We
have never had problems with maggots or disease in our general
rubbish bin and would suggest that if you are putting out food waste
you wrap it in newspaper and then in a plastic bag - maggots can
only survive with air. I know it will take time for people to get
used to the idea of two separate bins but why are we members of
freecycle if not to help keep things out of landfill and help the
planet? Stick with the two bins and I'm sure it will get easier.
Sue
I had a letter 2 weeks ago saying that
because I have 2 black wheelie bins I would have to give one of them up and if I
put 2 out one would be taken away. The only way I can have a larger black
wheelie bin is if I have a family of 6 or a family of 5 or more with 2 children
in nappies or a household with a family member with a medical need resulting in
extra amounts of household waste. The council in Jan/Feb time will provide a
green 240 litre wheelie bin and can provide a larger 360 litre bin on request.Â
The black wheelie bin will only be emptied once a fortnight and the green
wheelie bin emptied once a fortnight alternate weeks. The green bin will be
used for recyclable waste which includes paper, light card, cans, glass and
plastic bottles and everything else goes into your black bin.
I was disgusted with this and rang the
council asking what would happen if I put a chicken caucus or fish into my
black wheelie bin the day after collection in the middle of summer and I was
told that they didn’t know and it wasn’t very good was it and they sympathised
but didn’t offer a solution..!!Â
I have since walked up Lodge Road and
surrounding areas into town and noticed that this system is already in place
and every single black bin was overflowing and waste was on the floor and
people had obviously put the black bin out for emptying and a note was on it
saying it was only green bins that week and to wait until next week. I really
think disease will be rife in the summer judging by the state of that road when
I walked along it. After talking to a friend who lives up in Ormskirk she has
this system in place and a lot of complaints were in the paper but nothing was
done and I believe the same system is in Bromsgrove again with nothing being
done you just have to put up with it apparently. Obviously another cost cutting
exercise I am beginning to wonder what we pay our rates for..!!

knowing redditch council they wont say anything till its to late to do anything

In the
Redditch Standard newspaper the week before last there was a letter titled
`Recycling figures are misleading` from a Mrs Williams.
The
letter claimed that all Redditch
residents are to have our 240 litre grey bins replaced with a 180 litre
bin. According to the letter, this is going to be the standard general
waste bin for all households with less than 6 people, and that this bin
will be emptied once a fortnight.
Does
anyone have any more information about this?? I don`t think the council have
released any info on this yet and i can imagine there will be quite
alot of opposition if/when they do!!

Eco Film Showing will launch Redditch Alliance of Greens
Everyone concerned about environmental, ethical and social justice issues is invited to the screening of 3 short films. The event will take place at Redditch Town Hall on Thursday 23 November from 7.30pm. FREE ENTRY.
FILM 1 -`Who Owes Who?` - produced by Friends of the Earth Scotland. This film shows how poor countries are forced to pay back their debt, whilst at the same time, multinational corporations are devastating their environment.
FILM 2 - `Coffee- Take it Fairly` - produced by the Nicaraguan Solidarity Campaign. Fairtrade coffee producers in Nicaragua describe the difference that fairtrade has made to their lives.
FILM 3 - `Decentralised Energy - What Are We Waiting For?` - produced by Greenpeace. It shows how our current power stations are hugely wasteful of energy and that nuclear power is not the answer to our increasing energy demands. It demonstrates how a system of localised electricity generation is the solution and would contribute far less to climate change.
Members of the Redditch Trade Justice Network and Redditch Friends of the Earth have joined forces to organise the event. Both groups are part of the Redditch Alliance of Greens(RAG) and this special film showing marks the official launch of the alliance.
The 3 films will last about an hour in total, and will be followed by an opportunity to chat about the issues raised whilst enjoying some fairtrade refreshments. There will also be fairtrade produce on sale and literature displayed regarding all the groups involved in RAG.
More details about RAG
RAG is, as it says, an alliance of local groups which are concerned with a broad range of environmental, ethical and social justice issues. RAG was formed in order to improve the communication and co-operation between local `green` groups. Although RAG member groups will clearly not agree on all issues, there is a consensus that supporting each other can only benefit the planet and it`s inhabitants. (see RAG member groups & history below)
RAG has launched a website where a calendar of forthcoming local `green` events can be found and there are links to member groups own websites. The RAG website also allows visitors to download the quarterly RAG newsletter - the first edition has recently been published. We would encourage anyone concerned about green issues to visit the RAG website, download the newsletter and distribute copies at your church, community group or even at school. RAG would be delighted to hear from any local `green` groups that would like to join the alliance and publicise their events on our website & newsletter.
More local groups & churches currently involved in RAG
Redditch Freecycle, Redditch Vegetarians & Vegans, Campaign to Protect Rural England(Redditch branch), Redi4Peace, Mount Carmel CAFOD Group, St Peters Church(Ipsley), Emmanuel Church(Town Centre)
RAG history
The Redditch Green Fair held at St Stephens Church(Town Centre) in June 2006 was the towns first ever independant green fair and involved many of the local environmental, ethical and social justice groups. The fair was organised loosely under the banner of the `Redditch Green Alliance`. At a subsequent meeting, participants were enthusiastic about working together in future, but it was decided to change our name to the `Redditch Alliance of Greens` or RAG for short.

Subject: [cafe] Help reduce waste by joining new cafe - Redditch Advertiser
Hi all,
In case anyone missed it, this article appeared in the Redditch Advertiser on Wednesday.
Clare
Help reduce waste by joining new cafe
Redditch Advertiser 15-11-06
AN environmental group is celebrating after reaching a milestone number of members 10 months after being formed.
Redditch Freecycle now has 1,000 members and is continuing to grow, with 30-40 people joining each week. To mark its achievement, it is now forming a discussion group.
Andy Griffin, of Redditch Freecycle, said: "We are overwhelmed by the success of the group.
"Just prior to forming 10 months ago we wondered if there would be any interest - but look at us now!
"In the last month alone several hundred items have been saved from landfill.
"Redditch doesn't seem to have an online forum for general discussion so we hope the Redditch Freecycle Cafe will fill this gap."
Redditch Freecycle is part of the worldwide and rapidly expanding Freecycle Network and its goal is to keep usable items out of landfill.
Freecycle groups match people who have things they want to get rid of with people who can use them.
Redditch Freecycle Cafe operates alongside the main group, allowing Freecycle users to get to know each other, share information and announce local community events.
Mr Griffin added: "While the new system for collecting household waste and recyclables is currently being introduced across the town, our cafe provides a means to discuss teething problems and to help each other to reduce our waste."

Dual purpose for posting today, both concerning bicycles!
Firstly, would anyone be interested in any cycle training, and for
free? Whether you want to start from the very basic skills (getting
on a bike for the first time in years...), or whether you are an
experienced cycle who just finds the odd motorist encroaching on the
roadspace you were happily cycling along in... For a short period of
time i.e. the next few weeks, I'm going to offer my services for
free!!! My recent redundancy has given me the time to be able to
offer my services. (I'm hoping to make a small part time business out
of it.) Visit www.workplaybike.co.uk for more information... I'm
both qualified and insured!
Secondly, having talked to the guys running PUSHBIKES in Brum, I'd
like to start a social cycling group in Redditch, meeting up
occasionally, not neccessarily with the sole purpose of talking
cycling. I've been to the Redditch Road and Path CC and they are far
keener on competition or distance rides. I on the other hand just
use a bike to get around and although do a little mountain biking,
dont consider myself a sports cyclist, more a utility and leisure
cyclist.... It would be nice to have a group of like minded souls to
meet occasionally. I'm on the Redditch Cycle Forum so it would be an
opportunity to either let me represent a group, or for others to join
me!
Feel free to contact me regarding the offers, hopefully we can get a
few more people onto the most efficient form of transport known to
man, the bicycle!
Cheers,
Andrew
Whether you`re a new member or not, you`ve got as much right to make
your point as anyone else, that`s what this cafe is for!
At some point soon, we hope to work out statistics for the weight of
stuff that Redditch Freecycle keeps out of landfill. We`ll do this
using standard weight estimates for all the popular items, and by
scanning through the messages to add them up!
Removing your original posts is fine, but please, please, please post
clear TAKEN messages, so that we can use them to work out the
statistics.
Also, new members sometimes scan through messages, to give them an idea
of what items people want. TAKEN messages show new members that an item
is popular and that if they offer something similar, it will probably
`go`!
In the not too distant future, all Freecycle groups may be moving to a
purpose built site where members will be able to mark the original post
with a TAKEN flag. We`ll keep you updated on this!
Bye for now,
Clare

A recycling milestone
Redditch Standard - 11 November 2006
A REDDITCH recycling group has enticed 1,000 members to sign up since forming less than a year ago.
Organisers behind Redditch Freecycle, aimed at keeping usable waste items out of landfills, have been celebrating after the group hit the landmark number of members.
And due to the astonishing rate at which the group is growing, at 30 to 40 new recruits a week, organisers have launched a recycling forum - Redditch Freecycle Cafe - to run alongside the network.
The forum allows users to get to know each other, share information and announce local community events.
Set up back in January, Redditch Freecycle is part of the worldwide and rapidly expanding Freecycle Network, which matches people who have things they want to get rid of such as furniture, electrical goods, garden equipment or toys, with people who need them, via a website.
Andy Griffin of Redditch Freecycle said they were totally overwhelmed by the group's popularity, and the forum was the next step for further success.
"Just prior to forming ten months ago, we wondered if there would be any interest, but look at us now," he said.
"In the last month alone several hundred items have been saved from landfill.
"And as Redditch doesn't seem to have an on-line forum for general discussion, we hope the Redditch Freecycle cafe will fill this gap."
Mr Griffin also believes the new forum will be of help to residents with the new waste collection scheme currently being introduced by Redditch Borough Council.
"With this new system being introduced all across the town, our cafe provides the means to discuss teething problems and to help each other reduce our waste," he added.
The Freecycle Network began in Tuscon, Arizona, in May 2003, and is made up of 3,000 individual groups across the globe with over 2.5 million members.

No admission charge, and members and bona fide guest welcome.
If your household has lots of milk/juice cartons which currently go to landfill, you may be interested to know that you can post them off to a company called Tetra Pak for recycling. They will turn them into various things including high strength paper bags & envelopes! See their website for more details http://tetrapakrecycling.co.uk/
By 2008, there should be widespread collection services for cartons across the UK.

After much consideration, we have decided to set up this discussion group to allow Redditch Freecycle members to get to know each other, share information, announce local events etc. Although, the forum has a `green` theme, messages on any topic are welcome as long as they`re polite, legal and suitable for all ages!
There are various reasons why the time seemed right to start this forum. Firstly, the Redditch Freecycle group has in the past few days hit 1,000 members, and is still expanding fast!
Thirdly, it will not have escaped your notice that Redditch Borough Council have just introduced their alternative weekly collection service for household waste/recyclables. It is inevitable that this new system will have some teething problems, but we hope it proves to be a success and think that an online forum will be a great place to discuss problems & help each other to reduce our waste!
Finally, if not now, WHEN??!! The year 2006 will go down in history as the year that both nationally and locally, people have realised that we cannot continue abusing the earth as we do! News of the devastating effect climate change will have on the planet has finally stirred the government, councils and general public alike into action!! Why is 2006 special locally?? Well, Redditch Freecycle was born in January this year. The first ever independant Redditch Green Fair took place in June. And a broad variety of local `green` groups(incl Redditch Freecycle) have now got together to form the Redditch Alliance of Greens (RAG). RAG have their own website http://www.redditch-ag.info where you will find a diary of local `green` events, details of participant groups and you can download the quarterly RAG newsletter which has just been released.
