Film in memory of campaigner Redditch Advertiser - 31/1/07
A FILM will be screened in St George's to mark the 12th anniversary of animal rights campaigner Jill Phipps' death.
The event is being organised by Redditch Vegetarian & Vegan Society (RVV), which promotes plant-based diets on animal welfare, human health and ecological grounds.
When calves started to be flown out of the airport in her home town of Coventry to the veal crates of Europe, Jill joined many demonstrations to try to stop the flights.
It was at one of these protests on February 1, 1995, that Jill was crushed to death under the wheels of a cattle truck as it entered the airport.
Jill's Film was produced for the 10th anniversary remembrance event in Coventry, Jill's Day 2005, but has since been screened to audiences around the globe.
Kevin White, of RVV said: "Whether audiences have sympathy for the animals or not, screening this film never fails to inspire people, who are often moved to tears by the tragic loss of such a caring, compassionate young mother.
"Redditch was the scene of numerous live exports protests in the late 1990s. One of the UK's main live export farms was based in Weights Lane, opposite the Abbey Stadium.
"Aside from weekly Thursday evening and Sunday protests, campaigners from across the country flocked to Redditch for several big demonstrations, including two national remembrance events for Jill in 1998 and 1999."
Jill's Film is being shown next Wednesday from 7.30pm at St Georges Community Hall. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to attend.
