INTRO
We seem to have had quite a lot of new local contacts recently, so I hope that those of you who are less au fait with the Veg Soc calendar haven't been worried about the late arrival of this issue of Network News. It happens every year because the normal deadline falls in National Vegetarian Week when most staff members are too busy to worry about writing anything. I have to give everyone a few days to recover after NVW has ended before I start nagging about copy.
( Online readers can see the NVW photos at: http://www.vegsoc.org/nvw/2006/events/goody.html )
As you can see from the cover photo, we made quite a splash with National Vegetarian Week this year! No, it's not me inside the banana suit, I pleaded my advanced age and stayed in the office to help with phone calls and emails.
Younger members of staff dressed as vegetables or scary monsters went roaming around Manchester city centre on Wednesday afternoon, promoting National Vegetarian Week by handing out hundreds of free goody bags, filled with items very kindly donated by Seedling Symbol clients. Did someone mention that the country is in the grip of a drought? Not in Manchester it wasn't. In fact, we were beginning to feel as though we would need to build an ark soon, but it did clear up just long enough for our promotional stunt so none of our vegetable volunteers ended up looking like an escapee from the compost heap!
I did help with the job of packing the goody bags the day before. We hadn't really grasped how much space a thousand goody bags need. It was fortunate the board room wasn't needed for a meeting because it ended up with little paper carrier bags lined up neatly on every available surface, including the floor, a bit like one of those odd art "installations" or the terracotta army. Collette describes this more thoroughly in the Veg Soc news section.
My own personal, out-of-work-hours contribution to NVW was to join my fellow Manchester BookCrossers, who inserted our postcards into suitable books and left them in odd places around the city centre on the Saturday.
We now have a new Youth Education Officer to replace Alex, who left us this Spring. Susan Furmage has used the Youth Pages of Network News to introduce herself, and to ask what you would like to see happening, both on the Youth Pages and in our Youth programme as a whole, so I hope you will get in touch with her to share your ideas as this is a good opportunity for some fresh thinking and new directions.
A little later this summer, we will be saying Goodbye to our Chief Executive, Tina Fox, who has decided it is time to retire. The new Chief Executive has been appointed, she is Annette Pinner, and she will be starting sometime in August. Tina used to be a local contact before she came to work here, so I knew her, albeit only through letters and phone calls, before she came to work here. It seems a little strange to try and imagine Parkdale without her, though I can't help wondering if, after having a taste of retirement, she might not revert to her former role as a local contact? Before Tina arrived we seemed to have new people at the helm every few years. She has given us 11 years of stability which are very much appreciated.
I expect most of you will be going on your summer holidays soon, so I hope you have a good summer break and fair weather!

VEG SOC NEWS
That was the week that was...
NVW 2006 achieved substantial media coverage and cuttings from the press are still rolling in! Early on in the week, we got an excellent plug on BBC 1's Saturday Morning Kitchen - the largest food programme on television - hosted by famous carnivore Anthony Worrall Thompson. He introduced a section of the show saying it was NVW and went on to do two veggie recipes using broccoli. He even mentioned NVW in his column in Saturday's Express newspaper's magazine and admitted that he is cutting down on meat too! We had a show pretty much dedicated to NVW on BBC's Good Food Live (cable) and veggie recipes were demonstrated.
Radio - we had an excellent response to our "Go Veggie" Challenge from DJs across the country including BBC Ulster, Newcastle, Derby and Jersey. Radio BBC Cornwall really got into the spirit of the week and requested a taste test of our veggie Cornish pasties. (This year we promoted an array of veggie dishes with a regional theme). Thanks to Liz O'Neil, who was initially interviewed on the show, NVW became the hot topic of the week when she was quizzed about our Cornish pasty recipe and its authenticity! It was quite a military operation but we managed to get contacts at a monkey sanctuary in Cornwall to bake some of the pasties and we then had them biked over the BBC studios in Cornwall.
The whole afternoon show broadcast team tucked in... they even invited a Cornish tin miner to give his verdict! I was invited on the show and we had great fun, the good news is that Mike, the Cornish tin miner, gave our pasties the thumbs up! Now, the crew from the show are sending The Vegetarian Society a tray of vegetable pasties from a traditional pasty maker based up the road from their studio... watch this space.
BBC Radio Manchester invited me on their breakfast show with Eamonn O'Neil and Dianne Oxbury (a lapsed veggie). It was a great discussion not only on the health benefits of going veggie but the ecological advantages too. By the end of the show both presenters agreed to go veggie not just for a week but for a month! They want me back at the end of June for an update slot. The show encouraged a lot of calls from the public and later that day the afternoon show invited a vegetarian chef on to give tips on cooking delicious veggie food.
One of this year's press releases was titled: 'What not to say to a vegetarian' and this light hearted topic inspired a lot of discussion.
Getting really into the spirit of the week and bringing the veggie message onto the streets, I organised a 'goody bag' day in the city centre of Manchester on 24 May (Wednesday). A team of Veg Soc staff members and volunteers, Nesta and Emily, helped pack over 1000 promotional bags the day before. It took real team work and everyone got stuck in, ensuring we were ready on time to hit the streets the next day.
A bunch of good sports from The Vegetarian Society staff joined me in dressing up as fruit and veg (and even aliens; in keeping with our 'vegetarianism, it's nothing to be scared of' theme). We hit the streets with over 1000 bags (recycled brown ones of course) containing donated products from our corporate clients (who loved getting involved in the week). Also in the bags were a NVW postcard with our details on for more info. We made quite an impact!
The response from office workers, students and shoppers was wonderful and we were constantly asked for information about going veggie and people of all ages and backgrounds were genuinely interested in the campaign. We had our photo taken by the local press and we were even stopped by Channel M TV (the local TV station) and interviewed on what we were doing - not easy when you are wearing an alien mask or a tomato costume, but we managed!
As for newspaper and magazines, the coverage, the quality and profile of this year's NVW has been brilliant, with literally hundreds of cuttings. Rather than lots of 'mentions' we have had really good, thought provoking articles and in depth articles on the health benefits of a veggie diet. This year we made it into lots of national papers including the Daily Express, the Mail on Sunday, the Guardian. We even had a full page in the hugely popular OK! magazine (500,000 readers).
We were featured in many other glossy magazines also. The Manchester Evening News ran a double page feature on NVW and bringing up veggie children, featuring a beautiful picture of Veg Soc's Communication Manager, Liz O'Neill and her son, Laurence. Weekly papers ran lots of articles on our veggie recipes and events for NVW. Finally, our NVW Favourite Vegetarian Celebrity Poll (the first of its kind this year) was a great success. Sir Paul McCartney received the most votes and told us he was "thrilled". The story made the national press in both England and Scotland and generated radio interest too.

AGM
I've been asked to remind you all about our AGM, which is being held here at Parkdale on Saturday 30th September. This is a little later than usual to enable members to attend the IVU Congress in Goa if they wish.
(http://www.ivu.org/congress/2006/index.html for info on the congress)
In addition to the business meeting, which starts at 2.30 on Saturday afternoon, our event is intended to provide a social forum where Society members can get to know each other and meet some of the staff and trustees. Members will be welcome from Friday and there is usually a meal out at a local vegetarian restaurant on Friday evening.
On Saturday, there will be a buffet lunch and in the evening, a four-course dinner cooked by our Cordon Vert School. Saturday morning will be free to give you time to explore local attractions such as Dunham Massey stately home and gardens, or for those who like shopping, the Trafford Centre! Members are welcome to attend for the whole event, or any part of it, but we do need to know numbers well in advance, so if you wish to come, please contact the Chief Executive's PA, Belinda by phone or email (0161 925 2000 or belinda@...) to request a booking form.
WOMAD
World of Music and Dance - returns to the banks of the River Thames in Reading in July 2006 for another extravaganza of music, arts and dance from around the world.
This year the Society is taking the baton from "One Voice for Veggies", masterminded by Sophie and Stephen Fenwick-Paul, and running the vegetarian information stand under our own banner.
Over seventy artists and groups from more than thirty countries will be appearing on seven stages at the festival; there will also be a full programme of interactive workshops for adults and children plus a Global Village of over 250 international food and merchandise stalls, including the Vegetarian Society stand and a good proportion of vegetarian food outlets.
The venue is The Rivermead leisure complex on Richfield Avenue in Caversham, Reading and the event runs from 28-30 July and attracts around 24,000 visitors.
If anyone is attending we would be thrilled if you would consider dropping by and putting in a couple of hours helping out, and talking to some of the thousands of people that call at the stand. There will be Society staff on hand all the time, so don't worry about having to know the answers to everything,
If you want any further information about the stand and WOMAD, or are able to pledge your time in advance (don't worry, just come along on the day if you prefer), just contact Chris at the Society - chris@... or tel: 0161 925 2022.

Speakers
Can I remind you all that although school talks are by far the most popular kind of speaker request we receive, there are a lot of speakers and cookery demonstrators on our list who aren't free during the day but are very happy to give talks in the evenings or at weekends? Some of these people don't get called out very often, which is a shame as many have something interesting to offer. If you know of any local organisations (like the WI) who are looking for speakers for evening or weekend talks, please direct them to us. There's a good chance we can help.
The day the mayors came...
Trafford's Madam Mayor, Pauleen Lane, played host at a special lunch at The Vegetarian Society on Monday, 8 May. She was joined by seven fellow mayors and their consorts, from around the Greater Manchester area, who were treated to a feast of delicious vegetarian cuisine. Madam Mayor Lane chose The Vegetarian Society as the location for her annual luncheon because she is keen to highlight the benefits of a diet rich in fruit and vegetables.
She said: "As a mother and a public figure, I think it is important to take an interest in healthy eating. I am a non-meat eater myself and I do recognise the health benefits of a vegetarian diet as it emphasises lots of grains, fruit and vegetables. I knew straight away that I would choose The Vegetarian Society as it is the only place of its kind in the UK and it is here on my very own doorstep in Trafford. Also, I know of friends who have trained at the Cordon Vert Vegetarian School and know how delicious the food is!"
The group of mayors enjoyed a vegetarian buffet lunch which included spinach and leak tortilla, tomato and marscapone tarts, mini courgette muffins and a selection of tasty vegetarian puddings.
The visit was recently featured in the local press along with a photo of the all the Mayors on the steps outside Parkdale.

Catering resources
We now have three separate items for caterers:
-Serving Vegetarians is a booklet for large-scale caterers such as hospitals, contract caterers, works canteens.
-Creative Catering is a pack for smaller scale caterers such as restaurants and guesthouses
-Vegetarian catering for schools and colleges does exactly what it says on the label!
These three items aren't interchangeable and none of them is suitable for handing out in bulk, so please think carefully before you order any, be sure you have planned where they are to go. I haven't said this to discourage you, because we feel it's excellent strategy for local groups to establish personal relationships with caterers, but to make sure you aren't left with a heap of booklets that you have no outlet for!

Dates from the Campaigns Calendar
Some events occur regularly every year and, even if not obviously veggie oriented in themselves, can still offer a good opportunity for expressing the vegetarian viewpoint if you join in. You might even make contact with a section of the community you don't normally meet. There's scope for organising an activity of your own, or taking a stall at a related event in your area. Some dates are fixed, others vary a little every year and you will need to look them up.

CORDON VERT UPDATE
In the last news from Cordon Vert we reported on our new Workshop in London 'Basque, Provence and the Loire Valley'. One of France's greatest treasures is its rich cuisine, it is considered to be one of the world's most refined and elegant styles of cooking, renowned for both classical haute cuisine and local provincial. This workshop celebrates these styles with the following dishes;
Rosemary & lemon artichoke & fennel; Provencal Puy Lentils; Lavender Chardonnay Sauce; Goat Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms; Baked Avocados; Provencal Biscuits & Socca.
'Socca' is a Provencal pancake that dates back to at least 1860. It was originally called Socca de Nice and was made from chick-pea flour. The Marseilles version is today made with a mixture of flours, using only a small amount of chick-pea flour; in Marseilles this was called "tourta tota cada" or nice hot tarts.
This course will be run for the first time on the 3rd July. It currently has just one place available. For anyone who is unlucky with booking a place this time then the course is being run again on the 20 January 2007.
Back here at Parkdale our other new course 'Casablanca Workshop' ran successfully for the first time on 12th May up here in Altrincham with Six attendees.
If you enjoy Tapas and Mezze, you'll love this introduction to Moroccan cookery.
" A blend of traditional Mediterranean ingredients with exotic Arabian spices and fruits makes this the basis of an exciting hands on workshop. Focusing on key ingredients including almonds, preserved lemons, ginger, saffron, orange blossom water and figs, you will be creating not only traditional dishes such as vegetable tagine and couscous, but there will also be an opportunity to make your own spicy harissa paste and special charmoula marinade. Other recipes include harira soup, a sweet pastille and, of course, the classic mint tea to finish off your meal.
So, if you can imagine enjoying these wonderful dishes to the sounds of authentic Moroccan Street music, this should give you a real insight into what this Moroccan course, can offer.
This course is tipped to become the most popular of our day courses. Its second running on 3rd June ran fully booked and the next date on the 18th August is starting to fill now.

YOUTH PAGES
Hello from the new Youth Education Officer
Hello, Network News readers! I am the Vegetarian Society's new Youth Education Officer. Alex Connell, who served in the role for the past six and a half years, left the Society in April to pursue other dreams in Devon. Thanks to Alex we have, among other things, the wonderful resources A Parent and Teenager Guide to Vegetarianism, Young Veggie, The Schools Project Book (for GCSE food technology students), and the Teachers Activity Pack. He served the UK's young veggies and their teachers well. We send him many thanks and wish him all the best.
Now I'd like to tell you a little bit about myself. I am American by birth - born and raised on the East Coast, not too far from Washington, DC. I became a vegetarian in my late teens, thanks in large part to the campaigning of Veg Soc patron Paul McCartney and his late wife, Linda. (There weren't too many vegetarians in semi-rural America back in the late 80s so Paul and Linda became my role models.) I studied musical theatre at university and spent a fabulous semester and summer in London. Thus began my love affair with the UK!
I have worked as an actor, a Starbucks' barista, and, for the most recent six years of my career, I have had the privilege of working with young people in the Washington, DC metropolitan school system. I am an avid traveller. I have spent lots of time exploring Great Britain and Ireland, as well as continental Europe. My husband (who happens to be British) and I have twice taken year-long trips around the world, visiting some truly amazing places. We completed our last trip in November 2005 and decided it was time to settle down. And now here I am at the Vegetarian Society!
My friends and family cannot believe my good fortune. I have found a job that allows me to combine two of my life's great passions: young people and vegetarianism; and my veggie role model, Sir Paul McCartney, is a Society patron! It does seem like fate, doesn't it?
I am really excited about my new job. I am eager to offer my support and assistance to young veggies and their parents; and I am keen to continue spreading a positive vegetarian message in schools, colleges, and universities. I look forward to being in touch with all of you again soon.
All the best,
Susan

Tell me about yourself
You've heard about me, now I'd like to hear about you! A challenge for me in writing this instalment of the Youth Page is not knowing my audience. So if you are reading this, whether you are young or young at heart, PLEASE drop me a line and let me know who you are. What have you enjoyed about the Network News Youth Page in the past? How do you think it can be improved? Do you like to see games, recipes, or just a lot of news on these pages? What aspects of the Youth Education programme are of particular interest to you? The more I know about you, the better I can tailor these pages to your interests. My email address again is susan@.... You can also call me or write to me at Veg Soc (address at the top). I love to get mail in my mailbox!
Share your ideas
And while you're writing and calling me about the Youth Page, why not share your ideas about the Youth Education programme as a whole? I'm guessing that some of you have been around a long, long time. How would you like to see the Youth Education programme develop over the coming months and years? How can we better serve young vegetarians, their parents and teachers? How can we make The Vegetarian Society more exciting and interesting for young people? Today's young vegetarians will lead the way for vegetarianism in the future. The more support and encouragement we can offer them today, the more confident they will be tomorrow. Please help me to make the Vegetarian Society's Youth Education programme as dynamic and effective as possible. Here's my email address again: susan@...
Photos of Young Veggie Needed!
The Communications Team is working on creating an archive of photos of young veggies for possible use in our upcoming publications and on the website. If you have a really great photo of yourself or your child that says, "Hey! I'm young, I'm fun, and I'm a vegetarian!" and you wouldn't mind it being used by The Vegetarian Society, please email it to susan@... or stick it in the post. Please note: All photos must be accompanied by an email or note stating that you give your permission for the photo to be used by The Vegetarian Society. If you are under eighteen, your parents must also give their permission for us to use your photo. If you prefer that your photo be used in print materials only but not on the web (or vice versa), please state that in your note of consent. Make sure you tell us your age, the date the photo was taken, and what makes the photo special to you. Thanks for your help!

Youth Lit
Our new booklet, "Young Veggie" has now arrived. Please remember that this replaces the two youth starter packs which were called "Guide for Life" which have now run out (a few of you have been trying to order them still).
The recipe bookmarks are also running out rapidly and we now only have one "variety" left.
The good news is that we have had a reprint of "Growing Up" the guide to nursery school catering. Although this is intended for nursery schools, it isn't so "large scale" as the other catering booklets mentioned earlier, so it is of use to parents of young children.
INTERESTED IN HELPING WITH OUR WORK?
