Tuesday 29th November 2005
Hi everyone,
Our first meeting held on 2nd November, was very positive and productive.
In spite of the awful weather that evening, 13 people attended. Everyone
seemed keen to meet up monthly, in order to stay in touch with news and
events.
Our next meeting will take place on Wednesday 7th December from 7.30pm at
the same venue, St Georges Community Hall, St Georges Road. Once again,
we will display a range of factsheets and leaflets on various issues and
there will be a `library` of books relating to veggie/veganism - you will
be able to take these home and read at your leisure. There will also be
refreshments and mince pies for everyone, how can you resist coming
along!!
Agenda items will include the following:
Feedback from the coach trip to the Viva! Incredible Veggie Show in
London
We hope to announce details of our first meal out in Redditch, to
take place in January (if you can`t attend the meeting, but would
like to come to the meal, please get in touch as we may not be able
to mail out again beforehand and we need an idea of numbers
interested)
We`ll discuss the possibility of setting up a Redditch Food Co-Op, or
alternatively supporting schemes like the Hopwood Organic Farm (see
www.hopwoodorganic.co.uk)
Response from our MP, Jacqui Smith, re our letter to her about the
lack of vegetarian/vegan meal options in some Redditch schools(this
was brought to our attention at the last meeting)
We`ll discuss plans for the Festive Food Fair in Leamington on
Saturday 17th December(several Redditch people intend to help at the
event) An event leaflet is enclosed. The fair will be larger than the
Redditch event, with more attractions and stalls, and will therefore
need more helpers! Please get in touch if you can help. We also need
to find someone else who can drive and offer a lift to some helpers
Setting up a group bank account
We also plan to discuss the groups finances! We need to cover the cost of
hiring the meeting room and sending this mailout, via donations or
fundraising. If you`re able to send a donation, please make cheques
payable to `Kevin White` (until we set up a RVV account), and send to the
address above.
A RVV leaflet is enclosed. It would be great if you could display this
somewhere like a shop window, noticeboard, cafe etc and therefore help
publicise veggie/veganism and the group. Even better, print off some more
and distribute them amongst your friends, colleagues etc.
We look forward to seeing you at the meeting,

There was an advert in the Redditch Standard recently about an organic
farm and delivery service near Solihull. They offer a wide range of
organically farmed fruit and veg, which they can deliver to your door.
They also farm/sell organic meat, so it`s not perfect from our point of
view. They have a detailed website here http://www.hopwoodorganic.co.uk/ and
i`ve just sent for a brochure. If a food co-op for Redditch is not
possible, maybe this is the next best thing. Has anyone got any thoughts
on this?? Kevin

accounts for this one being a bit mangled!! All the info below can be

Has anyone got any ideas for agenda items for the next RVV meeting on
Wednesday 7th December?? (to be held at St Georges Community Hall again
from 7.30pm).
I`m trying to encourage along some people that are interested in setting
up a Redditch Food Co-Op, so hopefully that will be an agenda item. We
will announce details of our first local meal out, which we decided would
be fixed for sometime in January. And the new Leamington Veggies & Vegans
group are holding a Free Festive Veggie Food Fair on Saturday 17th
December, which some of us will be helping at, so we`ll discuss that.
Also feedback from the coach trip to the London Viva Veggie Show, which 4
Redditch people went to.
We also need to discuss funds, including the cost of hiring the
meeting room and cost of mailing out to those that requested to be kept
informed(on the fair questionnaires).

Would you mind letting me have Ruth's contact details so that I can ask her
advice about organising a meal if I need to. It would be quite helpful.
I have purchased a book from Amazon called 'vegan freak - being a vegan in a
non-vegan world'. I am going to read it and then it can form part of the library
for the redditch group.

Brilliant. Perhaps it should be copied to the headteacher of Arrow Vale School?
It really does disciminate against pupils who have free school meals that
they're not allowed salad. It's appalling!
Redditch Veggie-Vegans <reddiveggie@...> wrote:Following on from
discussions about the lack of provision for
vegetarians/vegans in Redditch schools at last nights meeting, Karen has

Kevin
Dear Ms Smith
PROVISION OF SCHOOL MEALS
We are members of the newly formed Redditch Vegetarians and Vegans Group,
and we would ask for clarification on the present and future availability
of vegetarian/ vegan meals in Redditch Schools.
We note, according the DFE website that you have responsibility for
School
meals / healthy schools and equality issues including race and ethnic
minorities in education. Ruth Kelly recently made a statement that this
government would make changes to the provision of school meals to ensure
that healthy options are to be made available to all students. Whislt the
DFE website provides strict guidance as to what food should not be given
to people of different faiths, the only information to school caterers
for
vegetarians is as follows:
" Vegetarians * Many people are vegetarian. You should make every effort
to offer a variety of vegetarian options".
This statement indicated that there is no compulsion on schools to
provide
any vegetarian or does not even mention provision of vegan food.
We are aware, of at least one pupil within Redditch, who is not given any
choice of meal. The only food made available is pizza and chips, five
days
a week. Whilst we understand that salad pots are put out for other
students, the fact that this pupil allegedly " benfits" from the
provision
of free school meals, means that salads for some unknown reason are not
offered as an option. We understand that vegan food is never made
available. Protestations to the head teacher have not resolved this
unsatisfactory position, and there is no formal grievance procedure
provided to allow further action. There may be more schools within this
area that do not cater for vegetarians/vegans * does the DFE monitor the
provision of meals?
We are sure that the government has not intentionally overlooked
vegetarians but unless something is done to address the situation now,
the
provisoin of foods to certain groups of young people will go unresolved.
We ask for your assistance on this matter and ask that stronger guidance
is given to schools as we believe that we as a major and growing group of
people have somehow been missed out of the future plan for schools.

Sorry I couldn't make it last night. Actually I completely forgot about it -
but had a gig the night before and didn't get to bed till 4.30am and then
had to get up for work at 7.50am - so I was shattered. And I'm super crazy
busy at the moment.
You might want to check the following typos:
whislt - should be whilst
benfits - should be benefits
provisoin - should be provision
But it sounds good.

Following on from discussions about the lack of provision for
vegetarians/vegans in Redditch schools at last nights meeting, Karen has
written the following draft letter. Does everyone think this is ok??

I have not long come back from the first vegetarian & vegan meeting. It
was possibly a smaller turnout than first expected but this could have
been due to the horrible weather. We disscused various issues and our
youngest (current) member expressed concern about school meals. Arrow
Vale High School is a recognised Sports college but from what we have
heard is serving unhealthy burgers and fries to it's pupils with little
in the way of a vegetarian alternative. If anyone knows which governing
body awards schools their titles please let me know. Other members
mentioned a co-operative as an idea for the group where healthy foods
could be ordered in bulk giving it's members value for money. It is
likely that the group will also be going out for a meal in the near
future. For all members and would-be members please keep in touch don't
leave it to everyone-else to stay in touch and remember that we can
make more of a impact on local companies as a group than as indviduals.

Veggie group`s booster
Birmingham Mail 17-10-05
Dozens of meat lovers have ditched burgers in favour of celery sticks
after attending a Redditch event promoting vegetarianism.
The visitors converted after getting their mouths around a host of foods
at the extravaganza organised by the Redditch Vegetarians & Vegans(RVV)
organisation.
The number of people visiting the event far outstripped expectation. More
than 500 people turned up to St Stephen`s Church Hall in Redditch with 30
people asking about becoming a member of the group.
Mark Higgins, a spokesman for RVV said: "It was more successful than we
had ever anticipated. The hall was packed out from start to finish, food
was disappearing off the tables faster than we could replace it. People
started to flood through the doors well before the event had officially
opened."

Some food for thought
Redditch Standard 14-10-05
Crowds flocked to a town centre church on Saturday(October 8) to try out
a variety of vegetarian and vegan delights.
St Stephen`s Church played host to a free food-tasting extravaganza put
on by Redditch Vegetarians and Vegans, a group which supports healthy
lifestyles and promotes the benefits of vegetarian and vegan diets.
Around 500 visitors sampled a variety of meat alternatives including
burgers, sausages, samosas and tortillas as well as a range of dairy-free
cheeses, cakes & ice creams.
Stalls were set up offering recipes, nutrition magazines and information
on vegetarian and vegan diets, and residents were also able to buy
cosmetics, stationery and toiletries. Some visitors were even treated to
an holistic back massage.
Group member, Kevin White, said they were overwhelmed by the response
they had received.
"It was encouraging to see so many people taking an interest," he said.
"Both the food and the literature was flying off the tables faster than
we could replace it."
"Nowadays people are becoming more concerned about their health and the
food they eat, so this was the perfect opportunity to explore healthy
alternatives."
Mr White said the group was determined to see more of these events and he
hoped the myth that vegetarian and vegan food was not very appetising had
been dispelled.
"Nearly 100 people filled in questionnaires offering us positive feedback
and a third expressed an interest in joining Redditch Vegetarians and
Vegans," he said.

The following report can also be found(with pictures) on the Redditch
Vegetarians and Vegans website here
http://www.redditchveggies.makessense.co.uk/articles/191.html
How we organised and publicised our first food fair
After helping at a successful Veggie Food Fair in Coventry in April `05,
campaigners in Redditch decided to organise a similar event in our own
town. A convenient date was set(8th October), and the most suitable,
accessible, central venue in town(St Stephens Church) was booked.
Redditch Vegetarians and Vegans was formed in order to publicise the
event and also to find likeminded people across the town to get involved
with veggie/vegan campaigning, socialising etc. This website was created,
which later proved to be invaluable in providing detailed information
about what potential event attendees could expect to find. Approx 7-8
weeks before the date of the fair, leaflets were printed and we began to
distribute them throughout the town. A4 posters were also printed and
displayed on noticeboards, shop windows, libraries etc. In order to raise
funds towards the event, and also to publicise it some more, various
leaflet stalls were held in Redditch Town Centre, at Hillfields Sanctuary
Open Day and elsewhere.
We got in touch with various national campaigning groups, asking them to
mail out to all their members throughout the Redditch area. News of the
fair and the formation of RVV was mailed out by Viva!, Peta and The Vegan
Society
Various sympathetic people/groups in Redditch and beyond, displayed a
text or banner link(see below) to our website, on their own websites.
Several people within RVV began to prepare large amounts of home made
food, weeks in advance. Letters were written to well known veggie food
producers, inviting them to send food donations. Redwoods Wholefoods,
Granovita, Alpro and Beanies Health Foods all sent a very generous
assortment of their products, but the best came from Fayrefield, who sent
us 36 tubs of Swedish Glace, their delicious dairy-free ice cream!!
Although we were able to find many of our volunteers within Redditch, we
didn`t have enough local supporters to enable us to properly run the
event. In the weeks leading upto the fair, approx 10 people from
Birmingham, Solihull and Coventry were found to help us out on the day.
Some of these also helped us prepare food before the event.
An excellent letter from one of members, was printed in the local press 2
weeks before the fair. The letter, written in response to an article
about school dinners, was the first time the forthcoming fair was brought
to the attention of 1,000`s of people across the town. Read the letter
here
2 weeks before the big day, we sent off a press release to all local
media and 2 Redditch papers arranged a photo shoot with us(see pic). Both
of these, and 3 more local papers, printed excellent articles advertising
the event. Click the following links to read articles in the respective
papers - Redditch Standard, Birmingham Evening Mail and Redditch
Advertiser The recently launched Radio Redditch broadcast news of the
forthcoming fair over several days.
Just 10 days before the fair, the government announced their intention to
ban junk food in schools, so we seized the opportunity to write to every
school in Redditch inviting along pupils, their parents, teachers and
kitchen staff, to sample healthy veggie/vegan food.
On the Saturday before the fair, we displayed our posters advertising the
event in the town centre, whilst we distributed several hundred leaflets
to passers by. This was repeated again on the Thursday and Friday before
the fair.
2 Midlands radio stations(The Bear and Saga) contacted us a couple of
days before the event, wanting a member of RVV to give pre-recorded
interviews about the fair. These were both broadcast on their news
bulletins throughout the morning of the fair.
At the fair, 2 Redditch newspapers(Standard and Advertiser) sent
photographers along to take some snaps. And a couple of days after the
event, we press released news of how the fair went, which helped local
papers to write an accurate report.
Thanks to all this great publicity, the fair was a huge success(read full
report) and many people have since got in touch with us about joining the
group etc.
Why don`t you organise a free veggie food fair in your town?? Not only
will you persuade people to adopt a cruelty-free diet, you`ll also find
new people to get involved in campaigning! Start to plan it as early as
we did, get as many people involved as possible and be sure to contact
all your local media well in advance. Give it a shot, you can`t go
wrong!! See the Realfood guide to organising a free food fair.

=====================================================================
Redditch Free Veggie Food Fair report
On Saturday 8th October 2005, Redditch tasted it`s first ever veggie food
extravaganza, and it turned out to be a bigger success than we could ever
have imagined!! Crowds of people flocked into St Stephens Church to
sample the delicious delights of a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle, for FREE.
People started to flood through the doors well before the event had
officially opened. We planned to open at 10.30am, but by this time the
hall was already crowded, and dozens of people were tucking in to our
free healthy feast!! St Stephens Church hall was packed out from start to
finish, food was disappearing off the tables faster than we could replace
it!! We estimate that throughout the day, around 500 people attended the
event!
There was a vast array of food on offer including burgers, samosas,
sausage rolls, mexican tortilla, quiche, falafel, curry, vegan
cheese/sausages on cocktail sticks and a range of irresistible cakes.
Several well known producers of veggie/vegan food, donated huge
quantities of their products - including 36 tubs of dairy-free ice cream!
The event couldn`t have taken place without these companies generosity
Redwoods Wholefoods, Granovita, Fayrefield, Alpro and Beanies Health
Foods
Our free recipes, veggie magazines, nutrition factsheets and
leaflets(detailing the many reasons why we promote the veggie/vegan
lifestyles), were also flying off the tables quicker than we could
replenish them. Our stocks of some literature had totally run dry before
the end of the fair!
Food tasters were encouraged to fill in a short questionnaire about the
event, and over 90 were completed. Dozens of people who attended as meat
eaters, have pledged to change their diet after tasting the delights of
veggie food. 30 people have said they want to join RVV, for socialising,
meals out and to help promote the vegetarian & vegan diets via more food
fairs, information stalls etc.
Our team of volunteers worked flat out throughout the event. We had no
time to tuck in ourselves thanks to the constant stream of people
flooding through the door.
As well as the food and literature tables, we also had an impressive
display of veggie/vegan food(still in it`s packaging), bought from local
supermarkets. This was great at showing people how easy it is to come by
vegan food, without travelling far, or visiting specialist health food
shops. It also made people aware that many of the products they already
buy, are actually vegan!
There were also 5 stalls selling a wide range of ethical, cruelty-free
products including chocolate, badges, books, stationery, nutrition
wallcharts, clothing, vegan cosmetics/toiletries and lots more. Groups
that held stalls included Viva!, Realfood, Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane
Research and Redditch Friends of the Earth
We simply couldn`t have hoped for a better event to launch Redditch
Vegetarians and Vegans. Many thanks to our team of dedicated volunteers
who slaved all day(and some for weeks beforehand) to provide delicious
veggie food for the masses! And thanks to the companies listed above, for
their generous donations of veggie food. Thanks also to St Stephens
Church for letting us use their excellent central venue, and finally,
thanks to everyone who attended. We are determined to hold these fairs as
often as possible, so keep an eye on this website for details of future
events.
Click here to read a report about how we organised and publicised the
food fair, and don`t forget to visit our gallery where you`ll find loads
more great photos from this event.

hosting a food fair at St Stephen`s Church in the town centre.
Residents will be able to sample a variety of alternatives to meat
including vegetarian and vegan burgers, sausages and curries as well as
salads, crisps, pasta and rice. Home-made cakes, biscuits and
refreshments will also be available.
Visitors can pick up factsheets, nutritional information and recipes as
well as browse round stalls selling books, cards, cosmetics and
chocolates. A face-painter will also be on hand to keep the children
entertained.
Group member, Peter Wilson, said: "Our agenda is that tasty, nutritious
food should be available to everyone, including those on a low income,
and that it should be cruelty-free in its production."
Kevin White, also a member, said they wanted to dispel the myth that
vegetarian and vegan food was not very appetising.
"Many people believe that this type of food is not very tasty, and we
want to change that," he said.
"The event is a great way for anyone to try out vegetarian and vegan food
and see for themselves that there are delicious alternatives to meat."
The event takes place between 10.30am and 3pm.

Preparations for Redditch`s first ever Free Veggie Food Fair are going
really well. We now have food donations from Redwoods, Beanies, Granovita
and Alpro. Orders have been placed for mammoth quantities of nutritious
veggie food. Volunteers have been found to produce for us, home made
delicious, dazzling delights that would persuade the most committed meat
eaters to ditch this dirty, unhealthy habit!!
Posters have been displayed across the town and leaflets continue to be
distributed all over. Our website is getting increasing numbers of
visitors. Every single school in Redditch has been sent a letter,
encouraging pupils, parents, teachers and kitchen staff to attend the
fair(we jumped on the opportunity to promote healthy, veggie food after
yesterdays announcement that junk food is to be banned in schools)!
Look out for articles advertising the event in local papers and keep an
ear on local radio stations! There are 80,000 residents in Redditch, and
we intend to tell them all about our first food fair, and why they should
be going veggie, or better still vegan!!!
Can you help??
The event will surely be a huge success, but we need more help to pull it
off!! If you are free on the day, please join us at St Stephens Church in
Redditch and help serve food, leaflet the public, run stalls, serve
refreshments or even wash up!! Even if you can only manage an hour, that
would give one of those that plan to be there all day, a well earned
break!
Although we have some food donations, most of the food has been payed for
by volunteers, who must be paid back. If you can help us cover the cost
of turning Redditch cruelty-free, please get in touch.
For loads more details about the food fair, and also recipes, why
veggie/vegan pages, local veggie-friendly shops/restaurants and lots
more, check out our website

Letter in Redditch Advertiser 28-9-05
Food for thought on school dinners
THE parent who expressed his concern over the recently introduced
"healthy eating" policy at Ipsley Middle School, as doubtless defined by
a certain celebrity chef (Advertiser, September 14), raised some
important issues about our perception of food.
Caught as they are between the seductive blandishments of food
advertising, the desire to cater for their children's preferences and the
often conflicting advice of professional nutritionists, it is small
wonder parents feel confused, patronised and implicitly criticised by the
born-again zeal of many education authorities with regards to what ends
up on their children's plates, particularly if what they serve up at home
continues to resemble what passed for decades as standard school fare.
Increasingly, however, along with its protein, fats and carbohydrates,
21st century food appears to have acquired a moral component and to be
polarised into "good" and "bad" food, qualities which one ingests along
with fibre, cholesterol and vitamins.
Redditch Vegetarians and Vegans have decided therefore to try in a small
way to re-evaluate food and demonstrate what it signifies to us and to
this end, are hosting a free food tasting extravaganza in St Stephen's
Church on October 8 from 10.30-3pm.
We are taking on Jamie Oliver in the kitchen and our only agenda is that
tasty, nutritious food should be available to everyone, including those
on a low income, and that it should be cruelty-free in its production.
Those who still have an appetite for debate, to say nothing of a dazzling
array of delicious dishes, will find on offer everything from the
saintliness of salads to the junk food staples of burgers, sausages and
crisps, with spicy curries, heavenly puddings, vegetable side dishes,
pasta and rice accompaniments, home-made cakes, dips and savouries, all
served in a cordial and inviting atmosphere.
Besides the free food tasting, free leaflets, magazines, fact sheets and
recipes will also be available, in addition to stalls selling a wide
range of items including badges, books, stationery, cards, cosmetics and
toiletries, chocolate, clothing and lots more.
So if Christmas shopping has left you peckish, you will find a warm
welcome and a full plate at Redditch's first cruelty-free food fair.
