Les Estivales de la question animale : édition 2009
Lettre d'info juin 2009
1/ Le projet des Estivales
2/ Informations pratiques
3/ Programme 2009

Estivales newsletter, June 2009
1) The project of the Estivales
2) Practical information
3) This year's programme
Greetings to all!
We are pleased to invite you to the 2009 edition of the Estivales de la question animale, which will take place starting August 15 at the Parménie centre in South-West France.
The Estivales is an annual encounter organized every Summer since 2002 open to all persons interested in exploring the issues concerning our relations to animals. This year's programme includes contributors from Austria, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland in addition to those from France, and discussions on issues such as animal experimentation - from an ethical and militant point of view -, the repression of the animal movement in Austria, and the perception of animals across different cultures.
And as usual, these encounters will allow new contacts to be made between participants, new projects to be imagined...
Yours,
The organizers of the Estivales
The Estivales project
The Estivales bring together each Summer since 2002 people willing to discuss the issues of the the animal question in a studious but relaxed atmosphere. Their purpose is to promote the circulation of ideas, opinions, knowledge and experience in this field.
The animal question is a vast one and each issue allows for a large array of positions. For many of us it is a subject for daily reflection and attention, bringing us to challenge our own and others' relationships to animals. Many too are those whose daily activities directly concern the issue, be it because they depend on the use of animals for their livings or because they are active in advocating the abolition of all animal exploitation, or simply because they are consumers of meat. The animal question is present at the heart of our cultures, of our philosophies, of our visions of ourselves... Indeed, it concerns the whole of society and all humans.
Practical information
This year, the Estivales will be held from August 15 to 22 at Parménie, a pleasant resort in the low mountains between Lyon and Grenoble, in South-Eastern France.
It is possible to sleep on the premises of the encounter - in dormitories or rooms - or on the camping site nearby, and to participate in the common meals (vegan). Please book in advance if possible, so as to allow us to better foresee the number of participants, and to help us with the advance payments we must make. Booking also allows you to specify the kind of lodging you prefer, since the number of beds in separate rooms is limited.

Please avoid bringing male dogs, and, if possible, bring no dogs at all, for the tranquillity of the discussions.
The rates are calculated to cover costs, and therefore are affordable. However, if the prices appear too high with regard to your personal situation, do not hesitate to let us know.
For more information on prices, booking, etc., please visit the Estivales website: www.question-animale.org (English language).

Le Estivales de la question animale : edizione 2009
Newsletter giugno 2009
1. Il progetto Estivales
2. Informazioni pratiche
3. Programma 2009
Salve a tutte e a tutti,

A presto!

Hi all,
I'm almost certain I sent this last week but in any case nobody has come
forward and it would be a pity if this opportunity were lost.
I can't do it because although my health improved after becoming vegan
(20 years of 'orrible 'ay-fever disappearing overnight) it wasn't as a
result of advice received.
Please let Amanda (media@...) know if you can take part
and/or please pass it on to as many vegans as possible.
Thanks,
Patricia

Hi All,
If you fancy a few days of concentrated veganism on a beautiful
university campus with excellent accommodation and sporting facilities
and good food, you may want to consider Pennsylvania. I was there 2
years ago.
There is no extra charge for admiring the groundhogs that run around the
campus. Apparently the students feed them during term-time so they are
quite tame.

Redditch Vegetarians & Vegans are co-ordinating the annual Animal Aid street collection in Redditch on Saturday 4th July. We have a permit to collect throughout the town centre, including inside the Kingfisher Shopping Centre.

If you have an hour or so to spare, why not come along to shake a tin, help raise funds for Animal Aid`s invaluable campaigns that promote vegetariansm/veganism. In previous years, over £200 has been collected by just a handful of volunteers, imagine how much we could make if you bring all your friends!! Children under 16 are welcome to help, as long as they`re accompanied by an adult. Come for an hour or come for the whole day - any time you can spare would be very much appreciated.

We have everything you will need - tins, sashes, leaflets, stickers etc. There will also be a stall by the Three Cooks Bakery in the centre of town from 10.30am, from where you can collect your tins etc. For more details, please email reddiveggie@... or call 01527 458395.

Best wishes,

THE VEGAN SOCIETY IS 64 YEARS OLD - see www.vegansociety.com.

My name's LJ, I'm the manager of a lovely acoustic artist by the name of
Jimmy Richards and we live in Scotland where the vegan scene has begun
to flourish over the last few years.

Jimmy & I are both vegan, we're going to be touring the UK in July to
promote Jimmy's new record and we'd love to have some support from our
fellow vegans. Neither of us has ever done a full UK tour before and we
don't know many faces in England. Some of our dates are:

- 2 July - The Madhouse, Birmingham
- 16 July - The Cobden Club, London
- 19 July - The Norfolk Inn, Stoke-on-Trent

We'll be spending a couple of days in each town and we'd love to meet
members of The Vegan Society.
It would also be great if you could point me in the direction of any
vegan-friendly radio stations that we could contact.

Thanks for reading this & I hope to hear from you soon.
Kind regards,

Eco Extravaganza is Hailed a Success

Redditch Advertiser 24/6/09

A GLORIOUSLY sunny day helped to ensure the success of the fourth annual Redditch Green Fair. On Saturday June 13, crowds flocked to St Stephen's Church in the town centre to learn about eco-friendly living at the event.

A total of 24 stalls filled St Stephen’s and the green outside. Stalls offered a very wide range of eco-friendly products, awareness raising information and displayed electric powered bicycles/vehicles, solar panels and wind turbines. There were also two tombolas and a fundraising raffle.

Members of Redditch Vegetarians and Vegans put on an impressive feast of free vegan food samples alongside recipes, nutrition information and details of the environmental benefits of plant based diets. Further catering was provided by Green Garden Cafe, a not-for-profit vegan catering business from Coventry.

Redditch-based group Talking Drums offered fair-goers the opportunity to join their drumming circle throughout the event. Further entertainment was provided by DeadMoney Duo, father and son musicians from Worcester. Many people also enjoyed a relaxing Indian head massage.

The event was organised by the Redditch Alliance of Greens (RAG), a coalition of local environmental groups.

Kevin White of RAG said: "Once again, the Redditch Green Fair showcased the growing number of local eco-friendly businesses alongside environmental organisations and campaign groups.

"It’s an eco extravaganza like no other for miles around, so it’s no wonder that many of our visitors come back year after year. The fair demonstrated that we can all easily adapt to planet-friendly living.

"If we value our children’s future, then doing nothing about climate change, over use of resources, pollution etc is simply not an option.â€

All of the businesses and organisations at the fair have websites which are linked to www.redditchgreenfair.org.uk.

Hi everyone
Good, positive publicity for the Vegan Organic Network in an article
that appeared recently in the Big Issue Scotland: 'What if the World
Went Vegetarian (p. 3-4).

You can see this at http://tinyurl.com/VONBIGISSUE
(Shame about the fish article on p. 2!)

It was great to be given the opportunity to put our views into the
debate,
provide positive examples such as Tolhurst Organic Produce and to
provide
information to counter the National Farmers Union arguments.

The article has also generated a further media enquiry.

Thanks, as ever, to Tolly who was able to do a phone interview.

Birmingham pair starved dogs to death
Jun 5 2009 by Nick McCarthy, Birmingham Mail
A BROTHER and sister from Birmingham have been told to expect a prison
sentence for starving two greyhound dogs and a cat to death. Two other
greyhounds were rescued from Julie Geanno's house late last year by the
RSPCA.
Geanno, 36, of Allcroft Road, Tyseley, admitted four charges of animal
cruelty at Birmingham Magistrates' Court.
Her brother, Stephen Watton, 46, of Nash Square, Perry Barr, pleaded
guilty
to the same charges. He was caught digging graves in Geanno's back
garden.
Veterinary surgeon, Steve Odell, told the court they were the "worst
cases
of starvation" he had seen in his career.
He said starvation was the cause of death and the neglect had lasted for
at
least two months.
The animals were emaciated and were covered in fleas and the house was
squalid and covered in dog faeces when the RSPCA and police arrived last
October.
Two greyhounds called Pearl and Annie were rescued by the RSPCA weighing
just 15.6kg and 18kg.
The RSPCA returned the next day to exhume the bodies of Spud the cat,
who
weighed just 1.05kg, little more than a bag of sugar.
Two other greyhounds, Star and Meggie, were also exhumed from the back
garden graves and weighed just 11.25 and 11.85kg.
Mr Odell said: "All the animals were emaciated to a point I have never
seen
before in my career.
"I have never seen one animal in this condition, let alone three from
the
same address. The two surviving dogs would not have lived for more than
a
few weeks if there had been no intervention. "
Summing up, District Judge Tate told Watton and Geanno: "There is little
or
no doubt you caused unnecessary suffering to these animals.
"There is also no shadow of a doubt the seriousness of these offences
passes
the custody threshold.
"The length of time this went on for and the circumstances around the
disposal of the bodies are aggravating features.
"You will also be banned from keeping animals for a considerable period
of
time.
"I am adjourning the hearing for the preparation of pre-sentence reports
on
both of you."
The pair were bailed and will be sentenced on July 1.

THE VEGAN SOCIETY IS 64 YEARS OLD - see www.vegansociety.com.

Pizza Express have been inundated by feedback from more than 200 vegans,
vegetarians and others seeking a clearly labelled vegan option on the
standard Pizza Express menu.
Lines of communication are open between Pizza Express and The Vegan
Society. Pizza Express have expressed a wish to apologise to enquirers
for the abnormal delay in responding owing to the high level of
response.
The stated national policy of Pizza Express is that vegan pizza can be
made in any branch to special order through the duty manager. This is
because their pizza bases, pan oil, tomato sauce and many 'extra'
toppings are free of animal products.
However The Vegan Society is aware of specific instances where customers
have been unable to get a vegan pizza made to order. We shall continue
to discuss this problem with Pizza Express.
The Vegan Society will continue to offer advice to Pizza Express about
the benefits to customers, themselves, animals and the planet of having
a good vegan pizza marked on their standard menu.

LE CRI DE LA CAROTTE
Vegan Music & Art Festival

http://lecridelacar otte.free. fr.

gare
autoroutière à Largentière / Axes routiers principaux : Montélimar,
Valence,
Alès / Aéroport : Nîmes.

Hi all,

There is less than a week left to get the early-bird discount on
accommodation for the next vegan gathering in beautiful Northumberland.

We all had a wonderful time this year and made many new friends. Next
year it's going to be bigger & better since we have booked the entire
site & are arranging a lot more trips, workshops etc.
You can book a luxury room from £50 for the week or a whole house to
share with friends.
The week is suitable for families since it's safe for the kids to play,
which was great this year since they all got on so well, but it's also
suitable for the full age range of singles amd adults because we have
houses with no children. This year we had a couple of party houses too.

http://www.vegne.co.uk/vegan-gathering/ is the website with all the
details but the discounted prices will withdrawn at the end of the week.
You can book your place with just a deposit & pay the rest over the
year.

If any of you want to help in any way, such as giving a talk or running
a workshop, please let us know.

Thanks

Mark

Green Fair comes to town

Redditch Standard - 12/6/09

RESIDENTS looking to live a greener life can pick up tips and advice during a fair in the town centre this weekend.

The Redditch Alliance of Greens (RAG) is hoping to encourage eco-friendly living at its Green Fair tomorrow (Saturday) and provide a wealth of information for those looking to change the way they live.

Taking place in and around St Stephen's Church, the fair will offer a range of green products, Fairtrade goods, organic produce and natural gifts as well as useful leaflets to help visitors live a cleaner, greener, more ethical and healthier life.

Kevin White of RAG said: "We all need to alter the way we live if planet earth is to survive and people need to take a long hard look at the way they live their life.

"There's a fair chance that pretty much everything you do effects our environment in some way - transport, energy, consumerism, food, leisure, waste etc all have an enormous impact on the planet.

"Adapting to living in harmony with the planet doesn't mean you have to change your life beyond recognitions, it's about making simple changes such as choosing a renewable energy supplier, cutting down on waste and buying eco-friendly products."

As well as around 30 stalls there will be children's activities, vegan food samples and the chance to take part in a drumming circle with Redditch based group Talking Drums.

Mr White added: "No matter how much you know about planet-friendly living, nobody knows it all and as always there'll be lots to learn, see and do at the fair.

"Now in its fourth year, the fair keeps getting bigger and better - its a fun day out and free so you can't wrong."

Groups involved in the event include Redditch Friends of the Earth, Redditch Trade Justice Network, Redditch Vegetarians and Vegans and Redditch Freecycle.

The fair will run from 10.30am until 3pm.

Subject: Worcester's 1st Vintage & Craft Fair

Dear All,

Apologies for the mass and in some cases unsolicited email!

I'm helping out a newly founded group in Worcester called
Worcestershire Arts and Vintage Events (WAVE) to organize their first
Vintage & Craft Fair on Friday 24 July, at the beautiful St Helen's
Church, Fish St (off the top of Worcester High St) 10am to
5pm. I shall also be selling my own handmade goodies there.

More details can be found on the Facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/event.php?eid=110147975405&ref=mf

And there is a new blog at www.worcestervintage.blogspot.com

As well as vintage and craft stall holders, there will be an old-
fashioned tea shop selling American-style cupcakes (including vegan
cupcakes and other vegan treats) and live acoustic music throughout
the day.

There are still stalls available for artists/crafters/makers,
collectives and vintage clothing sellers. If you or anyone you know
would like to attend as a stall holder, please get in touch with me or
direct to waveworcester@...

If you could circulate this info to any artists/crafters/vintage
sellers or vegan cake enthusiasts you think may be interested and
anyone else you know who might like to visit the fair that would be
very much appreciated and will help make the event a success.

We're trying to make a difference in Worcester and put on some
different and decent events so hoping to attract as much support as
possible from within and outside of Worcester.

Many thanks!

Jo

RVV have the task of serving refreshments and offering free food samples at the Redditch Green Fair this Saturday. These are 2 of the most important aspects of the event but as yet we have very few volunteers to help! We also need volunteers for leafletting, encouraging fair goers to fill in feedback forms etc.

If you can help, even if for just half an hour, please contact us or alternatively, simply turn up on Saturday and offer your time.

If you`re able to provide any vegan finger food for non-vegans to sample, please bring it along on the day or get in touch.

See the event website for more details. www.redditchgreenfair.org.uk

Best wishes,

RVV

Dear Vegan Society Supporter,

We want to show Pizza Express the benefits of putting good vegan main courses on their standard menu.  This will make it easier for people to become vegan by making it easier to eat out.  Items labelled vegan on standard menus will also raise awareness with the general public.
But we need you to be involved:  only you can prove to Pizza Express that there is real customer demand.
Please e-mail Pizza Express centrally on feedback@... with your thoughts.  Here is a template, but you will be far more effective if you can write a short, positive message in your own words.

Dear Pizza Express,

I am a potential Pizza Express customer.  I am vegan and I should buy from you if there were good vegan main courses clearly marked on your standard menu.
Vegans enjoy fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, peas, lentils, grains, mushrooms, herbs and spices and foods made from these such as cheese-free vegetable pizza and vegan chocolate cake.  Vegans do not eat anything taken from animals:  no meat (including poultry, fish and seafood), dairy, eggs, honey, etc.
I am pleased to that your pizza bases, tomato sauce and pan oil are already suitable for vegans and that you will make vegan pizza to a special order, but most of your potential customers will not know that, and most people are very uncomfortable about having to make a special order.
So please can you put a vegan, cheese-free pizza on your standard menu?  Or offer a pizza with mozzarella-style melting dairy-free vegan 'cheese', which is widely available, reasonably priced and has a shelf life of several months.  For further details please contact The Vegan Society: info@....
Please could you also offer a vegan salad dressing, such as a simple vinaigrette made from olive oil, vegan-suitable mustard and vegan-suitable vinegar?
Good vegan food is tasty, exciting and nutritious and so appeals to almost any customer.  This includes vegans, other vegetarians, healthy eaters, people following many religious diets and people seeking ethical and planet-friendly food.  Groups with just one vegan will also seek a place where they can enjoy a meal together.
If you need advice please contact Nigel Winter, the CEO of The Vegan Society (phone 0121 523 1730 or email info@...) who is a trained chef.
I should be grateful if you could let me know your thoughts on this.  I look forward to becoming your customer if you do offer good and clearly labelled vegan meals on your standard menu in the future.

Yours
(Your name)

Why not also contact your nearest Pizza Express restaurant to try to organize a vegan group meal?  Send the Vegan Catering for All' booklet to the chef at least a week in advance so they know all they need to cook good vegan dishes.
Thank you:  your active support is what makes The Vegan Society effective.

Yours sincerely,
Roz Raha, Head of Information

Hi
2 inspiring radio interviews with Graham Cole, Head Gardener at the
Holywell estate in Southampton, can now be heard at www.veganorganic.net
Click on the link at the top right to access them on VON's new Youtube
media channel.
You will see 'related links' videos put there by Youtube not VON and
some may well not be vegan-organic!
The big photo on the home page is Vonnie Roger Merenyi with some of his
vegan-organic produce. Roger was instrumental in setting up the
interviews. Thanks to Graham, Roger and all involved in getting these
interviews done and on the website. There are 2 more in the can and on
the way!
Please pass the word, ta.
Peter

Groups all set for fourth green fair

Redditch Advertiser 2/6/09

THE fourth annual Redditch Green Fair on Saturday, June 13 aims to be bigger and better than ever. With more than 20 stalls, entertainment, children’s fun activities, free vegan food samples and lots more.

The event is now firmly established as one of the best eco-events across the region and admission is free to everyone. The event will take place in and around St Stephen’s Church in the town centre, providing easy access for all.

The fair aims to promote sustainable, eco-friendly living by providing a range of green products, fairtrade goods, organic produce and natural gifts combined with lots of useful information to help everyone live a cleaner, greener, more ethical and healthier life.

As with last year’s event, the general public will be invited to join a “drumming circle†with Redditch-based group Talking Drums.

The Redditch Green Fair is made possible thanks to the combined efforts of volunteers from various local grassroots groups under the banner of the Redditch Alliance of Greens (RAG). Groups involved include Redditch Friends of the Earth, Redditch Trade Justice Network, Redditch Vegetarians & Vegans and Redditch Freecycle.

Kevin White of RAG said: “Planet earth is under attack. Not from terrorists or martians from outer space, but from you and me.

“We all need to alter the way we live if planet earth is to survive. Take a long hard look at the way you live your life."

“There’s a fair chance that pretty much everything you do effects our environment in some way. Transport, energy, consumerism, food, leisure, waste etc all have an enormous impact."

“No matter how much you know about planet-friendly living, nobody knows it all. As always, there’ll be lots to learn, see and do at the Redditch Green Fair."

“Now in it’s fourth year, the fair keeps getting bigger and better. It’s a fun day out and free, so you can’t go wrong.â€

For more details, visit www.redditchgreenfair.org.uk or call RAG on 458395.
