Forwarded from IVU web manager John Davis, with apologies to those of
you who've received it direct:

Those thinking of going to the next IVU World Veg Congress in
Jakarta/Bali next year may like to see some photos from the recent 4th
Asian Veg Congress,
Batam, Indonesia, at
www.ivu.org/asia-pacific/photos2009/batam/opening.html - follow the
links at the bottom of each page for more pages.

There were about 1,000 people at this one. It was very well organized,
good food, good speakers and a lot fun so next year should be even
bigger and better. The Indonesian Vegetarian Society has so many
volunteers that they have a completely different team working on the WVC
and even another group organizing the South East Asian Veg Congress, in
Medan, Indonesia, in March.

The 2010 WCC is at www.wvc2010.org and more details will be added soon
but any comments, questions and/or suggestions about any aspect of the
congress are welcome in the meantime.

--

After the Asian Congress three of us went the China Xiamen International
Vegetarian Food Fair, where we were speakers at the forum. This was a
huge event and IVU's first official visit to China after 101 years.

wlt_nl_9x9_spacer.gif
wlt_nl_9x9_spacer.gif

We urgently need your help to stop the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of animals next week during the Gadhimai Jatra festival in Bara, Nepal. Humane Society International is working with our local partners, Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre (KAT) and Animal Nepal, to prevent this reckless animal cruelty before the festival takes place November 24 & 25.

Every five years, hundreds of men are licensed to kill buffalo, pigs, chickens, rats, goats, and pigeons, receiving a fee for each animal they take. Cruelly, the animals are chased and hacked to death with knives in a competition to kill as many as possible within two days. According to Animal Welfare Network Nepal, the real beneficiaries are the festival organizers and business community, who drive up prices for animals in the lead up to the festival and then pressure local people to contribute livestock to the event.

Animal advocates are asking that the community provide fruits and vegetables instead of animals for the festival. KAT and Animal Nepal are organizing a counter-campaign of peaceful meditation, and together we are petitioning the government, which has reportedly paid for an enclosure to hold thousands of buffalo ahead of the event, to stop the slaughter. Please take action immediately by writing to Nepal's Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism to request a halt to this outdated tradition, considered barbaric by many local people who would like to stop it but feel helpless to do so.

Then, ask your friends and family to help, too. We need to let Nepalese leaders know that the world is watching and considers this bloody practice tragic and shameful.

Thank you for making a difference for animals.

Sincerely,
Andrew Rowan

xcelsiorofwh...

Forwarded from the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in
Space via the Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases:

NASA WILL IRRADIATE MONKEYS FOR MARS MISSIONS

NASA says it would take almost a year using conventional rockets to get
to Mars. By that time a human body would likely turn to jello due to
exposure to space radiation. But the space agency has come up with a
solution - in fact two of them.

First they want to build the nuclear rocket (Project Prometheus) which
NASA says would cut in half the amount of time it would take to get to
the red planet. With nuclear reactors for engines NASA also says they
could carry heavier payloads which would make it possible to "mine the
sky" for precious minerals.

The other solution to the space radiation problem seems to rely on
testing monkeys by exposing them to doses of radiation so NASA can
further study the effects on the human body.

The Guardian newspaper in the UK reports, "Eleanor Blakely, a
biophysicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, said: 'Obviously,
the closer we get to man, the better.'
"The researchers are to pay particular attention to the effects on the
monkeys’ central nervous systems and behaviour. The monkeys, previously
trained to perform a variety of tasks, will be tested to see how the
exposure affects their performance.
"The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) says that the
'cruel experiments' may involve 'restraint and other cruel procedures'.
"In a statement, they say: 'Monkeys, like other primates, are highly
intelligent, have strong family bonds, demonstrate empathy, and, most
importantly, suffer.'"
Not only the monkeys will suffer from this NASA boondoogle to journey to
Mars but the Department of Energy labs, that will be responsible for
building the nuclear rockets, has shown over the years a complete lack
of ability to control the deadly plutonium they will use to power the
nuclear space missions. The DoE's record of worker and environmental
contamination is more than shocking and they should not be trusted to
now ramp up the production of plutonium for the nuclearization of space.

NASA and the DoE have little regard for animal or human life when it
comes to moving nuclear power into space. The nuclear industry views
space as a new and vibrant market and they could care less the
consequences as long as profits can be extracted from space.

At the very time that climate change cries out for attention here on our
Mother Earth we should not be wasting scarce tax dollars on planning
expensive and ill-fated missions to Mars.

Forwarded from Vegan Campaigns:

Vegan Climate March Sat. 5 December London

http://veggieclimatemarch.50webs.com/

Be part of history in London! Be part of the biggest ever mobilization
of vegetarians and vegans on environmental grounds!! Veganism is the
solution to many of the catastrophes facing the planet & it's time to
tell the world!

* Demand that world leaders stop propping up the animal-farming
industries that cause climate change.

* Raise awareness amongst environmentalists and the general public that
their choice of diet is critical to the survival of the planet.

Assemble at midday for a rally at Speakers' Corner, Hyde Park, a short
distance from Grosvenor Square, from where the march is expected to set
off at 1.15pm.

Upto 50,000 environmentalists are expected to join the National Climate
March (also known as The Wave) on Sat. 5 December to "demand that our
government take urgent and radical action to deal with the climate
crisis". This will be the UK's biggest ever environmental march & is
aimed at putting maximum pressure on world leaders 2 days before the
start of the critical Copenhagen Climate Talks.

What to bring with you:

* Leaflets - All of the national groups that campaign on veggie/vegan
issues produce excellent leaflets that explain the environmental reasons
for adopting plant-based diets. Please contact The Vegan Society,
Viva!, The Vegetarian Society, Animal Aid etc., which may supply
leaflets for the cost of the postage.

* Photos from the National Climate March 2006

* Banners/placards - Use your imagination!  Look at veggie/vegan
websites for relevant quotes and ideas. The bigger, bolder and more
colourful your banners, the clearer your message will be.

* Costumes/props - Look at the photos from last year's event on the
Campaign against Climate Change website. Get together with friends,
decide on a theme and construct props & costumes that will really hammer
home your message. Once again, use your imagination.

* Your friends! - Please encourage all your veggie/vegan friends to join
you. The impact we have will be determined by how many of us there are,
so please do all you can to promote the event. The best thing about
this march is that it's not only a very effective way to raise
awareness, it will also be great fun!

Deforestation, spreading deserts, melting ice caps, flooding - livestock
farming causes all this and more

Veggies & vegans should be there in our thousands to demand that world
leaders recognise that a massive proportion of climate change is caused
by livestock farming and the production of meat/dairy products. World
leaders must stop supporting the animal farming/food production
industries responsible for this devastation and scale them down before
it's too late, or ultimately we'll all pay the price.
"The livestock sector accounts for 18% of global greenhouse gas
emissions - more than transport, which emits 13.5%" -
Livestock's Long Shadow - A report by the UN Food and Agriculture
Organization, Nov. 2006

Some of the environmental marchers will already be veggie/vegan but the
majority will not. The chances are that many of these people will be
unaware of the full extent to which animal agriculture is responsible
for climate change. This event represents a fantastic opportunity to
inform many thousands of environmentally conscious people of the
devastating impact that meat/dairy production has on the planet. The
world's media will be there, so there is a very real chance that our
message will be heard by millions more people.
Please join the march with banners/placards/leaflets etc. and urge the
marchers and general public alike to change their diet for the sake of
the planet, people and
animals!

Transport is available from across the UK, coordinated by FoE,
Transition Towns, CAFOD, the Co-op & other organizations. Special
trains have even been chartered to get as many people there as possible.
See the following links for details:
* www.stopclimatechaos.org/the-wave
* www.campaigncc.org/local.html
* www.co-operative.coop
* Stagecoach are supporting The Wave by offering seats for just 2 each
way plus a 50p booking fee! See www.megabus.com/uk.

My name is Todd Cecckin and I am studying sociology at Brock University,
St Catharine's, Ontario, Canada. As part of my course I have to design
an activism project to create public awareness and act as a link between
animal liberation and social justice.
My project is entitled 'How to identify and resolve problems when
attempting to set up an Animal Rights Group' and I should like to invite
you to participate in my study.
You will be asked to:
1) identify and describe any problems encountered by your group, and
2) say how you resolved these problems.
The goal of the study is to educate individuals on what may go wrong
when attempting to set up an animal-rights group. In addition I hope to
offer proven strategies to help resolve these problems. Your
contributions will help me achieve these goals.
If you are interested in participating in my study please let me know
before 1 December and I shall send you a formal letter of invitation
with a detailed account of the project and a consent form, which will
outline your rights as a participant.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Todd

Hi All,
Katie has asked me to forward this but as usual with suggested letters
the original is far too long. I believe that shorter letters that
contain only the main points and neither repetition nor poor grammar are
much more likely to be noted, so the one immediately below is what I've
just sent.

Dear Minister,
I am horrified that the Maranda Mining Company (Pty) Ltd has been
granted a permit to work in the SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary, which will
destroy this unique project.
I believe that due process was not followed to obtain this permit, that
there was no public consultation and that the company did not consult
the legal occupier of the land, the neighbours nor other interested
parties.
I am disappointed that your department has ignored repeated requests to
suspend the permit pending a full investigation but I trust that your
interest in justice will ensure that you look into this matter.
South Africa can be extremely proud of the SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary.
I know some of the people who've worked there and it is just the sort of
thing that would encourage me to visit your country.
I look forward to receiving your comments.
Best wishes,
Patricia

Hi guys,

I know, this probably ISN"T going to be the last time I ask you to help,
but it is genuinely desperate!
So much is going on in South Africa at the moment, as the eyes of the
world are watching due to the World Cup next year. An incredible
wildlife sanctuary, Sanwild, which I volunteered at two years ago
(rescues animals from the canned hunting industry, circuses, traps...you
name it, they've rescued it - including two male hippos rescued from a
barren concrete pen in a circus in France where they had a bucket of
water as their 'environment'... I've seen them with my own eyes, they
now live in harmony in huge lake at Sanwild).

A mining company has somehow (due to complicated and historical issues
raging throughout South Africa at the moment) been granted permission by
the courts to mine on the land of Sanwild. I helped them when I was
there to record how many endangered species are living on their land,
and believe me, there are a lot! The mining is absolutely disastrous for
the flor and fauna. There are elephants living there, for Goodness sake!
(Sorry, i'm passionate about this, as you can probably tell). What I'm
asking is for you to take 2 minutes to copy and paste the letter below
into an email and send it to the addresses provided. Please in addition,
mention somewhere that you are foreign and would only consider visiting
South Africa for its wildlife etc and that you would boycott visiting if
SA takes away all of that. Please help on this. Every voice counts!
Thank you (please sign your name at the bottom. Please also pass onto
your friends to do it!

DRAFT LETTER:

Dear Minister Susan Shabangu

We are appalled to hear that the SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary that is home
to more than 5000 rescued wild animals will be destroyed by open cast
mining by the Maranda Mining Company due to a permit was granted by the
Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) in South Africa to Maranda
Mining Company (Pty) Ltd to start mining in this protected wildlife
sanctuary.

Maranda Mining Company has repeatedly fooled the media and public by
claiming that they will only mine on 1.5 hectares, but as they have
already applied for and were given further prospecting rights it is our
opinion that should they be allowed to get away with their irregular and
dishonest actions now, it will be the beginning of the end of a unique
wildlife sanctuary and that their mining activities will eventually
destroy this unique project.

Mr. Michael Bryant the director of the Maranda Mining Company, an
extremely arrogant individual has threatened SanWild on numerous
occasions with further open cast mining operations over the entire 2600
hectares of Leydsdorp Townlands that forms part of the SanWild Wildlife
Sanctuary.

He has further actively be working to discredit SanWilds excellent work
and have attacked trustees personally and the legal permits SanWild has
obtained from the Department of Environmental Affairs on a number of
occasions claiming that SanWild operates illegally and has no legal
permits to run a wildlife rehabilitation centre and sanctuary. This is
simply not true!

He has claimed repeatedly that the Trust is not a bona-fide organization
and that some of the trustees are the sole beneficiaries of the trust.
All of these defamatory claims have arisen out of his bloodthirsty
quest for vengeance and to destroy SanWilds ability to operate and
raise funds. Not only does he want to extract minerals rights but in the
process he is actively working towards destroying a bona fide animal
welfare organization and the lives of many people that have found
security and jobs here. Surely this proves beyond doubt the evil
character of Marandas director and that he is up to no good?

We have been informed that due process was not followed to obtain this
permit to do open cast mining in the SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary that is
home to many endangered species of fauna and flora. We know that a
public consultation process was not followed and that Maranda Mining did
also not consult with the legal occupier of the land, the neighbors or
other interested and affected parties. This surely is unconstitutional?

The information contained in the Maranda Mining Companys EMP is
misleading and factually incorrect. Despite numerous transgressions of
this EMP your department has failed to investigate or act on the matter
despite numerous correspondences from SanWild asking you to immediately
act on the matter. You have the power to revoke any permit should any
transgressions of an approved EMP take place.

Repeated requests to the DME to review the process and merits on which
the permit was granted, has fallen on deaf ears now for more than a
year! This is truly shameful.

The fact that your department has ignored repeated requests by donors
and supporters as well as SanWild themselves to suspend the permit
pending a full investigation into the matter and until you can reach a
final decision, has been ignored. This is regrettable and shows a
disinterest from your department in the dilemma and possible financial
demise of a non-profit animal welfare organization.

Your departments inability or unwillingness to act has forced SanWild
to bring very expensive legal applications to try and compel your
department to react. Their most recent application has also called on
the court to review the permit as per the Public Administrative Justice
Act.

DME has chosen to NOT oppose SanWilds legal application, but has
decided repeatedly to renew Maranda's mining permit despite all the
lodged internal appeals, notifications of the transgression of the EMP
and various legal applications. It is such a shame, but it does seem
that someone is on the "take" here again. As supporters of SanWild we
simply can come to no other conclusion anymore.

Your regional manager in Polokwane should be investigated as a matter of
urgency and be laid off if necessary. Already a number of SanWild
employees have lost their jobs as a direct result of SanWilds legal
battle as there has simply not been sufficient funding to continue to
employ them.

We as the public, want answers and clarity regarding this case as it
will determine the environmental and constitutional rights of all South
Africans and will test the ability of the Department of Minerals and
Energy to follow due process and apply their minds and goodwill to the
protection and conservation of our wildlife and heritage in this
country!

We therefore appeal to you to investigate this fiasco and expose the
truth to the public in a fair and honest way.

I trust that your passion for justice will compel you to look into this
matter and to bring it to the attention of the public and challenge
those in authority to be held accountable. We trust that it will not be
necessary for us to donate further funding towards expensive legal
applications in which we firmly believe the truth will eventually be
told.

However should it become necessary we will stand by SanWild even if this
matter has to be driven to the highest court in South Africa where
SanWilds constitutional rights will be determined and justice will
prevail for the SanWild trustees that have done an exceptional job in
social upliftment, job creation, bio-diversity species protection and
animal welfare?

Please be assured that the worlds eyes are focused on a unique project
of which South Africa can be extremely proud. We look forward to your
urgent response.

Yours truly,

Forwarded from Shankar Narayan, whom some of you may remember from last
year's IVU conference in Dresden:

Dear Friend,
After the opening of Vegan Centre in India I was in Batam, Indonesia, to
attend the 4th Asian Vegetarian Congress (AVC) from 6 - 10 Nov. It was
well organized with a lot of public outreach and support. The next
(5th) Asian Vegetarian Congress will be in Hangzhou, China. in Oct.
2011.

With the success of the AVC in Batam we can expect much more from the
39th World Vegetarian Congress (WVC) from 1 - 9 Oct. 2010 in Jakarta and
Bali, Indonesia. On the way to Jakarta, you may plan a stop-over in
Dubai, UAE, for the First MidEast Veg Congress from 28 - 30 Sep., 2010
(dates to be confirmed).

The 13th International Vegan Festival will be in Turin, Italy, in 2011.
Meanwhile the IVU India, South & West Asia Regional Vegetarian Congress
will be on 13 & 14 Aug. 2010 (dates to be confirmed) in Bangalore,
India.

In addition to all these, the Indian Vegan Society has many events lined
up for 2010, the details of which will be out soon.

All these events are vegan and likely to help promote a kinder lifestyle
among the general public while the participants can expect some fun and
learning experience in the company of likeminded people.

Best wishes,
Shankar

Thanks to Vivien for drawing our attention to this.
Patricia

This is a repeat. I can't remember whether it was any good.

Rod Liddle examines our differing responses to related animal species
and tries to establish what those responses tell us not merely about the
animals but about ourselves.

Rod considers the otter and the mink - the one a playful, affectionate
emblem of British environmental awareness, the other invariably depicted
as a voracious invader.

Sir David Attenborough and ecologist Johnny Birks help Rod to separate
fact from fiction and understand why one member of the Mustelid family
should have us cooing and handing over money to environmental causes
while the other can expect loathing at best and, more often than not,
calls for a mass cull.

A keen amateur naturalist, Rod begins his debate with mink expert Johnny
Birks on the banks of the River Lugg in Herefordshire. Otters and mink
roam these banks side by side as uneasy neighbours. But the popular myth
that mink were part of the reason for the dramatic decline in otter
numbers in the 1950s was just that - a myth - albeit a convenient one.

He also hears from people involved in the Hebridean mink cull who are
acting to save indigenous bird species in the Western Isles.

As the debate matures, it appears that below the biodiversity arguments
lies a more fundamental clash between the pure Darwinists who believe
that nature should be left unchecked and those who say it is unrealistic
to abandon our position of power over the wild animals and their
habitats. It follows that we must make difficult choices about which
species we want to control and in some cases cull in order to protect
the many.

You can listen from here if you can't listen at the time:

Denmark is a big shame  The sea is stained in red and in the mean while its not because of the climate effects of nature.

??? ???????

It's because of the cruelty that the human beings (civilised human) kill hundreds of the famous and intelligent Calderon dolphins.

??? ???????

This happens every year in Feroe iland in Denmark. In this slaughter the main participants are young teens. WHY? To show that they are adults and mature.... BULLLLsh

??? ???????

In this big celebration, nothing is missing for the fun. Everyone is participating in one way or the other, killing or looking at the cruelty “supporting like a spectator”

??? ???????
Is it necessary to mention that the dolphin calderon, like all the other species of dolphins, it’s near instinction and they get near men to play and interact. In a way of PURE friendship
??? ???????

??? ???????

They don’t die instantly; they are cut 1, 2 or 3 times with thick hocks. And at that time the dolphins produce a grim extremely compatible with the cry of a new born child.

??? ???????

But he suffers and there’s no compassion till this sweet being slowly dies in its own blood

??? ???????

??? ???????
Its enough! We will send this mail until this email arrives in any association defending the animals, we won’t only read. That would make us accomplices, viewers.

???

 ???????

Take care of the world, it is your home!

Regent Street branch, Piccadilly Circus end
Thursday 19th, 6-7.30pm
Protest about McDonalds exploitation of animals, people and the
environment. Animal farming produces 18% of global greenhouse gases and
as McDonald's is the world largest user of beef they contribute
significantly to this total. The animals used in McDonalds burgers have
little choice in their brutal deaths. Help us educate the public that
they have a choice in what they consume and where they consume.

NEWS FROM THE VEGAN-ORGANIC NETWORK
NEW DATABASE FOR ANIMAL FREE AGRICULTURE - OVER 1700 REFERENCES

The Vegan-Organic Network, in collaboration with Vegatopia, are pleased
to announce a new database of over 1700 scholarly references related to
the science, practice and benefits of animal free agriculture:
http://www.vegatopia.org/bibliography.html

The database will be immensely useful for those with a research or
practitioner interest in animal free agriculture, including growers,
government, NGOs, academics and students. The database includes full
academic references for every entry. Most entries are also annotated
with summary notes and key quotations.

The database is the work of the late Dave of Darlington. Dave was a
vegan-organic grower in Durham who made a life work of studying the
benefits of animal free agriculture in relation to its implications for
world peace and ecology. As part of this, he compiled many references
and related information. Dave, a gentle, modest man died in May 2008.

Phil Sleigh of the Vegan-Organic Network kindly took over responsibility
for the database and has converted it into the Excel spreadsheet and
html versions available from the above link. For queries, comments or
corrections, contact Phil at von@...

For notes explaining the database fields and the abbreviations used, see
http://www.vegatopia.org/pdfs/dave%20of%20darlington%20database%20notes.pdf

Notes to Editor
(1) Founded in 1996, the Vegan-Organic Network is an ambitious charity
with an international network of active supporters. It aims to research
and promote vegan-organic (stockfree) methods of agriculture and
horticulture so that clean, green, cruelty-free, food becomes widely
available. It publishes a magazine Growing Green International and
advice leaflets. There is also a free advice service for members of the
public, home growers, smallholders and farmers. The Network organises
farm walks, allotment and garden visits and volunteer placements on
stockfree holdings. VONs stockfree organic standards inspected by the
Soil Association are available for farmers and growers who wish to grow
produce in the most ethical and environmentally-friendly way. The
stockfree organic symbol is the consumers guarantee of organic plus
food.

(2) Founded in 2008, Vegatopia is an online resource dedicated to
promoting ethical veganism through academic research and teaching and
through fostering collaboration between vegan activists, NGOs, academics
and others.

The Nucracker Christmas shop is selling stuffed toys - polar bears -
made out of fur (which they claim to be goats' hide). Please email
Nutcracker and ask them to take them off their shelves! E-mail address
and a sample letter below.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am appalled to learn that you stock real-fur items (toy polar bears).
Opinion polls conducted over the last 10 years have consistently shown
that more than 70% of people in the UK reject fur and only 4% own
anything made from fur.
Killing for fur commonly employs brutal methods, e,g. gassing,
neck-breaking and anal and genital electrocution, not because they are
the most humane but because they preserve the most profitable part of
the animal, the pelt.
I urge you to take real-fur items off your shelves and be listed as a
compassionate and ethical retailer so that I and others can shop at your
store with confidence.
I look forward to receiving your reply.
Yours faithfully,
