Dave here...just borrowing Noreen's e-mail to send this! I attach
information for you on Dr. William Dobelle and the Dobelle Eye Institute in
Portugal. Dobelle uses a visual cortex implant and connection to a set of
glasses to achieve the Artificial Vision System. This means that he
by-passes the eyes and attaches the system through the skull behind the ear
directly into the vision centre of the brain.

Many know of his work as it tends to be a bit sensationalist, for example he
got one of his patients to drive a car on a disused aircraft runway. We had
reports in the papers here saying that you could get the system implanted
for Euro 7000. I haven't seen peer reviews of his work although he is
reported to have had positive results with people who have lost their sight.
To the best of my knowledge he has not worked with RP patients, his patients
