Dear all,

Participants to the Retina Youth meeting in Helsinki next July are still
warmly awaited. There are some already registered, some have expressed their
interest, but we still prefer much more to come in order to carry out the
program accordingly

So, I kindly ask you to put the word around to the youth in your national RP
organisations. As you may remember the deadline for registrations is end of
March. Please see more details on the event at www.retina.fi/congress

I will start updating the status of participation on those pages under the
youth meeting announcements so that you will see how people are coming up.

Hope to meet you in Helsinki!

Best regards,
Pekka Rantanen

Dear all,

Sorry to have kept you waiting for this long. Now I have finalised the youth
meeting webpages of Retina Finland.

You will find them in the following URL

www.retina.fi/congress

The youth meeting section of the pages should be as final as possible. The RI
World Congress section still needs a little fine tuning. This URL will soon be
linked to our main Retina Finland pages.

So, as you see on the pages the registration for the youth meeting is now open.
The deadline is end of March so please inform the youth groups in your
countries. All the necessary information about registering can be found on those
pages.

If you have any questions or suggestions concerning the pages or the meeting
please contact me.

Welcome to Helsinki, a city with nature, water and bright summer nights!
Regards,
Pekka Rantanen
On behalf of Retina Finland

Hi Annmarie!
Thanks so much for your e-mail - sorry I took so long to get back to you
but we went to London for a few days. I'm delighted to hear that you're
enjoying a new job - it's great to be working in that kind of area where
you're actually making a difference to other peoples' lives I think.
I'm glad to hear that your kids are doing well also.
We have settled into our new home - it's a lot closer to the school for
Samantha and it's more accessible with buses and shops, etc. I'm still
working at the local University here - but would love a career change,
I've been doing a lot of work in the area of alternative therapies over
the past few years and I love it, it's very fulfilling. I've taken up a
few new hobbies as well - I'm still doing the water-skiing with Dave
during the Summer months, and I've taken up tai chi and hipdancing (I
never realised hipdancing was so difficult, but hopefully I'll get the
hang of it soon! :-) ).
We have a portugese au pair (Sara) living with us since last May and
she's great, Samantha adores her. Overall, life is treating us well and
we're all looking forward to Finland and the everlasting light :-)!!
I'm sorry to hear that you won't be in Finland, but yes, we will be at
the AGM in September and hopefully we'll see you there.
Take care Annmarie and keep in touch,
Love & light,
Noreen

Hi Noreen

Just thought I would take this opportunity to say Hi and bring you up to
date. Glad Samantha is doing well and hope you are settling into your
new home.

Hasn't the time flown since our trips to Greece and Poland. Glad you're
still keeping in touch with the European folks. I still receive and read
mail between you all.

Life has been good to me, I am still living in Strabane. I spent 3 years
on the Board of RNIB in London, I left the public library service to
work full time for RNIB in Derry and Belfast. I am Project Manage for
Employability and Skills for Blind and Partially sighted Women. We have
64 women on the project, six of whom have gone into full time employment
since our opening one year ago. I am passionate that women are given
every chance to achieve full potential especially in the world of work.

Andrea is at University in Belfast doing Information Technology and Tony
is doing GCSE's, he is 16. I'm not sure if you knew I got a guide dog
almost 2 years ago. Lark is a playful rascal but she gives me newfound
independance. I travel widely with her.

Kiki and I met earlier this year in Dublin. It was emotional after 7
years. We kept in touch meantime. She is doing well and looks fantastic.

Enjoy your trip to Finland and say hello to Pekka and anyone else from
the original group. Keep us posted on how things go for you. Maybe see
you in September at Fighting Blindness AGM.

Regards to Dave and Samantha

Hello everybody,
Please find below the information I have received from Maija from
Finland
about next RI congress.
Best regards,
Markus

Dear Friends,

The 15th Retina International World Congress will be held in Helsinki
next
summer. Here in Finland the preparations are advancing in their due
course
and presently we are starting to get to the final stage of the work. The
scientific program for the congress is ready. The invitations have been
sent
to the speakers.

The exact dates for the congress will be Friday, the 4th, and Saturday,
the
5th of July, 2008. The time of the year is the most luminous here in the
north and, therefore, often said to be "nightless".

We have chosen Finlandia Hall in the centre of Helsinki as the congress
venue. The building was designed by Alvar Aalto, a world-famous Finnish
architect, and has been the seat for several international congresses
and
meetings of world leaders. Finlandia Hall provides such occasions with
excellent technological conditions.

The official languages of the congress are Finnish and English. Thanks
to
the technology we have the opportunity of arranging simultaneous
interpretation in several languages. If a larger number of participants
are
coming from your society to Finland and you wish to get interpretation
in,
for instance, French, Italian or Japanese this will be technically
possible.
You can bring your own interpreter with you or we can find you one here
in
Helsinki. You will pay for all the costs of the interpreter and Retina
Finland will pay for the technical arrangements.

We have succeeded in negotiating good deals with two high class hotels,
the
Crowne Plaza and the Scandic Continental near Finlandia Hall. Staying in
these hotels will cost about 110 Euros per night in a double room. The
price
includes a very generous buffet breakfast. The walking distance to
Finlandia
Hall is 5 to 10 minutes. Opposite the hotels is the big Hesperia Park
where
the RI Running Club can go for their morning jog.

Besides these hotels we offer an even more affordable alternative at
Domus
Academica, a summer hotel, which is situated a bit further away. The
walking
distance to Finlandia Hall is about 20 to 30 minutes. A single room
costs 50
Euros and a double room 70 Euros per night. Rooms for three or four
persons
are also available. Domus Academica functions as a dormitory for
students in
winter. That's why there is no luxury in the rooms. Each room has a
toilet,
a shower, a fridge and a small kitchen. In the lounge there is
a TV-set and some computers. The hotel has a sauna and a small swimming
pool.

The social program for the congress days has been confirmed. The
Speakers'
Dinner will be held in Suomenlinna on Friday evening. Suomelinna is the
historical sea fortress on the islands just off the coast of Helsinki.
The
area was included in the UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1991.

On Saturday we end the congress in a festive way with a Gala Dinner
celebrating also the 30-year existence of Retina International.

According to the tradition the business meetings of Retina International
will take place in connection with the congress. We have built up the
program so that we can arrange alternative programs for those in the
party
who are not official delegates.

The days for the business meetings are:

Monday, June 30th, Retina International Management Committee Meeting
Tuesday, July 1st, Continuous Education
Wednesday, July 2nd, General Assembly

The Management Committee meeting on Monday will be held at a hotel. The
business meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday will take place at Iiris -
The
Service and Activity Centre for the Visually Impaired.

According to the feedback from earlier congresses we have dedicated the
whole Thursday for social activities. The participants have the

of getting familiar with Finnish nature. We will make a trip to a
national
park near Helsinki where we can canoe, hike and bathe in a sauna.

Hi Folks,

EDF recruits a part time project Administrative Coordinator (Deadline : 28
January 2008)

EDF is seeking a dynamic part time project Administrative Coordinator to our

Hi Annmarie,

Nice to hear about you and your current engagements . I have heard that you
are very advanced in Northern Ireland when it comes to services for the
disabled. Keep up the good work. Maybe we can learn about your success if
you send the DVD to our association, the address of which you can find on
www.retina.fi. I will then try and circulate it amongst those who might
benefit from it.

Great to hear you are keeping up the contact with Kiki. I hope you have

Hi to those who attended the Greek and Polish conferences.
Pekka, I will not be able to attend Helsinki 2008 but I wish you luck with your
plans.
Mike congratulations on your career success, you worked hard and deserve to do
well.
Kiki and I will meet next weekend for the first time in six years. The Irish
invitation is still open to the rest of you.

I want to let you know that I gave up my career in the public library service
last September, to work full-time for people with sight loss. I am Women's
Project Officer with RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind and Partially
Sighted People). Our project office is in Derry, NI, we offer confidence
building, IT training and career support to women in employment or looking for
work. There are 60 women involved, I am proud to say it is a model of
excellence. We have a DVD featuring 6 women from the project. I would be
delighted to hear from anyone interested in a copy of the DVD.

Our vision at RNIB is to make Northern Ireland the best place in the world for
blind and partially sighted people to live work and socialise. Our director is
very ambitious and we have a strong team of 60 staff to make this happen.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please keep in touch and best of
luck with your work.

Annmarie

   Hello everybody,
Please find below the information I have received from Maija from Finland
   about next RI congress.
   Best regards,
   Markus

   Dear Friends,

The 15th Retina International World Congress will be held in Helsinki next
summer. Here in Finland the preparations are advancing in their due course
and presently we are starting to get to the final stage of the work. The
scientific program for the congress is ready. The invitations have been sent
   to the speakers.

The exact dates for the congress will be Friday, the 4th, and Saturday, the
5th of July, 2008. The time of the year is the most luminous here in the
north and, therefore, often said to be "nightless".

We have chosen Finlandia Hall in the centre of Helsinki as the congress
venue. The building was designed by Alvar Aalto, a world-famous Finnish
architect, and has been the seat for several international congresses and
meetings of world leaders. Finlandia Hall provides such occasions with
   excellent technological conditions.

The official languages of the congress are Finnish and English. Thanks to
the technology we have the opportunity of arranging simultaneous
interpretation in several languages. If a larger number of participants are
coming from your society to Finland and you wish to get interpretation in,
for instance, French, Italian or Japanese this will be technically possible.
You can bring your own interpreter with you or we can find you one here in
Helsinki. You will pay for all the costs of the interpreter and Retina
Finland will pay for the technical arrangements.

We have succeeded in negotiating good deals with two high class hotels, the
Crowne Plaza and the Scandic Continental near Finlandia Hall. Staying in
these hotels will cost about 110 Euros per night in a double room. The price
includes a very generous buffet breakfast. The walking distance to Finlandia
Hall is 5 to 10 minutes. Opposite the hotels is the big Hesperia Park where
the RI Running Club can go for their morning jog.

Besides these hotels we offer an even more affordable alternative at Domus
Academica, a summer hotel, which is situated a bit further away. The walking
distance to Finlandia Hall is about 20 to 30 minutes. A single room costs 50
Euros and a double room 70 Euros per night. Rooms for three or four persons
are also available. Domus Academica functions as a dormitory for students in
winter. That's why there is no luxury in the rooms. Each room has a toilet,
a shower, a fridge and a small kitchen. In the lounge there is
a TV-set and some computers. The hotel has a sauna and a small swimming
   pool.

The social program for the congress days has been confirmed. The Speakers'

We have built up the
program so that we can arrange alternative programs for those in the party
   who are not official delegates.

The days for the business meetings are:

Monday, June 30th, Retina International Management Committee Meeting
   Tuesday, July 1st, Continuous Education
   Wednesday, July 2nd, General Assembly

The Management Committee meeting on Monday will be held at a hotel. The
business meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday will take place at Iiris - The
Service and Activity Centre for the Visually Impaired.

According to the feedback from earlier congresses we have dedicated the
whole Thursday for social activities. The participants have the opportunity
of getting familiar with Finnish nature. We will make a trip to a national
park near Helsinki where we can canoe, hike and bathe in a sauna.
Alternatively participants can get acquainted with the colourful history of
the sea fortress of Suomelinna. A partly separate program has been planned
for the Retina International Youth participants.

More information can be found on our website
   http://www.retina.fi/RI2008/congress.html.
In the beginning of December the First Announcement will be published on our
website. It will contain more detailed information both on the scientific
and the social program as well as on fees and ways of payment.

We are happy to answer any of your questions.

We Wish You All Welcome To Finland Next Summer!

Hello Friends,
Please find below an article about Vitamin A published in the latest Retina
E-News from Retina South Africa.
You should contact a specialist before taking vitamin A.
All the best,
Markus

VITAMIN A WARNING
Despite various articles in Retina news and other publications the
dangers of Vitamin A supplementation are still being ignored.
Supplements containing high doses of Vitamin A and Beta carotene
should not be taken by smokers due to an increased risk of
developing lung cancer and women contemplating pregnancy, where
foetal abnormalities may be the result.
In addition people with juvenile macular degenerations should not
take these supplements. In patients affected by Stargardt Dystrophy
and Cone rod Dystrophy caused by a mutation in the ABCA4 [ABCR]
gene the mutation may retard the retina’s ability to convert the
retinal form of Vitamin A back to the Retinol form. A resultant buildup
of Lipofuscin clogs the retina.
Professor Jacquie Greenberg co- principal investigator of the Retinal
Degeneration Project at the University of Cape Town cautions eye
care practitioners not to prescribe supplements containing high
doses of Vitamin A or Beta carotene to patients with juvenile forms of
macular degeneration. She cites the article by Dr Robert Koenekoop
in the journal of Ophthalmic Genetics. June 2003.
" Vitamin A supplementation is not recommended for ABCA4
mutation-positive patients because of a real danger that vitamin A
accumulation is the guilty party in this disease. In addition, careful
protection against the sun is strongly recommended. "
More recent research would seem to collaborate this and Retina
South Africa urges all their Juvenile MD members to avoid
supplements that contain high doses of Vitamin A and beta carotene.
We further advise all our members, irrespective of the type of
degeneration, to wear sunglasses with good UVa and UVb screening properties.

AEGEE's Summer University application is now open (deadline: 13 May)

AEGEE is a multidisciplinary student association, represented in 42
countries all over Europe and gathers 15.000 members in 241 chapters. AEGEE
strives for European integration and better understanding between the
different peoples from Europe.

The Summer University application is open; all members of AEGEE can hand in
their application from March 27 until May 13 via the official Summer
University web page www.aegee.org/su

The Summer University Project is the largest volunteer-based mobility
programme in Europe. It has influenced the lives of young people in Europe
for 20 years now involving more than 6000 persons each year from more than
40 European countries; from Portugal to Azerbaijan, and from Finland to
Malta.

The project aims at opening a new perspective to the participants over the
multicultural dimension of the European continent. With the events we would
like to promote the rich cultural heritage and foster mutual understanding
among different language communities all over Europe with a special focus on
young people.

Summer Universities are meant to promote cultural exchange, mutual
understanding, language skills (and their importance in personal
development) and active citizenship by removing national divisions,
overcoming prejudices and upholding a European feeling. The project has been
several times nominated as NGO example of Student Mobility across Europe.

A Summer University is usually a two-week event organised by an AEGEE local
and where about 20 to 60 students come together from all over Europe. Summer
Universities are organised by young volunteering people for young people.
The activities carried out during a Summer University range from academic
activities as classes to learn a foreign language, different courses on
technical themes to multicultural activities.

Please note that these Summer Universities are open to youth with
disability.

RETINA EUROPE YOUTH MEETING 2007

The Norwegian RP Association is the proud host of the Retina Europe
Youth (REY) meeting in 2007. The meeting will be held in Oslo 7–12th
August 2007.

THE PROGRAM:

The details of the program for this years meeting is still being
worked out, but some main subjects are ready. The meeting will
present the newest technical aids, news from the latest research,
psychological aspects of living with Retinitis Pigmentosa, and of
course lots of social activities.

The preliminary program can be found at the Norwegian RP-association
homepage (www.rpfn.no) and via <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RIY/>
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RIY/.
Please check for updates and further information.

WHO CAN ATTEND?

This is a REY meeting, but it is open to all countries. We have room
for about 45 people, which means that each country can send 2-3
people.

The delegates should be between the age of 18-30, be members of their
national organisation and at least one should have the mandate to
speak on behalf of his/her organization at the Annual General Meeting
of REY (to be held during the program).

WHAT DOES IT COST?

At the REY meeting in Stockholm in 2005 it was decided that the cost
for each person could not be more then 300 Euro. At this moment we
are budgeting with a cost of 275 Euro per person. We are working on
finding sponsors, and are applying for funds, and hope to lower to
cost as much as possible.

The 275 Euro will cover accommodation, meals (breakfast/lunch/dinner)
and transportation in Oslo.

WHERE CAN I REGISTER?

From the 15th January 2007 registration information will be available
on the Norwegian RP Association homepage (www.rpfn.no). An e-mail
address will also be provided for anyone with questions.

Hi Markus

Congrats on a great program for the 2007 meeting. Hope you are well. I wish
you health and happiness in the coming year.

Really glad to know you are still actively involved in matters RP. Just to
let you know that I have recently taken up a post as Project Officer with
the Royal National Institute of the Blind. I spent the last three years as
Chair of RNIB NI Committee and was on the Board of RNIB London for one year.
I am project officer for 'Employability and Skills for Women' which offers
Confidence Building, IT skills and Job Placement opportunities for blind and
partially sighted women. Our new office is in Derry and is funded in
partnership with European Social Fund.

I am always interested in hearing what members of the original REY group are
up to. So when you get a chance let me know how things are with you. Also
pass on my regards to Dieter if you ever see him.

I have since trainied with a guide dog - Lark, a black labrador and find her
a great aid to my independance.

Yourself and the others are always welcome to come and stay with me on the
border between NI and the Republic. Juat say the word.

Regards
Annmarie

RETINA EUROPE YOUTH MEETING 2007

The Norwegian RP Association is the proud host of the Retina Europe
Youth (REY) meeting in 2007. The meeting will be held in Oslo 7-12th

The preliminary program can be found at the Norwegian RP-association
homepage (www.rpfn.no) and via http://groups.
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RIY/> yahoo.com/group/RIY/.

WHEN CAN I REGISTER?

Registration is open from 15th January - 15th March 2007. Book early!
