Wikipedia's solution to this problem is to use a CAPCHA challenge on
the "Create Account" screen. Generally, that works.

Contrast with LARPA's MediaWiki, which at least seems to be plagued
by slightly less destructive spammers:
http://www.larpaweb.net/ (wiki link at top of page; I refuse to
dignify the linkspammers by linking directly to the page they're
polluting).
