Hello (first post),

Bought an Electra from Mackenzies in November & been looking for an
excuse to put some miles on it for a while. Went to rhe RE Owners
Club rally at Bellingham last weekend. Great fun with a smashing
bunch of lads. Some real characters there, & a couple of nice rides.

Anyway, whilst there I spoke to a chap with the same bike who had
suffered a total oil loss due to bunged up crank case breather
tubes, followed by a seisure & full engine re-build whilst still
inside the warranty. He had had an awful looking canister that fits
on top of the crank case fitted by Kawasaki in Newcastle in order to
cure the issue. Several others came up to me & pointed out the
fault with the breathers filling up with oil gunk & blowing oil out
of the air intake box, & hence over the back wheel. I have spoken
to Watsonian Squire & they say if I have no oil fouling inside the
air filter box I need not worry. However upon inspection there is
evidence of a little oil inside there, & a bit of gunk in the tube.
My bike is 3 years old, well outside the warranty & I don't fancy a
new engine!

I notice from the Enfield Australia site that there is a device
called the "Bunn Breather Kit" that is fitted as standard when the
machines are imported to that country in order to rectify the
problem. I note they are available for a reasonable cost (about £30)
over here & am considering fitting this unit. Does anyone have any
experience of these things fitted to the Electra? They at least
seem to re-route the breather pipes into the open where they can be
cleaned out easily.
