Facebooks Land Grab in the Face of a Downturn - BusinessWeek

Posted: 21 Nov 2008 05:30 AM CST

From the page: "Facebook executives think they can use the economic downturn to gain ground on the competition. So they're going to great lengths to keep user growth on track in these rough times. The company is gearing up for more acquisitions, hiring rapidly, and rolling out new advertising programs. Rather than trim the site's development costs, Facebook has engineers cooking up versions in languages such as Xhosa, Tagalog, and French Canadian to go after niche audiences around the world. "We're in this game not just for five or 10 years," says Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's chief operating officer. "We're in it for 20 to 30 years." "

Researchers tell EU that Blue Card is essential

Posted: 20 Nov 2008 06:49 AM CST

From the page: "The current economic crisis has increased the need for the European Union to attract skilled talent through initiatives such as the Blue Card, researchers told EU policymakers on 17 November 2008. The Blue Card, an EU-wide work and residence permit for third-country nationals, will be voted on by the European Parliament on 20 November 2008.

According to Erkki Ormala, Nokia's VP for technology and trade policy, said the Blue Card is an "essential element" for the recovery of Europe's R&D sector. Researchers have been fleeing Europe for destinations such as the United States and Australia, even before the current economic crisis."

Living Simply: The Ultimate Guide to Conquering Your Clutter | Zen Habits

Posted: 20 Nov 2008 01:16 AM CST

From the page: "Before you tackle your clutter, there are four basic steps to decluttering to keep in mind. Letâ€s take the example of decluttering a single drawer. These are the fundamental steps:

1. Collect. Take out everything and put it in a pile. Empty the entire drawer, and pile it all on a counter or a table. Take everything out, down to the last paper clip.
2. Choose. Pick out only the few things you love and use and that are important to you. Just sort through the pile, picking out the really essential stuff. Be very selective. Put the important stuff you pick out into a separate, smaller pile.
3. Eliminate. Toss the rest out. You know youâ€ll never need those manuals again. Donâ€t be sentimental with this step. Either throw everything into a big trash bag, or find a new home for some of the items if you think someone might have a use for them â€" donate them to charity or give them to a friend who would love them. And yes, you have to toss out all the chopsticks.
4. Organize. Put back the essential things, neatly, with space around things. Clean the drawer out first, of course, and put the very small pile of things you chose back in the drawer, grouping like things together and leaving space around the groups. Having space around things makes everything look neater and simpler."

HOW TO: Turn Your Photos, Videos and Tweets into Stories

Posted: 20 Nov 2008 01:12 AM CST

From the page: " *

StoryTlr, a project that enables you to create a simple event-based timeline of your photos, videos and tweets, has received several significant updates in the past few days, and suddenly - although the authors themselves insist that itâ€s a hobby project and not a â€oereal†startup - it feels like a full featured service with some very interesting usage possibilities.

StoryTlr is a slightly different take on the lifestream concept. Letâ€s say, for example, that you went on a vacation this past weekend. While you were there, you took some photos and videos, tweeted some tweets, sent some mails, changed your Facebook status a couple of times, and so forth. StoryTlr lets you take all this stuff and create a story in the form of a slideshow, which is a wonderfully nice way to see what happened in chronological order. Even better, after this past update, you can embed your story anywhere, for example your blog. You can see an example of one such story here.

I think that this concept will appeal to many users who are sick of being able to update dozens of services telling everyone what theyâ€re up to at any given time, but when they try to revisit their memories a couple weeks later, they simply canâ€t find them. StoryTlr is event-based; when something important happens to you, you can create an event and itâ€s listed on your StoryTlr page under the â€oestories†tab, which makes it easy to find (presuming, of course, that youâ€ll go easy on the stories and not create thousands of them).

StoryTlr also functions as a standard lifestreaming application. Under the â€oelifestream†tab on your StoryTlr page you can find a diary of your daily activities; if this is what youâ€re looking for, you can find it on many similar services like FriendFeed or Profilactic. StoryTlrâ€s strength, however, is in its event-oriented approach and the lifestreaming part is just sugar on top.

Other new features at StoryTlr are theme customization, which includes changing a themeâ€s colors or even the entire CSS; Facebook, StumbleUpon, Vimeo and Tumblr support, as well as full data import, which means that StoryTlr will try to fetch all the data from a particular service, like Twitter, if possible. Put it all together, and youâ€ve got a serious competitor to Tumblr and other lifestreaming applications; the simplicity of the idea behind it will probably win over many users who just want a quick, smart and easy way to share their stuff online.

Posted: 19 Nov 2008 01:08 AM CST

The other application someone suggested is www.nimbuzz.com which is similar to Talkonautâ„¢.

I did a test on my phone and application looks very fancy as compared to Talkonaut. It has skype link also which is an advantage. One drawback I found was if someone calls you then it is more likely to go to your voicemail in first two attempts. Then the caller get connected to you.

The web widget is a bit of a fancy. It works well ie. you will get messages on your phone. But who wants to be bothered all the time by visitors on the internet.

Share you comments on how you find both the application by commenting on the blog.

Video Chat within Web Browser: Now have it in your GMail - Online Inspirations

Posted: 18 Nov 2008 11:46 PM CST

From the page: "After a long wait, Google launched its video and audio chat facility within the web browser. Only requirement is that, you have to download and install the video chat gmail-videochatplug-in. Once you are done with installation, just restart your web browser to experience the video chat within your GMail inbox. The GMail video chat works well in all the prominent web browers like IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari and Chrome. You doesn't have to install any separate plug-in for each browser.

Well, the GMail video chat offers a high quality video and audio experience at free of cost. In fact, this facility would help to improve the productivity of most of the business activities. More over, its being a free service the cost incurred in video conferencing can also be reduced. I think Google launched the video chat in the right hour, where people are running for cost cutting approaches in their business. And another boon would be, ban lift of GMail in offices and work places, thus making GMail and its video chat unofficially an official medium for communication at work place."

Talkonautâ„¢ - VOIP apps for your mobile phone

Posted: 15 Nov 2008 10:57 PM CST

Last year, I wrote about use of Instant Messaging at the workplace and VOIP phones as to how they bring down the costs of communication. The popularity of the technology is more to do with comfort than anything else.

I have stopped fancying expensive mobile phones rather I look for how best I can use for communication and information while I am mobile. Yesterday, I was searching for an application which should marry VOIP and IM on my mobile, I found it Talkonautâ„¢.

Talkonautâ„¢ is mobile free calling, VoIP enabled, Google Talkâ„¢ like application for your mobile phone. Talkonaut is available for three different mobile platforms: Symbian S60, Windows Mobile 5/6 and J2ME with MIDP-2.0. Talkonaut works on more than 300 different mobile handsets.

Talkonautâ„¢ supports Jabber, Google Talk, ICQ, MSN, AIM and Yahoo networks both for chatting and voice calling.

The outstanding feature of Talkonaut is VoIP over GPRS capability which allows you to make free long distance and overseas calls utilizing your data connection such as GPRS, EDGE, 3G or WIFI.

figleaves.com UK

Pretty cool application, very easy to use and three minutes to install and configure. Make sure you have a unlimited internet connection on your mobile phone since you will communicating over internet.

I managed to call on google talk and results are pretty good. Download it on your mobile by visiting http://www.talkonaut.com/download.shtml .

You should also upgrade the mobile application for skype since now it allows you to call on a telephone number. Communication costs are coming down and you can call anywhere in the world.

Tell me how did like the application Talknaut by commenting on the post.

Limited Liability Partnership - What it is ?

Posted: 15 Nov 2008 08:24 AM CST

From the page: "With the growth of the Indian economy, the role played by its entrepreneurs as well as its technical and professional manpower has been acknowledged internationally. The traditional partnership of entrepreneurship, knowledge and risk capital combine to provide a further impetus to India's economic growth. However, a need has been felt for a new corporate form that would provide an alternative to this effect with unlimited personal liability on the other, in order to enable professional expertise and entrepreneurial initiative to combine, organize and operate in flexible, innovative and efficient manner.

The Ministry of Company Affairs has notified the concept paper on Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) inviting public comments. The main purpose of this Concept Paper is to create a basic framework, which will facilitate the creation of a new legal entity in India viz. the limited liability partnership ("LLP"). The essential feature of an LLP is that it combines the organisational flexibility and tax status of a partnership with limited liability for its partners. An LLP is a body corporate having perpetual succession and separate legal entity.

Proposal in India

In India, a concept paper on Limited Liability Partnership Law was brought out by the Ministry of Company Affairs in 2005. In the year 2006 the Limited Liability Partnership Bill was introduced in the Parliament. In October 2008, the said Ministry has proposed a new Limited Liability Partnership Bill 2008, which has been submitted to the Parliament for its approval."

Recently BBC uncovered in the report on Child Labour practices in India where suppliers of the clothes of high street retailer Primark had used child labour to finish the goods. Primark fired all the three firms involved. The question is about Ethics and Ethical values.

What is Ethics ?

Business ethics is the broadest of the three terms. It addresses the morality of both economic systems (e.g., the free market, socialism, communism) and the conduct of the organizations found within these systems (e.g., corporations in a free market system).

Corporate ethics may be viewed as a subset of business ethics. Corporate ethics focuses specifically on issues of morality associated with business enterprises. These include relations internal to the organization (e.g., treatment of employees, dealings with shareholders, questions concerning product quality and customer service, etc.) as well as external relations (e.g., interactions with government, specific communities, society as a whole, the impact of corporate activities on the natural environment, etc.).

Ethical dilemmas

An ethical dilemma is a situation that will often involve an apparent conflict between moral imperatives, in which to obey one would result in transgressing another.

Eg.

  • Trading with rogue governments can be seen as either contribution to the continuation of the regime or supporting economic growth that benefits all concerned
  • If a foreign subsidiary of a company is operating in a country where it is legal to employ child labour, should the company take advantage of it ?
  • Should you bribe to get your work done ? In some countries it is a common practice where it is referred as Suvidha or Baksheesh.

An article on on Santa Clara University explains " A Framework on Ethical Decision Making"

Recognize an Ethical Issue

1. Is there something wrong personally, interpersonally, or socially? Could the conflict, the situation, or the decision be damaging to people or to the community?

2. Does the issue go beyond legal or institutional concerns? What does it do to people, who have dignity, rights, and hopes for a better life together?

Get the Facts

3. What are the relevant facts of the case? What facts are unknown?

4. What individuals and groups have an important stake in the outcome? Do some have a greater stake because they have a special need or because we have special obligations to them?

5. What are the options for acting? Have all the relevant persons and groups been consulted? If you showed your list of options to someone you respect, what would that person say?

Evaluate Alternative Actions From Various Ethical Perspectives

6. Which option will produce the most good and do the least harm?

Utilitarian Approach: The ethical action is the one that will produce the greatest balance of benefits over harms.

7. Even if not everyone gets all they want, will everyone's rights and dignity still be respected?

Rights Approach: The ethical action is the one that most dutifully respects the rights of all affected.

8. Which option is fair to all stakeholders?

Fairness or Justice Approach: The ethical action is the one that treats people equally, or if unequally, that treats people proportionately and fairly.

9. Which option would help all participate more fully in the life we share as a family, community, society?

Common Good Approach: The ethical action is the one that contributes most to the achievement of a quality common life together.

10. Would you want to become the sort of person who acts this way (e.g., a person of courage or compassion)?

Virtue Approach: The ethical action is the one that embodies the habits and values of humans at their best.

Make a Decision and Test It

11. Considering all these perspectives, which of the options is the right or best thing to do?

12. If you told someone you respect why you chose this option, what would that person say? If you had to explain your decision on television, would you be comfortable doing so?

Act, Then Reflect on the Decision Later

13. Implement your decision. How did it turn out for all concerned? If you had it to do over again, what would you do differently?

If you as an Accountant are faced with Ethical dilemmas, apply the above principles. Further refer to your institute's code of ethics. If you are still in doubt, then consult your Institute or Association.

I would like to hear your views on this subject for further discussion. You are welcome to comment on this blog post.

Santosh Puthran

In October 2008, the said Ministry has proposed a new Limited Liability Partnership Bill 2008, which has been submitted to the Parliament for its approval.

United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom LLPs are governed by the Limited Liability Partnerships Act 2000 (in England and Wales) and the Limited Liability Partnerships Act (Northern Ireland) 2002 in Northern Ireland. A UK Limited Liability Partnership is a Corporate body - that is to say, it has a continuing legal existence independent of its Members, as compared to a Partnership which may (in England and Wales they do not) have a legal existence dependent upon its Membership.

A UK LLP's members have a collective ("Joint") responsibility, to the extent that they may agree in an "LLP agreement", but no individual ("several") responsibility for each other's actions. As with a limited company or a corporation Members in an LLP cannot, in the absence of fraud or wrongful trading, lose more than they invest.

Choosing name of the firm: The firm has to choose the name of the firm carefully since it would act as a brand and goodwill be created in the books. Read more.

United States

In the United States, each individual state has its own law governing their formation. Limited liability partnerships emerged in the early 1990s: while only two states allowed LLPs in 1992, over forty had adopted LLP statutes by the time LLPs were added to the Uniform Partnership Act in 1996.[7]

The limited liability partnership was formed in the aftermath of the collapse of real estate and energy prices in Texas in the 1980s. This collapse led to a large wave of bank and savings and loan failures. Because the amounts recoverable from the banks was small, efforts were made to recover assets from the lawyers and accountants that had advised the banks in the early-1980s. The reason was that partners in law and accounting firms were subject to the possibility of huge claims which would bankrupt them personally, and the first LLP laws were passed to shield innocent members of these partnerships from liability [8]

Although found in many business fields, the LLP is an especially popular form of organization among professionals, particularly lawyers, accountants and architects. In some U.S. states, namely California, New York, Oregon and Nevada, LLPs can only be formed for such professional uses. Formation of an LLP typically requires filing certificates with the county and state offices. Although specific rules vary from state to state, all states have passed variations of the Revised Uniform Partnership Act.

The liability of the partners varies from state to state. Section 306(c) of the Revised Uniform Partnership Act (1997)(RUPA) (a standard statute adopted by a majority of the states) grants LLPs a form of limited liability similar to that of a corporation.

Have Auditors failed us ?

Posted: 15 Oct 2008 03:18 PM CDT

Prem Sikka in Guardian discusses on Auditors fees for giving a clean chit to the companies whose survival is doubtful now.

"The deepening financial crisis brings daily news of corporate collapses and bailouts that plunder the taxpayers' pockets at an unprecedented scale. Innocent people are losing jobs, homes, pensions and investments. Each collapse shows that highly paid directors had little idea of the value of company assets, liabilities, income, costs, profits and financial health. This has been accompanied by one constant factor: the silence of the auditors. Auditors collected large amounts in fees and dished out clean bills of health."

The government of Iceland has taken control of Glitnir, the third largest bank in the country, and injected €600m. The bank's 2007 accounts received a clean bill of health (page 69) from PricewaterhouseCoopers with an assurance, "We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion". Auditors collected (page 93) ISK364m (£1.8m) in fees, including ISK218m in consultancy fees.

An old man lived alone in the country. He wanted to dig his potato garden but it was very hard work as the ground was hard. His only son Fred, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament.

Dear Fred,

I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won't be able to plant my potato garden this year. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here, all my troubles
would be over I know you would dig the plot for me.

Love,

Dad

A few days later he received a letter from his son.

Dear Dad,

For heaven's sake, don't dig up that garden! That's where I buried the BODIES!

Love,

Fred

At 4am the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left. That same day the old man received
another letter from his son.

Dear Dad,

Go ahead and plant the potatoes now. That's the best I could do under the circumstances.

Love,
Fred

Cost of buying information

Posted: 23 Sep 2008 04:21 PM CDT

In the Information Technology age, we have wide sources available for information that would help in decision making. A skilled user of internet will gather information free on internet and the lesser ones will seek advice from their friends or colleagues or buy information in the form of journals, magazines or library subscription.

What will you rely on when you make decisions in your company ?

Harvard Business School's Francesca Gino published a working paper, "Getting Advice from the Same Source but at a Different Cost: Do We Over weigh Information Just Because We Paid for It?"

Gino's results are based upon an experiment where subjects were asked to answer different sets of questions about American history and were provided the opportunity to receive free advice as well as costly advice—the same advice, as it turned out.

Gino's conclusion: When the advice is costly, subjects are more inclined to take it into consideration and use it. And that conclusion can have profound consequences for consumers, managers, and organizations in their decision making, she says.

Beyond Budgeting - A radical proposition

Posted: 16 Sep 2008 10:13 AM CDT

A radical proposition? - From The Beyond Budgeting Round Table (BBRT)

Budgeting, as most corporations practice it, should be abolished. That may sound like a radical proposition, but it is merely the final (and decisive) action in a long running battle to change organizations from centralized hierarchies to devolved networks. Most of the other building blocks are in place. Firms have invested huge sums in quality programs, IT networks, process reengineering, and a range of management tools including EVA, balanced scorecards, and activity accounting. But they are unable to establish the new order because the budget, and the command and control culture it supports, remains predominant.

10 reasons why budgets cause problems:
  • Budgets are time consuming and expensive.
  • Budgets provide poor value to users.
  • Budgets fail to focus on shareholder value.
  • Budgets are too rigid and prevent fast response.
  • Budgets protect rather than reduce costs.
  • Budgets stifle product and strategy innovation.
  • Budgets focus on sales targets rather than customer satisfaction.
  • Budgets are divorced from strategy.
  • Budgets reinforce a dependency culture.
  • Budgets lead to unethical behaviour.
There are twelve principles (two sets of six) that govern the Beyond Budgeting Model. One set relates to adaptive management processes and the other set relates to a devolved leadership.

Process Principles

The six principles of managing with adaptive processes are as follows:
  1. Goals - set aspirational relative goals for continuous improvement, don't negotiate fixed contracts
  2. Rewards - reward shared success based on relative performance, not on fixed targets
  3. Planning - make planning a continuous and inclusive process, not an annual event
  4. Controls - base controls on relative KPIs and performance trends, not on variances against plan
  5. Resources - make resources available as needed, not through annual budget allocations
  6. Coordination - coordinate interactions dynamically, not through annual planning cycles
The results of applying these principles include setting aspirational goals, reducing gaming, encouraging ambitious strategies and fast response, reducing waste, improving customer service, and promoting learning and ethical behaviour.

Leadership Principles

The evidence from our cases is that there are six principles that leaders should adopt:

  1. Outcomes - focus everyone on the outcomes, not on hierarchical realtionships
  2. Processes - organize as a lean network of accountatble teams, not as centralized functions
  3. Autonomy - give teams the freedom and capability to act, don't micro-manage them
  4. Responsibility - create a high responsibility culture at every level, not just at the centre
  5. Transparency - promote open information for self-management, don't restrict it hierarchically
  6. Governance - Adopt a few clear values, goals and boundaries, not detailed regulations
The effects of these principles include: a clear governance framework leads to the acceptance of local decision making by front-line teams throughout the organization; a high-performance climate leads to sustained competitive success; the freedom to decide fosters innovation and responsiveness; team-based responsibility results in a greater focus on creating value and reducing waste; customer accountability builds more commitment to satisfying customers profitably; and finally, an information culture based on openness and "one truth" promotes ethical behaviour.

SAS can assist with the implementation of these principles as follows:

  • Target setting - obtain information on competitor activity and link to external databases
  • Strategy - make the update and maintenance of objectives and targets an easy process
  • Growth and improvement - build hypotheses and scenarios and test against capabilities
  • Resource management - track the life time cost and value of resources
  • Coordination - search for and use cause and effect relationships across business units and processes
  • Cost management - identify areas of cost which need attention through analysis (eg. Activity Based Costing) and data mining
  • Forecasting - create and maintain rolling forecasts
  • Measurement and control - implement a balanced scorecard with leading and lagging indicators
  • Rewards - track actual performance against targets
  • Delegation - maintain personal information portals.

SAS is the only software supplier that is capable of collecting, transforming, modelling, analysing and supporting the complex information needs of organisations. Our flexible framework adapts technology to the management processes - not the other way around.

Google's Chrome - A new starter in the Internet browser market

Posted: 05 Sep 2008 01:45 PM CDT

Rumors were put to rest when the Google launched its new browser "Chrome". The beta version claims

"Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier."

Most of the products that google launches are in beta and they allow the public to test their products till they finally graduate. Gmail which was launched in 2004 is still at beta stage !!!

Source: www.gizmodo.com

The new starter Chrome is a new starter in the browser market which is largely dominated by Internet Explorer. Firefox is becoming a popular open source and has made a dent in the market. With "Enter the Chrome" will the browser users be split in three or one of the browser is going to die.

In my earlier post, "How does Firefox make money ?", I found that Firefox makes money from Google Search and other affiliate programs. So if there is shift by users to Chrome browser then it would ultimately affect funding of Firefox. This could jeopardize the development efforts of Firefox - an open source browser - since the competitor is google who has now its own browser.

Source: www.dailygalaxy.com

Firefox 3 had over 8 million download in a single day and it has set a world record. It would interesting to see whether google publishes the number of downloads of Chrome browser. This would be indication which way the wind would blow.

Personally I would prefer to use Firefox now and use Chrome for casual browsing. The download size of Chrome is 475kb as opposed to Firefox (7.8mb) and Opera (9 mb). So I am not sure whether it is a secured browser for transacting on the Internet.

Anyway, welcome aboard "New Starter - Chrome". Your induction in the market is welcomed.

Customer Loyalty cards

Posted: 01 Sep 2008 01:35 PM CDT

Year 1998: Our company was selling merchandise directly to the end customer. The customer were small corner shops who were buying worth £ 100 worth products in mix and match. Our finance director insisted that when recording the sales in the computer system, the sale should be recorded customer wise instead of lumping it under miscellaneous customer.

The volume of sales was small in comparison to overall sales, but our finance director insisted on getting customer on the database.

Year 2008: Now when I go to any supermarket or a petrol pump, I have got loyalty cards for each of them. I prefer to go to a particular supermarket, since I get loyalty points and rebate coupon. Buying from a particular pump, I earn "free air miles". Each time you checkout, you offer your loyalty card be swiped.

  • Has the shopping experience changed in last 10 years ?
  • Has the data gathering techniques about the customer preferences changed ?

According to article "The card up their sleeve" published in the Guardian, UK

Enter the loyalty scheme, beginning with the Tesco Clubcard introduced in 1995. One year later, Clubcard holders were spending 28% more at Tesco and 16% less in arch-rival Sainsbury's. The latter soon followed suit with its Reward card, launched the same year and with a membership of 10m by 1998. Safeway introduced its version, the ABC card, in 1995 - although this was ditched in 2000 - and Boots rolled out the Advantage card in 1997. Scores of other operators - Barclaycard, BP, Shell, WHSmith - developed similar schemes and then, in September 2002, Air Miles founder Keith Mills introduced the consortium concept that is the Nectar card. With heavyweight companies such as Sainsbury's, BP, Debenhams and Barclaycard among its members, the Nectar scheme was thrust upon us with the biggest advertising campaign since the National Lottery, costing a reported £50m. By February this year, Nectar had signed up 11m UK households (out of a total of 22m). Today, the Tesco Clubcard has 10m active households, while the Boots Advantage scheme, current favourite in the card-pack, claims 15m members.

Consider the detailed information that every loyalty card user volunteers to the store. Each swipe of the card sends your spend - what you bought, where and how you paid for it - into a databank profile of your purchase history, along with the personal information you gave when you signed up for the card.

Loyalty Cards: Reward or Threat? By Martin H. Bosworth makes an interesting point

Details of loyalty points and the point-gaining transactions are being captured by a stand-alone card terminal and transferred to a PC or a back-end server for further analysis. The loyalty software maintains a complete database of all customer rewards and reward suppliers.

And, just as data brokers like ChoicePoint collect personal data and use it to build an aggregate "profile" of individual consumers, supermarket chains use their stored data to target buyers with "special" offers and "preferred" advertisements from their marketing partners.

The problem that we faced as business for collecting data has been quite easily solved by technology - the loyalty cards program. So business not only gets the data about the customer but also gets information about the customer profile so that they can target the any business segment.

Companies analyze the data by data warehousing solutions and convert it to information. Slice and dice sales with product / product group / customer / customer group or region or any geography.

With the added information, the business can manage their supply chain better. The business that has information is the king.

Do you have loyalty cards ? What do think about it from a customer point of view ?

Santosh Puthran

Infosys to buy UK consultancy Axon in £407m deal

Posted: 28 Aug 2008 05:53 AM CDT

Infosys to buy UK consultancy Axon in £407m deal

The headline Infosys acquiring AxonGlobal came as a surprise to when I read the news on Timesonline. Indian companies are cash rich and they are taking over other companies in the world to improve the line of business and service offerings.

"Mr Gopalakrishnan of Infosys insisted that there was still strong demand for SAP systems, with Infosys registering a 62 per cent increase in orders in the past year. He added that the deal would allow Infosys to compete more effectively on the international stage with rivals such as Accenture, Oracle and Cap Gemini. Around half of Axon's revenue comes from the United States. "Our rationale was that with this acquisition, our global reach, scale and our ability to participate in large transformational deals would be significantly enhanced," he said. "

This is a good example of Porter's Five Forces Model for assessing Assessing the Balance of Power in a Business Situation. Buying one of the competitors means "Eliminating a threat ". This will further the business objective in an intense competitive environment.

Going back to origins of Axon Global:

Axon was set up by Mr Hunter in 1994 after he left his job with SAP to create a team of IT specialists. The company floated in 1999 and today generates more than £200 million a year from its base in Egham, Surrey. Its customer base includes Kraft Foods, BP and Microsoft, as well as public sector clients such as Transport for London and Wolverhampton City Council.

Now Mr. Hunter and his team will be richer by £ 407 million for the enterprising decision they took way back in 1994.

Every takeover brings about a cultural change in the acquired organisation. Scenario

Pre-acquisition:

  • Axon Global business is primarily SAP and the consultants (employees) would have enjoyed a growth in salaries with the growth in market.
  • Management takes decisions quickly since they are focussed in one line of business. Moreover the profitability were not much of concern since the projects were either less profitable or more profitable.

Post Acquisition

  • Infosys will be able to knock on the doors of their customers with Axon expertise on SAP solutions. This would generate more revenue overall
  • Infosys is a large organisation with many lines of business. So policy decision will be made taking into all the line of business into account.
  • The name Axon may disappear from the market place with SAP offerings will be one of the line of business.

I am not sure whether Axon employees will be benefited by the takeover since Infosys is quite conservative in salaries and but focusses more on benefits. Infosys has a socialist culture. So it would be interesting to watch how Infosys retains the Axon employees who were accustomed to get good salary rises every year.

Congratulation Mr. Hunter on the deal. You should have good holidays in Bahamas.

Regards,

Santosh Puthran

Sustainable Development

Posted: 25 Aug 2008 10:08 AM CDT

Sustainable development is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but in the indefinite future. The term was used by the Brundtland Commission which coined what has become the most often-quoted definition of sustainable development as development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

The field of sustainable development can be conceptually broken into three constituent parts:

  • environmental sustainability,
  • economic sustainability and
  • sociopolitical sustainability.

UK priorities

In terms of focusing our efforts, the UK has identified four priority areas for immediate action, shared across the UK, these are:

India's Initiative at glance

The Centre is thinking of eco-friendly ways to deal with the power shortage situation. It has come up with a plan to develop 60 cities as "Solar Cities". This will be achieved through energy-efficiency steps and power generation from renewable-energy installations.

The Indian National CDM Authority has accorded host country approval to 753 projects, facilitating investment of more than US$ 16 billion, in areas of energy efficiency, fuel switching, industrial processes, municipal solid waste and renewable energy and has the potential to generate 421 million CERs by 2012. India has registered the largest number of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in the world. The World Bank has said that the carbon trade market, which is set to grow from the present level of US$ 30 billion annually to US$ 100 billion, can prove to be another IT sector for India. CERs are set to rise by 75 per cent in 2008 and India accounts for 43 per cent of emission reductions. The carbon market size, which was US$ 62 billion in 2007, is likely to grow up to US$ 94–100 billion in 2008.

Green buildings are constructions in which resources like energy, water, and materials are used efficiently, through better design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal of waste, reducing negative impacts on human health and the environment.

Green fuel or Biofuel can be broadly defined as solid, liquid, or gas fuel consisting of, or derived from biological material, mostly plants. It is now emerging as an eco-friendly option as compared to fossil fuels. India will replace 10 per cent of its transport fuels with biofuels like ethanol and jatropha in the next 10 years to cut carbon emissions.

  • Tata Motors and space agency ISRO are likely to launch the prototype of the world's cleanest vehicle that will run on hydrogen and leave behind nothing more than a trail of water vapour, in 2008.
  • Bajaj Auto, Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra and Eicher Motors have come together to develop hydrogen-blended compressed natural gas (HCNG)-run vehicles.

Efforts for making farming more eco-friendly are on.

A team of biochemists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore, has discovered a new microorganism that can produce large quantities of a popular bio-insecticide to fight pests. The Kerala government will execute a broad organic vegetables farming programme targetted at making the State self-sufficient in vegetables production. The programme will be launched in 2008 and it envisages bringing in 5,000 hectares of land, extended over 1,000 villages, under vegetable cultivation.

CSR: From Awareness to Achievement

Over 80 per cent corporates in India are involved in corporate social responsibility, according to a detailed survey about CSR in India by Partners in Change, an agency set up by the NGO ActionAid. Out of the 536 companies surveyed, various categories of CSR undertaken included: health (66 per cent) followed by education (56 per cent), natural resource management 38 per cent, infrastructure development (per cent), community support (28 per cent), livelihood non-farm based development (20 per cent) and livelihood farm-based development (12 per cent).

Notable companies include Coca-Cola, Lenova, Cisco, ArcelorMittal, Intel and HCL.

UK initiatives explains how you can as an individual make a difference to your community.

Whether you are a resident's group, sports club, neighbourhood group, faith group or an other kind of community group, there are lots of practical actions you can take which will make a big difference locally, nationally and even globally. By working together it can be much easier and lots of fun too. Here are five ways any community group can make a big difference.

  1. Be a 'carbon free community' to help beat climate change.
  2. Make your community group a Fairtrade zone
  3. Recycle now - recycle together. The possibilities are endless!
  4. Be a 'buy local' group and help make local food work
  5. Be a 'cleaner, safer, greener' group

Reality Check: Did you contribute towards sustainable development to your neighbourhood or community ?

If yes, please share your experiences by commenting on this post.

CMA 2.0 - Portal Launched

Posted: 19 Aug 2008 09:43 AM CDT

I had been busy in the development of Portal http://cmaindia.informe.com which is dedicated to Management Accountants of India. In development of the portal, inputs have been provided by lot of members especially Deverajan, RV, Prabhakar, Ashutosh and Ramesh Joshi without which it would not have been a success.

The portal has general topic of discussion with members of public and dedicated area for Members of ICWAI. This platform gives an opportunity to every member to brand himself in the professional network. You will notice on every post the Educational Qualification, Website, IM details and when he/she become member of ICWAI. If a member does not have his own website, I have suggested, everyone to have their profile of linkedin. Linkedin on its own will open lot of opportunities by social networking.

Why Informe ?: The choice of portal is for the simple reason it supports Web 2.0 Technology

What is Web 2.0 ?

Tim O'Reilly contrast the topic on his blog on Web 1.0 with Web 2.0

Web 1.0 --> Web 2.0
DoubleClick --> Google AdSense
Ofoto --> Flickr
Akamai --> BitTorrent
mp3.com --> Napster
Britannica Online --> Wikipedia
personal websites --> blogging
evite --> upcoming.org and EVDB
domain name speculation --> search engine optimization
page views --> cost per click
screen scraping --> web services
publishing --> participation
content management systems --> wikis
directories (taxonomy) --> tagging ("folksonomy")
stickiness --> syndication

BBC NEWS | Business | Who is buying up Britain?

Posted: 08 Aug 2008 08:17 AM CDT

From the page: "The credit crunch may have put the brakes on the UK economy, but a fast-growing but relatively unknown financial institution may just come to the rescue - the sovereign wealth fund.

Typically owned and run by countries in the Middle and Far East, these funds have huge reserves of cash and they want to invest it.

In 2006, Liverpool football club was taken over by two American sports tycoons.

Fans hoped it would once again be able to challenge clubs like Chelsea, which has benefited hugely from wealthy foreign ownership, for the Premier League title. "

Kick Start your career with Linkedin

Posted: 08 Aug 2008 06:14 AM CDT

I read the article on the Computer Weekly "Execs use social networking to climb career ladder" by Rebacca Thompson.

A survey of 500 senior executives shows professional social networking sites are set to rival executive job boards as a way of finding new career opportunities.

Some 90% of respondents said they were registered on sites such as LinkedIn, compared with just 50% posting their CV on a job board.

This is quite true. You register your profile on linkedin and start networking with your colleagues. You make yourself visible to your network. Similarly you will instantly know about any change in the profile of your network.

Linkedin competes with Ryze, XING, Plaxo, Yahoo! Kickstart and, the social networking site Facebook, among others. However, LinkedIn is centred on helping its users to capitalise on their business contacts, and features searching capabilities that allow users to find jobs, contacts and answers to business queries.

I am fan of the job site monster since the quality of jobs as well as head-hunters are quite good. If you are looking for jobs outside your company then it would be a good idea to login to monster every day. You will notice head-hunters calling you up.

The other tip to move internally in your organisation is to check out resignations in your company. Just give a call to the line manager of the person who has resigned and ask him/her whether that role is available. The line manager will be pleased to take action quickly, if you are right person for the job.

So networking internally or externally helps.

The Power of Understanding and Solving Problems

Posted: 07 Aug 2008 11:37 AM CDT

From the page: "Many have made money and built reputations by solving problems. Doctors cure the suffering of illness, psychiatrists help heal the troubled mind, lawyers protect names from being tarnished, consultants offer marketing advice and a dazzling array of products help to remove any inconvenience you might possibly encounter in your daily life.

Many people are solving problems. Theyâ€re all offering solutions to people who need them. Some are giving them away for free. Others are selling them for a price. When problem and solution is a perfect fit, a relationship of trust is built between two parties. If this helps me now, it might help me again. If this solves my problem, it might solve my friendâ€s problem too."

How to identify Blind Spot in your career

Posted: 02 Aug 2008 06:46 PM CDT

According to Oxford Dictionary

Blind Spot is : 1. The point of entry of the optic nerve on the retina, insensitive to light. 2 an area where a person's view is obstructed.

I was reading an article on Road Safety - "Always Check your Blind Spot" on Ministry of Transport of Ontario Website and wondered whether we can apply the same principles to our career.

Principle 1: When driving, keep your eyes constantly moving, scanning the road ahead and to the side. Check your mirrors every five seconds or so. When using mirrors there is an area on each side of your vehicle where you cannot see. You may not see people or vehicles when they are in these spots.

You are doing the right things every day. You reach your workplace on time, work with your co-workers to get the things done and get good appraisals every year. You review the last year to plan for the new year and make improvements for the future. One day you get the news that one of your friends who was with you in your university days has got a promotion, then you start to wonder whether you are making the right moves in your career ?

You question

  • Are you moving in the right direction?
  • Did you check the blind spots which could have accelerated your career growth ?!!

Principle 2: Make sure you see other drivers and they can see you by doing the following:

You should know what you are doing and make sure others know that you are contributing to the growth of the company you are working for.

Principle 3: -> keep a clear view when driving. Do not put anything in your windows that will block your view.

Plan your career and outline the objectives you want to achieve in the next three years. Would you like to grow in your career vertically or get new industry experience ? Or are you looking for cross-functional experience or get better financially ? A clear view of your future will enable you to decide the next course of action.

Principle 4: -> the windows should not be coated with any material that keeps you from seeing out in any direction. Neither should the windshield or front door windows be coated to keep someone from seeing inside the vehicle.

Maintain a positive attitude and be proactive in your approach. Volunteer for activities even if it is a community activity in your organization. This approach is infectious. You will easily be recognized in a crowd and be perceived as an all rounder for a job. You will attract the right people who will help you propel your career.

Principle 5: -> check and adjust your mirrors and find your blind spots. Check your blind spots by turning your head to look over your shoulder before changing lanes, passing, turning or before opening your door when parked next to traffic.

You should always

  • seek opportunities to fine tune your oral, written and analytical skills
  • look at the senior people in your organization, how do they address complex issues? Learn from them.
  • develop inter-personal skills
  • be curious about technology that is relevant to your work
  • be professionally up-to-date

The above attributes will make you a sort-after commodity in the career market place, both internally in your organization and externally in the job market.

Principle 6: -> when making a lane change, check your mirrors for a space in traffic where you can enter safely. Check your blind spot by looking over your shoulder in the direction of the lane change. Signal when you want to move left or right. Check again to make sure the way is clear and steer gradually into the new lane, maintaining the same speed or gently increase it.

You should check the skills required for the job role that you are aspiring for in the next level. You should have demonstrated these skills in the day to day work and made a contribution to your organization. Every year you should get a feedback from your co-workers and manager to assess yourself. If you are dealing with customers, then a feedback from them would be vital since it would be impartial. Positive feedback will help steer you to the next level.

As you are moving up in your career, you have to be a mentor and provide a clear direction to people who work with you.

Promotion is not about pulling you up the ladder but pushing you up. It is all about people recognizing for what you are doing and what you truly deserve.

Regards,

Santosh Puthran

Pictures of Google's European Centre in Zurich

Posted: 31 Jul 2008 09:04 AM CDT

I got this a forward by email, I thought, I should share it with you.....

We already knew that working for Google had certain advantages, but, believe me, this giant of the search motor takes the welfare of its employees seriously ...

Visit to Google's European Centre in Zurich

as shown by this decompression (stress) capsule that is impermeable to sound and light ...

Moving around: A slide allows quick access from different floors ... There are also poles available ... they are similar to the ones used in fire stations.

Food: Employees can eat all they want from a vast choice of food and drink.

Work Station: Each employee has at least two large screens. There are 4-6 'Zooglers' per office.

INNOVATION: Large boards are available just about everywhere because "ideas don't always come when seated in the office" says one of Google's managers.

LEISURE: Pool tables, video games etc. are available in many areas.

Communication... On each floor, there are private cabin areas where employees can attend to personal affairs.

Technical Support: Problem with your computer ? No problem ... Bring it to this area where drinks are available while it is being fixed.

Health: Professional masseurs (eusses) available.

REST: This room provides massage chairs that you control ... while you view relaxing aquariums ... !!! Ambiance ... There are many books in this library ... even some about programming !!

I had been to SAP Office near Heathrow, UK and it is really fantastic. I believe that people who come to the building arrange their meetings around the lunch time .... food is excellent.

If you have a link your workplace, share it as a comment on the blog. Or share about the excellent workplaces in the world.

Regards,

Santosh Puthran

I beg to differ

Posted: 27 Jul 2008 01:24 PM CDT

According to Wikipedia

Communication is the process of transferring information from a sender to a receiver with the use of a medium in which the communicated information is understood by both sender and receiver. Communication requires that all parties understand a common language that is exchanged.

I participate in virtual discussion forums and some of the members communicate using following sentences (they are grammatically correct).

  • I beg to differ .... or I beg to disagree
  • If you have queries, please contact the undersigned
  • I hereby give my consent
  • The undersigned does not carry any intentions to hurt you at all
  • I beg you will consider the business well tonight and let me...

Source: ExtremeInstability

William Wordsworth's (1770 - 1850) poem "Daffodils" is a very popular poem and often taught in schools. Most of us must have studied during the school days. It has following paragraph

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed--and gazed--but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

The third line means happy. In today's communication, you will be in trouble if you use it.

The point that I would like to make is one cannot use old English in today's business communication as it may not be appropriate. The key is that your communication should be persuasive and should be to the point. (No ambiguity and without lawyer's language).

The communication should be in active voice.

Eg.

  • I am enclosing instead of ........ Please find enclosed
  • Please contact me instead of .... If you have queries, please contact the undersigned ....
  • I accept instead of ..... I hereby give my consent
  • I am sorry instead of .... I beg your pardon
  • Please apply .. instead of ....The interested may thereafter apply in a prescribed format with stamp and seal from appropriate authority. ..... The application form should have instructions how to fill it.

I have found few tips that should of interest to you.

Your comments please... I would be happy to read it on my blog.

Regards,

Santosh Puthran

Today, we celebrate 25 of these iconic figures - businessmen, technology entrepreneurs, even celebrities and athletes - by recalling the tales of their rise to glory. Donâ€t feel bad if your favorites arenâ€t on the list, this is just a glimpse of the many visionaries weâ€ve seen throughout history and there are countless others who also deserve attention. From the page: "Google just opened up Knol, its Wikipedia competitor, to the public after announcing a private beta of the service last December. Unlike Wikipedia, Knol puts a stronger emphasis on authorship and even encourages users to start different 'knols' for the same subject. Google is also serving up AdSense advertising on the site, whereas Wikipedia stays away from any advertising on its site."

Emerging role of Management Accountants in the New Economy

Posted: 24 Jul 2008 04:23 PM CDT

This is a guest post by Mr. V R Kedia B.com FICWA. He is a practising Cost & Management Accountant from Mumbai

Shape of the things to come

  • Effect of LPG – Liberalisation, Privatisation, and Globalisation – Global competition, Fittest will survive, sub – optimal units have to die.

  • Size, strong balance sheets and a history of achievements are no longer guarantees of continued success.

  • Global competition – strategic alliance networks and massive engineering efforts place new demand on all professionals.

  • Many of old hierarchies will be replaced by flat structures.

  • Every organisation is undergoing a process of internal churning.

  • Employees will be judged by their delivery of agreed output and level of services, not on spending 8 hours a day attending their place of work.

  • Financial information will be considered as only one portion of the balanced scorecard of measures used in organisational decision making.

  • Knowledge will replace physical and financial capital as an organisations primary resource.

  • Knowledge and application of knowledge will create competitive advantage.

  • People will have to be accustomed to work in permanent stage of emergency.

  • More empowerment at the individual level.

  • Adoption of team based organisation.

  • Internet is rapidly transitioning businesses into real time.

Source: Megapixel

Present role of Management Accountants – Conceptions & Misconceptions

  • Cost and Management accounting system had often become of little importance to managers. Many regarded them as minor routine belonging to the accountants, used to evaluate stocks and prepare monthly results speedily.

  • There are all the obvious things to do: Statutory and Financial accounting, Taxation compliance, Funding, Management reporting and so on. All of this tends to be in the background; it just has to happen in any event. Management Accountants have not yet progressed more towards bridging the gap between managers and accountants and they have yet to concern more with looking towards the future – at where business is going and what is going to happen.

  • Very few conceptual modifications have been brought in, in the cost and management accounting in the last 40 years.

  • Cost is too important to be left to the cost and management accountant.

Futuristic role of Management Accountants

  • Most of us will be doing the job, which we have never learnt and quite different from what we have been doing so far

  • The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.

  • We have to undergo the process of "Learning, Un-learning and re-learning" more frequently.

  • Industry will be requiring "learning" professional rather than "learned" professional.

  • Future will be "knowledge era". So obsolesce of knowledge will be very fast and more visible among accounting professionals.

  • Management Accountant must re-orient its capabilities, otherwise he will be overtaken by other professionals.

  • Management Accountant has to be futuristic instead of provider of historic or current information. He should ask "how better" and help management in decision-making level and for performance improvement.

  • 'Imagination is more important than knowledge'. – Albert Einstein.

  • The responsibility of the management accountant is less on forecasting the future and more on contributing to its creation.

  • Management Accountant will more often play the role of a catalyst / changing agent rather than an accountant.

  • Management accountant will have to be more adaptable to be a versatile professional rather than an accounting specialist.

  • Quality of "leadership" will be more in demand than that of a "manager" or an accountant.

  • Out –cost ascertainment, product costing and cost control. In –cost management, activity-costing etc.

  • Re-positioning of the management accountant – make it more relevant and useful to the organisation.

  • Management accountant to change the "Accountant" from their name to information manager/Cost manager.

  • Shift from "informational" role to an "influential" role.

  • To develop alliance with- finance, MIS/IT, industrial engineering, corporate planning.

  • To actively participate along with managers in decision making and strategy implementation.

  • Change in mind-set from product profitability to customer profitability analysis.

  • No more a scorer of the cricket match – but to be manager advisor to develop appropriate strategy to win the match.

  • Management accountant needs to lead the effort in training managers to use accounting information along with balancing it with other key data sources.

  • FOREX and Treasury function will be important profit centres.

Training needs

  • "If you want to remain employed, you have to remain employable" – Jack Welch, CEO-GE.

  • Dilemma for the management accountant will be to either change or cease to exist.

  • Management accountant must learn fast, forget even faster and focus on winning.

  • Management accountant requires very different skills from those that accountants needed to fill the narrow role that has been adopted by many finance professionals over the last three decades.

  • Continuing Professional Education (CPE) programme be made compulsory by the institute for skill upgradation and aquiring the latest technology.

  • Able to work well under pressure.

  • Development of multi-disciplinary skill.

  • Good communication skill – oral, written and presentation and a team player.

  • Ability and drive to work against strict deadlines and targets.

  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and a busy and dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to prioritise multiple urgent tasks.

  • Possessing good public relations skill.

  • Adding a new skill to executive skill-set, every few years.

  • To develop expertise in new 'Green Field' projects like-

    • Infrastructure sector (Energy, Transport etc.)

    • Information and Communication sector

    • Service sector

    • Agro based industries

Source: National Geographic

Changes in tools and techniques

  • Target costing v/s. Historical costing.

  • Life cycle costing.

  • Activity Based Costing (ABC) – ABM.

  • Total Cost Management (TCM)

  • Business Process Re-engineering (BPR)

  • Benchmarking.

  • Kaizen costing.

  • EVA / CVA

  • Total Quality Management / ISO.

  • Cycle time reduction (time compression).

  • Supply chain management (SCM).

  • Just in time (JIT).

  • Elimination of dysfunctional activities.

  • Out sourcing and co-sourcing activities.

  • Defect prevention v/s. fault rectification.

  • Zero Based budgeting.

  • Traditional budgeting v/s. New budgeting (comparative Table enclosed).

  • Full year budget exercise v/s reactive rolling forecast (computer generated budgets are obsolete the minute they are printed).

  • Dis-continuity of time cycle – month end and year end- and to invent information system to handle multiple time horizons simultaneously.

  • Radical change in IT/MIS e.g.

    • Integrated database that meet the total business requirements (like ERP Software).

    • MIS that is accessible and easy to use by all staff.

    • Rich supply of information in the form of a variety of report.

    • MIS for decision-making.

'It is never safe to look into the future with eyes of fear'. – E. H. Harriman.

'My interest is in the future, because I am going to spend the rest of my life there.' –

C. F. Kettering.

You should remain calm and relaxed on the SAP Certification Examination. The examination will be computer based and will consist of singe as well as multiple choice questions. I had finished my answers in first one and hour of the examination but stayed there to check my answers again. I revised lot of my answers particularly the multiple choice ones. So it is a good idea to stay in the examination hall for allotted hours. The moment your time is up, you get the results.

The key to pass SAP certification is to read the SAP training documentation, try out the exercises and revise. You will pass the certifications. Good Luck.

The answer to the question
