The Science and Art of Photography
Lecture at the Royal Institution, 21 Albemarle Street, London W1S 4BS
Monday 7 April
10.30am arrive for 10.45am start. Lecture ends at 12.00pm
This is a unique opportunity for students aged 13+ (Key stages 3 and 4,
plus early A-level) to come to the Royal Institution, London for an
inspiring lecture which combines science and the visual art of photography.
Students will have the chance to learn about the science behind
photography, the history and workings of cameras and current forms of
science imagery, including scanning electron microscopes, x-ray and other
special photographic techniques. Students are being offered improved
learning and increased understanding of science (physics, chemistry and
biology) through photography.
Speakers:
Tim Hunkin TV presenter, cartoonist and engineer by training, Tim
Hunkin currently lectures and works for museums, building and creating
exhibitions. Using a camera made of an old suitcase, Tim will demonstrate
the basic principles of cameras and photographic chemistry. Adam Goff
Picture Editor of New Scientist, a keen photographer and judge of Visions
of Science
This lecture is organised by Novartis as part of its ongoing support for
science in the UK and it is sponsored by NESTA's (the National Endowment
for Science Technology and the Arts) Education Programme which aims to
pioneer new educational approaches. The lecture is supported by the
Association for Science Education and the Royal Institution.
