Dear Colleagues

A call for contributions

The December 2002 issue of SSR (84, 307) will focus on the impact of
science education research on the practice of science teaching. The issue
will contain articles by teachers and lecturers in the UK that both report
on the products and value of doing research into science education, and
also discuss practical and professional issues to do with science
education research.

I am soliciting short contributions that begin with stem, "A piece of
research that influenced me was ..."

These contributions would be dotted around the issue as reflections by
teachers and others about the value of reading about or doing research.
An example is below.

==== A piece of research that influenced me was Davies' and Greene?s (1984)
research and development on reading and using text in school science. This
book was a revelation in the structure of science texts and categories of
types of reading tasks when I was working as a head of science. Before
this book I hadn?t really thought about reading; I had just asked pupils to
read and make notes or copy or learn. This book with its pupils'
activities of cloze, DARTS, text analysis, text
reconstruction and so on suddenly made reading a much more worthwhile and
effective activity. All this stuff seemed to fade away and though we
carried on teaching it to trainees there didn?t seem to be much use of it
in schools by the mid-1990s. I am glad to see that it is making a
comeback in the current literacy strategy (Heselden and Staples 2002)
