The UK Magnetics Society
16th Ewing Lecture
Let Magnetism Attract You!
Presented by Professor Philip Beckley with supporting cast
at
The Royal Institution of Great Britain, London
5 December 2002
[from 5pm: registration/tea; 6-7pm: Lecture]
This year The UK Magnetics Society annual Ewing Lecture will change from its
normal format and will take the form of an informative and interesting
magnetics drama. The UK currently has a challenge in capturing the interest
of the rising generation in terms of the interest, excitement and perception
of science and engineering. The Society's contribution to addressing this
challenge includes the modification of this year's annual 'learned lecture'
- to take the form of a drama in which the pursuit of science is shown in
its true colours of intellectual challenge and interest.
The 16th Ewing Lecture will be held at the prestigious Royal Institution of
Great Britain, London - founded in 1799 and the oldest independent research
body in the world. Physics student, Emma, is struggling with her course
and the concepts of science and engineering. However, help is at hand when
her magnetician grandfather reveals the secrets within electromagnetism with
a wide range of live and stimulating and challenging demonstrations. The
Lecture is intended to interest all parties from 6th form and university
students, as well as scientists, engineers, teachers and lecturers.
Students will be invited to attend free of charge.
Professor Beckley is well known for the style of his lectures and
demonstrations which are informative, thought-provoking and entertaining.
The drama will be played out in the beautiful and historic Faraday Lecture
Theatre, which is the renowned setting for the BBC Television Christmas
Lectures - and the very lecture theatre where Michael Faraday spoke so
often! It will be possible to view the historical features of scientific
interest the the Royal Institution, including the Faraday Museum housing
Michael Faraday's original apparatus which includes the world's first
electric transformer. The evening will feature a competition and a
comprehensive hand-out pack will be provided including a range of literature
from sponsors and items of magnetic hardware.
This event will provide an ideal opportunity both before the Lecture and
afterwards, for attendees to mingle and discuss career choices and
employment opportunities. Appropriate employers can take advantage of this
occasion to meet and capture the interest of undergraduate and postgraduate
students and promote the magnetics community.
