VISIT THE ROYAL SOCIETY'S SUMMER SCIENCE EXHIBITION - TUESDAY 1 JULY TO
THURSDAY 3 JULY 20003

This annual exhibition offers a fantastic opportunity to discover the best
of the UK's science and technology research. But what makes this event
unique is the chance visitors get to meet and talk to the researchers
themselves who are behind the work on show. The exhibition is a great
opportunity for post-16 students to find out what is happening at the
forefront of the science subjects they are studying. Chemistry, Biology,
and Physics are all represented in the work of the research teams.

Among the 20 exhibits on show, will be;
Detecting lung cancer - Professor Miles Padgett and his team from the
University of Glasgow will reveal how optical technology can be used to
diagnose lung cancer and prospect for oil or gas.
'Sting Jet' - Professor Keith Browning and his team from the University of
Reading will be describing a new phenomenon which creates severe surface
winds and causes over a billion Euros of damage annually in Europe.
Guppy love - Professor Anne Magurran and her team at the University of St
Andrews will explain how Trinidadian guppies are giving insights into how
new species may be formed.

THE EXHIBITION ONLINE
The 2002 exhibition is online at www.sc1.ac.uk - a science website created
for 16-19 year olds. So if you cannot bring students to this year's
exhibition, you can still experience what is on offer when this year's
exhibition goes online in July.

RESOURCES FOR THE EXHIBITION
We produce free, high-quality resources to accompany the exhibition enabling
you and your students to undertake preparatory work, and follow up anything
that has interested you at the exhibition. For those groups who register we
will be sending copies of the Exhibition Guide plus a Teacher's resource one
month before your visit.

HOW TO REGISTER?
If you would like to come along to the Summer Science Exhibition 2003,
please complete the registration form at www.royalsoc.ac.uk/education by
Friday 2 May. There is no charge to attend the exhibition, but please
respond as quickly as you can as we conduct registration on a first-come,
first-served basis.

If you have any questions please get in touch.
