Faculty of Education Seminar Series
Meeting the needs of the most able in science (**)

Easter Term Seminar: Saturday 10th May
The role of questions in challenging science learners

Prof. Mike Watts, University of Surrey Roehampton

The meeting starts at 11.00, in the Science Block, Faculty Homerton Site (***)
Registration (informal - please sign in) from 10.30. Tea and coffee
have been ordered for 10.30.

Mike Watts (*) will give his presentation before lunch. He will talk about
research looking at how pupils/students can be encouraged to generate
questions as part of inquiry-based learning approaches. This work looks at
raising learners' skill levels in critical questioning (and so in critical
thinking). He will discuss research data from learners at KS2, KS3 and
undergraduate levels.

Lunch (c.12.30) may be bought in the buttery if required. You are welcome
to bring a packed lunch to eat in the College grounds.

After lunch there will be opportunities for considering how the ideas
in Mike's presentation may be useful for colleagues exploring how to
challenge pupils in their classes. There will also be time for
colleagues who have to report back on their work in schools using
ideas from the previous seminar.

Keith

* Professor Mike Watts (University of Surrey Roehampton) is Academic Dean
of the Schools of Education, the Roehampton Federal Professor and Professor
of Science Education.

Are you a Science teacher fully conversant with the National Curriculum KS3
PoS? Are you familiar with the types of questions that appear in the
National Tests in Science? Do you think that there are areas of the
curriculum that have not been particularly well tested? Could you see
yourself contributing to a brainstorming session to discuss novel contexts
for questions? Could you discuss and develop new ideas for testing difficult
areas of the curriculum? Do you have a flair for question writing? Could you
write questions based on familiar classroom experiments?

If the answer to these questions is 'yes' and you are available in either
the Easter or the Summer holiday, I would be very interested to hear from
you.

The University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate is intending to
organise a writers' workshop to bring together experienced teachers of KS3
Science to contribute to the development of future questions for the
National tests. The workshop will be held one day in Cambridge and will
provide an opportunity to bounce ideas off colleagues with a view to writing
new test questions and to explore new ways of testing areas of the PoS.

What's in it for you?
- the opportunity to discuss your ideas
- a chance to influence future tests
- a tasty lunch
- a fee of £120
- reasonable travel expenses reimbursed

If you are interested, or know of interested colleagues of any Science
discipline, please could you reply to wallington.r@...
with KS3 Science Writers' Workshop in the subject line.

Many thanks.

The Royal Society of Chemistry have a site www.chemit.co.uk that collects
together the work of their teacher fellow.

There are a number of really useful powerpoint presentations available
there, many of which have some physics like, eg solids, liquids, gases
etc...

Perhaps there should be a physics one too (sorry Daniel...)

Dear All,
Here is an opportunity for older pupils and staff.
All replies to Emma, not the list please.
Best wishes,
Chris

Do you know someone who loves science? Would they be able to express their
thoughts on the subject in an imaginative and creative way? If so, tell
them to enter The Daily Telegraph BASF Science Writer Awards, and give them
the chance to help bridge the gap between the public's perception of
scientists and the world of science itself. You could win a trip to the USA
and share in cash and prizes worth over £7,000!

The Awards are now in their 16th year, and are open to two age categories,
16-19 and 20-28 year olds. To enter the competition the entrant must write
an article on any scientific or science-related subject, no longer than 700
words, that will have a chance of being published in The Daily Telegraph
weekly Science page and online in the Award Winner's section of our
website, at www.science-writer.co.uk. The closing date for the competition
is 25 April, 2003.

This year, the first prize-winners have a share of cash and prizes worth
over £7,000! Including an all expenses paid, weeklong trip to Seattle, USA
to attend the American Association for the Advancement of Science's 2004
meeting. The winners will also be able to meet Britain's most
distinguished scientists at the British Association's Festival of Science
at the University of Salford. There is also a £500 prize for the school
that submits the most entries that reach the finalist stage, and NEW to
this year, a £200 book voucher will be awarded for the teacher who submits
the most pupils that reach the short-list after the initial stage of the
competition.

Further information can be found on the competition website,
www.science-writer.co.uk, or by calling the hotline on 020 7704 5315 or by
emailing enquiries@...

Apologies if everyone knows this trick...

Go to Google, select "Advanced Search":
http://www.google.co.uk/advanced_search?hl=en

Enter your search terms (eg "Capacitors") and then select file format
PowerPoint.

Et voila... one PowerPoint bank.

Quality varies wildly!

If you find one you like then an e-mail back to the author seems
appropriate.

VISIT THE ROYAL SOCIETY'S SUMMER SCIENCE EXHIBITION - TUESDAY 1 JULY TO
THURSDAY 3 JULY 20003

This annual exhibition offers a fantastic opportunity to discover the best
of the UK's science and technology research. But what makes this event
unique is the chance visitors get to meet and talk to the researchers
themselves who are behind the work on show. The exhibition is a great
opportunity for post-16 students to find out what is happening at the
forefront of the science subjects they are studying. Chemistry, Biology,
and Physics are all represented in the work of the research teams.

Among the 20 exhibits on show, will be;
Detecting lung cancer - Professor Miles Padgett and his team from the
University of Glasgow will reveal how optical technology can be used to
diagnose lung cancer and prospect for oil or gas.
'Sting Jet' - Professor Keith Browning and his team from the University of
Reading will be describing a new phenomenon which creates severe surface
winds and causes over a billion Euros of damage annually in Europe.
Guppy love - Professor Anne Magurran and her team at the University of St
Andrews will explain how Trinidadian guppies are giving insights into how
new species may be formed.

THE EXHIBITION ONLINE
The 2002 exhibition is online at www.sc1.ac.uk - a science website created
for 16-19 year olds. So if you cannot bring students to this year's
exhibition, you can still experience what is on offer when this year's
exhibition goes online in July.

RESOURCES FOR THE EXHIBITION
We produce free, high-quality resources to accompany the exhibition enabling
you and your students to undertake preparatory work, and follow up anything
that has interested you at the exhibition. For those groups who register we
will be sending copies of the Exhibition Guide plus a Teacher's resource one
month before your visit.

HOW TO REGISTER?
If you would like to come along to the Summer Science Exhibition 2003,
please complete the registration form at www.royalsoc.ac.uk/education by
Friday 2 May. There is no charge to attend the exhibition, but please
respond as quickly as you can as we conduct registration on a first-come,
first-served basis.

If you have any questions please get in touch.
