Sorry folks, I deleted the file as we had had a communication breakdown
among the Elders.

Due to Fee's delayed recovery following surgery Jay hadn't confirmed
the dates etc with Derek, as I thought he had. Derek missed the
meeting when we went through all the details, as he was working and
obviously he needs to approve future plans before we publish them as
definite.

As soon as I get the OK from him I'll put the info. back up and let you
all know.

For all who aren't in touch with her on Facebook, Fee overdid it after
surgery (surprise, surprise) and gave us all a fright. She is now well
on the way to recovery!

My apologies again for not posting to let you know what I'd done (I
meant to but life got in the way :( )

Hellooooo dear friends!!

Wowzer!!  Conor is growing fast isnt he? It wasnt that long ago that he was a tiny wee thing in our arms, and we were all bleary eyed over him in Kits camper van...awwww, lol

Marcus and me are still all loved up and wanting to start a family...dont know if carol is still doing bets on how long it takes us, but we were gonna whip this coil out in April, but now we are thinking of doing it in New Zealand, in a months time...arrrrgh!!!...then who knows eh!!  lol.  Then the bets are on...im sure i will ask my dear friends for some long distance fertility magic, seeing as im knocking on a bit, and this is my last chance to have a baby....!!!

We are very well, have the occasional bout of travellers ailments and of course the occasional bug bite, but nothing too serious...nothing like the salmonella poisoning i had in La Paz...typical eh, serves me right for eating an old dodgy pigs trotter in a not so nice place....probably still had shit on its feet...OINK OINK!!  lol!

Well, connection is a bit crappy, so I will type and save to a word doc until the server comes back on.  It is much better than it has been in the Brazil, but now we are in Asuncion, in Paraguay, and this cafe is a bit of alright.

We were in Bolivia last week, having spent the last week chilling out, getting very stoned, eating great steaks and watching excellent movies with friends, all part of recovering from a month or so in the Amazonian jungle, both in Bolivia and Brazil…its feckin big ya know!  Lol.

So...seeing as you emailed me first, you get the blog first!  lol....its always a mammoth task doing a blog...we move so fast and visit cyber cafes so rarely..there is always a mountain of info to regurgitate!  We miss loads out, hopefully i will do a proper blog one day...sigh...one day!!!  lol.

We sent Carol an email from Manaus, the capital of Amazonas, the Hong Kong of the Jungle, which was incredibly hot and sweaty, but very beautiful.  We even went to the famous Opera House and watched the Philharmonic Orchestra on our last night.  Then we braved another cargo boat journey up the Amazon, this time taking the Rio Negro right to the Columbian/ Venezuelan borders.  This one didn’t sink this time…but on two nights we hit a rock under the water (there are lots of rapids to dodge) and people jumped out of their hammocks, panicking and grabbing life jackets…as usual there were not enough to go around.  But…all was fine, we were getting to be experts at jungle boat travel…..and hey, if its your time to go…its your time to go eh!  Still, didn’t fancy drowning or being food for the alligators and piranhas tho, so I had a life jacket for us to share in the hammock with us.  Lol.  We enjoy boat life…you have lots and lots of time to chill, write, read, paint and make friends.

It only took four days to Sao Gabrielle de Cashuera (Saint Gabrielle of the Fast Waters) which was the last military outpost before the Frontera with a 95% indigenous Indian population spanning 23 tribes, and many more languages.  The main language is Portuguese since the conversions and conquerors, but we got quite far with my Spanish.  We planned to cross here into Venezuela, by hitching another lift on a cargo boat going north up the Rio Negro, finally catching another up the Orinoco and then on the Angel Falls.  But, when you are hitching lifts the boats have no schedule, and you tend to hang around for a long time waiting, and ports are not the best laces to hang around, lots of piss-heads and vagabonds.

Unfortunately, there is a big alcohol and cocaine problem among some of the Indians.  After the christian and catholic churches did there very best to trash their way of life, their religions and language, many have been left with serious identity problems and have turned to drugs and drink…shame.  We did however meet some lovely people and were welcomed into their homes, fed and given presents.  This far up the river you get very few travellers, they tend to stay away because there are two very active strains of malaria here, so we were very exotic and much in demand.

We met a great guy called Luiz, who lives in Brazil, but loves the Amazon, and surprise surprise, was an artist, teacher and anthropology fan too…of course, we got on like a house on fire, and plan to do arty business with each other in the future, like Amazonian artist exchange programs, exhibitions and shipping tribal goodies to England.

We made plans to teach an art workshop in one of the communities for the kids.  Some Indians don’t like to be called ´tribes´ anymore, they thnk it is a primitive term....shame!  In a world threatened by globalisation and western consumerism, nature worshipping customs and old traditions were being lost, and we hoped that by engaging the kids in art activities, it would fire up their enthusiasm for art, and possibly a profession teaching art later, rescue lost traditions, and give them something to enjoy and not end up on drugs.  That said, there ARE educated Indians doing their best to restore and keep their ancient ways alive....it wasnt all doom and gloom.

We met a Turkano indian called Juvecio, and with his help and translation skills we got a invite by the headman to a community who create the most amazing woven baskets.  Soooo, armed with a pack of A4 photocopy paper and acrylic colours we made a workshop with all the village kids...The class went down great..some of these kids had never seen a pot of paint.

After that we managed to go upriver, to another community, just me and Marcus with our Tukano indian, ex village chief and budding professional rip-off artist Juvencio, and visit another community up river by canoe.  We stayed for two days, bargaining in the local currency...petrol...and had an authentic experience with them, and even went hunting day and night.  One day we got lost in the jungle when a rainstorm hit..we were with two indians, and even they were worried cos it started to get dark, and not even they go into the jungle at night!!!   We did get out eventually, totally drenched and cold, with nothing to show food wise but a small fish!!  lol...it was fecking great....you dont get that on a sanitized tour!!!  lol  We could tell so much more about these journeys

After this our plan to hitch a lift on the next passing cargo boat from Sau Gabrielle, further up the Negro, into Venezuela, and up the Orinoco river until we got to Angel falls ended.  The boat kept getting delayed, and the price of the petrol kept going up, so we hightailed it out of Brazil....a non stop four day journey, sleeping rough on airport floors and upright on buses....hard going...but three planes, a bus and a train later...we made it all the way back to Bolivia.  Our tent, ect was waiting for us there with my friends in Samaipata, near Santa Cruz.  After nearly a week there chilling out we came here...to Paraguay.

We are enjoying Paraguay, it gets very few visitors, its tourist infrastructure is still in its infancy. We have been camping at Laguna Blanca in Paraguay, swimming in the beautiful clear waters and enjoying the beach and butterflies, sooooo many butterflies, but not the mossies that were so fecking big they bit through your clothes.  Anywhoooo.....we are in Asuncion, again, the Capital, having a great time.  The last time we were here we went to the Ballet, ate loads of all you can eat buffet and did computer admin...again we are here doing the same, but going to the Opera tonight....wot toffs eh!! lol.  Argentina beckons tomorrow, and the falls, and more buses before we get to Patagonia.  But its really nice here, lovely, lovely people and great food!

Since leaving the jungle, and living on dried black fish and manioc, (yes...piranha is all teef and bones!!!) we have been eating well and living well again, not that we dont like peasant living, but good food is always a bonus.  As soon as we got to our friends house, Andrea and Martys (those nutters i first met in Cambodia!!)  in Bolivia, we began scoffing steaks, watching good movies and not moving for 4 days cos we were permanently stoned!!!  God, marty is a total monster for the naughty stuff!!  lol...we cant keep up, in fact, neither of us want to, and we refused the coke, however pure it is in Bolivia!! Crap stuff...crap!!   lol.

We were happy to be back on the road again....this time on the bus to Paraguay!!  The bus trip was a doddle, but the bus was totally crap (thats Bolivia for ya!!), and the border formalities in Bolivia were a piece of cake (in fact most countries have been a bit lax). However...da da derrrrrr...when we got to the immigration point in Paraguay, which was quite a way into the country through the vast, dusty and spikey nothingness of the Chaco that is only home to cows and Menonites, we were herded off the bus and lined up as if we were waiting for a firing squad!!!  There were quite a few nervous looking folk...we were cool as always.  All our bags were then removed from the bus, and arranged infront of their owners.  Tough looking guards eyeballed us, and then they produced a big black sniffer dog!!  Oh ohhhhhh!!!

I thought the dog would get excited at the bag of smelly dead flamingo parts in my main bag but it passed those by....phew!!!  But then on the second pass, after sniffing loads of other bags and not singling anybody out (even tho the guards kept passing the mutt over certain bags because they didnt like the look of thier owners) it decided to get all excited about our tent!  The harmless looking tent....that had housed a kilo of wicked weed for 4 days!! I had a sudden horrible thought that I hadnt cleared out all the little green crumbs from the inside pocket!!  Arrggghhhh!!!  My certainty at being totally clean except for the odd illegal seed pod, beak, bone and feather, changed.  Its quite a feeling eh, when your stomache suddenly feels empty, your mouth tingles and your butt hole very quickly feels ready for action!  lol.

Amazingly the guards didnt strip it, and they went through ALL our bags, they just squeezed it a little and felt around the tent poles.  The search became much more lax when we pretended to speak no Spanish, and that we were simple English tourists.  I managed to tell him "Hay no Drogas", and he seemed ok with that.  But the formalities and scrutiny of passports and paperwork went on for another hour. Bloody el.

And...as if that wasn't enough...we were stopped every half hour/ hour for a bus search.  Every now and again someone was pulled off the bus and checked again.  I hadnt seen security checks like this since Mexico 7 years ago.  it was a long, long journey!!  lol.

Anyway...the upstart of that is that we are gonna be super careful in future...but not that we are silly with drugs anyway....sensible, responsible adults that we are....bloody el...we are gonna try for a baby soon.  With lots of luck we will come back to bounce one on YOUR lap!!!  lol.

Have a fantastic time my dears, Happy Happy times at camp and please give our big love to our wonderful extended family....and tell that Carol to write me, or im not sending her anymore postcards!!  LOL.

Big big love to you sweeties,.... Big fat snogs always!  Hope you get to read this before camp.

I would also like to apologise, on behalf of myself, Paula and Mosh (Chris) for
leaving without saying goodbye, but we were soaked through and just wanted to
get dry and on the road. My tent was one of the many that bit the dust, in fact
all 4 poles snapped some in 2 places, so it went to the great campsite in the
sky when I got home.

Blessed Be

Hawky

Hi all
Yes, it was a really special weekend, I enjoyed it all.  The ritual was lovely, and of course the food, the beer and the company were all exceptional!

I'm sorry I cleared off without saying goodbye, but quite a lot of folks were still asleep, and once I'd got the tent down I just, well - went!!!

Hugs
Beth

She likes furniture and things that have curves (they had a lovely round office
table from us via freecycle years ago)

He has lovely red/ginger boingy hair thats quite long.

Could you please step forward? It would be great to say hello, and mabye head
out for a beer one evening with you both.

Id also like to say another hello to the very cheeful lady who came and said hi

Douglas and I had a lovely Saturday up at Sentry.. was lovely to see so many
familar faces again!

I have posted some photos onto the group for you all to enjoy.. if anyone wants
copies, please just send me a message with your email addresses and I will be
delighted to oblige.

and now...... the long awaited..... reipie for Banoffee Pie!!!!

4 ripe bananas (you might need less if you are making a small one)

1 tin of dulce de leche (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dulce_de_leche) I suggest
you go to your local supermarket, and look on the shelves near sweetened
condensed milk)

1 baked pastry case

1 small pot of double cream

1 small bar of chocolate

1 grater

1 whisk, 1 last lick, some spoons, and some friends!

HOW TO DO IT..

Slice the bananas into the pre-baked pastry case, spoon the caramel mixture over
the bananas (it will settle down, fill the gaps and smooth itself out) Whip the
cream until it forms a firm peak when you take the whisk out. Put the cream over
the pie (spread it out a bit) grate some chocolate over the cream.

Put the whole thing in the fridge. Its best to make this a few hours before you
are going to eat it - this gives the caramel and the bananas time to get to know
each other. Take it out of the fridge about half an hour before you plan on
eating it.

Serve it out, tuck in and dont forget to lick your plate!!
