I have put the pictures up of various buildings at the Ancient Technology Centre
in Cranborne. For some reason the position of the photos has been
randomised?????

The investment of time and money here is considerable, but it is a full time
educational centre with county council staff and a big team of volunteers.

Excellent photos - it looks to be a fascinating place!

The buildings all look very large - presumably we'd do somthing on a slightly smaller scale?
And will Derek need planning permission? (argh!)

Planning permission definately needed for a long house but should not need for smaller dwellings which would go down as farm buildings sheds etc.

Far as I know if it dont have foundations you dont need planning permission so a long house or round house on a concrete slab is ok

Concrete slab? Sorry, but I hope not! The floor of a roundhouse needs to be
beaten earth with a slab of stone for the hearth. I would imagine it would be
similar for a longhouse.

Hi Liz,
That's exactly what was under the wooden kitchen floorboards in my old house.

Thanks a lot the photos will be a big help. It is as I suspected however, they had a lot of money to spend and the buildings look new, unused and modern. For anyone who has not visited Merton and the Viking village that was built there on a shoe string it's well worth a visit and I feel far more in line with what we shouild be looking to achieve at SENTRY. Thanks again Steve.

Ron

Not a critism, as such, but a reminder.

The Longhouse looks new as they are still building it, but even that look very
'earthy' and 'natural' compared with most modern houses. The rest of the
buildings I would say, having been there look well used (as they are for lots of
re-enactment event, school parties, story-tellings, and pagan events); but you
also have to remember that all these building types when built in their original
times would have looked 'new'! People didn't build 'old' looking buildings, or
make 'old' looking pots, or whatever. And most of these buildings using large
amounts of wood and thatch and earth and wattle and daub would have needed
constant patching and re-thatching, rotten timber replacement, etc., and most
would have needed re-building after about 30 years.

Hiya

The camp dates are 28-31 Aug, 19-21 Sept and 30 Oct - 2 Nov.

I can't make the September one, but I'm certainly aiming for the end of August one!
