I read the articles, and found them very interesting, but I have a few
questions to put out there, or 1 question actually: Ideologically or
morally or however you care to put it, is there anything wrong with
prostitution?
As far as I could gather from the articles there were 2 basic
arguments against prostitution:
1. The damning statistics of the huge numbers of prostitutes who are
forced to do this through trafficking and social deprivation and the
violence they suffer.
2. The fact that if women anywhere are prepared to sell their bodies
then that has an effect on women everywhere.
No 1 is far as I'm concerened is a good enough reason to put in place
whatever legislation is necessary to end prostitution, but my question
is this:
In a perfect world where true equality between the sexes existed,
where there was no trafficking, rape, no women were forced into
prostitution by social circumstances etc. etc. If a woman wanted to be
a prostitute (admittedly I fail to see why anyone would want to do
that!) would it be ok? Or as point 2 would suggest is it the case that
equality and prostitution are not compatible in any world (even a
perfect one)?
btw in case you were wondering I think prostitution is immoral, but
I'm not quite sure what that belief is based on...
The point of the question is, depending on whether or not prostitution
is fundamentally wrong, you're laws should either be aimed at ending
prostitution, or aimed at ending the violence and crime associated
with it, and the attitudes of men to women.
