campaign we're running at my work that it would be great if you could

The why women? campaign

Increasingly, women's organisations are reporting that gender equality
and women's issues have disappeared off the political agenda. Related
to this, women's organisations are currently facing the worst funding
crisis since the mid-80's.

Perceptions that women and men are now equal are stronger and more
widespread than ever, despite persistent and overwhelming evidence to
the contrary. These false perceptions of equality lead to women's
organisations being asked to justify why they are women-only, or why a
specific women's service or group is needed. Without women's
organisations, many women would not get their needs met, valuable
advocacy and campaigning for women's human rights would not happen,
and violence against women would continue to be seen as separate from
the equalities debate.

The Women's Resource Centre launched the why women? campaign in March
2006, which calls on government and funders to:
• acknowledge the systematic discrimination women continue to face
• sustainably fund and support the women's sector

* signing up to it, at www.whywomen.org.uk
* asking your local MP to sign the Early Day Motion (2424)to support
