Hi Everybody
We are three female students from Sheffield Hallam currently filming a
documentary on how women are objectified in the media and retail
industry aswell as the general over exposure of sex in society. We
would be very interested in hearing your views on this subject. Would
it be possible to have a couple of minutes of your time for an
interview or even come along to the meeting on thursday the 29th and
chat to some of the members? If any members feel uncomfortable with
this we will respect their privacy. Please contact us as soon as
possible.

Hi Kirsty,
How horrible. This is really tough because people just don't think beyond the hiphop, gangsta, it's all a bit of glamourous fun type idea to see what pimp and ho actually represents : the slavery of women. I would start by printing out some facts about the reality of prostitution - not a big list, just one per A4 sheet, in big bold text, and paste them over the pimp and ho posters, plus all over campus - put some kind of slogan on the bottom to make it clear that this is in reference to the pimp and ho night ie pimp = slave trader, prostitution = violence against women, say no to pimps and hos etc etc. You could also print out some smaller versions and leaflet people. Write to the hallam paper to outline your opposition and try and get others on board - talk to them when you leaflet them.
If all this fails, do what one of my blog readers did once : turn up to the night dressed as an actual street prostitute : she
used make up to make it seem like she'd been beaten, needle marks on her arms, and leaflet people. I knwo that takes a lot of guts, and if I was in the country I'd come with you (Im in Chile), maybe one of your friends could do it with you if you don't want to do it alone?
You can find info about the reality of prostitution here :
"Research published in 2001 showed that almost two-thirds of prostitutes in three cities said their main reason for selling sex was to fund a drug habit, and the Home
Office estimates that 95 per cent of street prostitutes use heroin or crack cocaine. Most prostitutes in Britain come from poor backgrounds, more than two-thirds enter the sex trade before the age of 18, and half have suffered sex abuse at home before being taken up by pimps."
Well, good luck, I'll be with you in spirit, and email me if you have any questions or want any more help,

Hi,
I couldn't actually find the statistic, or any useful statistic, on the
internet, so I used the one Sarah was talking about yesterday. What do you
all think? Does anyone know or any other ones we could use instead/as well?

It's a US site, but seeing as the pimp and ho thing comes from the US I think
that's fine.
This article is also v illuminating and has stats relevant to the UK:
http://www.newstatesman.com/200601230006
This in particular:
"Research published in 2001 showed that almost two-thirds of prostitutes in

Hi I hope you can help me,
I'm a student at Sheffield Hallam University and am concerned as the
union is putting on a "pimps and ho's" night special for easter.
Posters have been put up all round campus and I really think this is
terrible. I have emailed the equal opportunities officer at the union
and am awaiting a reply.
I was hoping that you could give me some ideas about how this night
can be stopped.
Thanks

See you all later.
Sure sounds good, I think it's good to be organised if we can. I'm going
into town today to spy on the porn situation.

Shall we have an agenda for this weeks meeting? If yes I'd like to add:
Action to stop punishment of rape victim.
Talk again about permanent revolution prostitution debate.
Any update on where we should target for anti lads mags.
I'll print this out if people want to go ahead and have an agenda, just
let me know.
King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has sentenced a 19 year-old rape victim
to 90
lashes for appearing in public with an unrelated male, The Scotsman
reported
March 6. Islamic law forbids women from appearing in public with men
who are not
relatives.
According to various press reports, an unidentified man told the
victim that he
would spread rumors about a relationship between them if she failed
to meet him
at a shopping mall. The victim met the man, but as they drove off, a
group of
men with weapons stopped the car. She was subsequently raped 14 times
by her
seven captors, then returned to her home in the eastern city of
Qatif, where she
kept quiet and attempted suicide.
A Saudi judge has handed down jail terms ranging from 10 months to
five years to
five of the rapists and the death penalty for the other men.
Through Saudi newspapers, the victim has begged Abdullah for
clemency, asking
him to consider her as "one of his own daughters" and spare her from
punishment.
No problem

Hi everyone, FEM07 is almost upon us and its getting exciting. I'll put
the final line up in the files section. If anyone hasnt registered yet
you need to do it asap as places are filling up fast.
Lara- are you still ok to give a bit of an introduction to
SheffieldFems? I'll be chairing the object session so I dont think that
I should do it too.
It would be really nice to meet up with people who dont make it to the
meetings too. Is anyone planning to go to the music thing in the Raynor
lounge afterwards?
See you soon, Sarah
Ok that's fine I'll see you all next week.

Hi everyone, both Lara and I will be away this week, so can I suggest
we have a meeting next thursday at six in bar 197? There are a few
things we need to discuss so I thought I would put together an agenda.
Heres what I have so far:
1)Decide on whether to allow men at the group (there is a someone
interested in getting involved so I think we should decide sooner
rather than later.
2)Talk about having a discussion on the legalisation of prostitution
with the 'permanent revolution'. They have just published an article
online that I will post the link to.
3)Debating society is planning to have a lads mags in the union debate,
I think we should be involved, so maybe we could talk about this too
(laura, can you help us with this? you were really good last time!)
Anything else post it here and I'll put it down. It would be great if
any new members were able to come to the meeting too.
Have a nice week, Sarah
