Tesco Pig Suffering Exposed Again



In a follow-up to last year's Viva! exposé
<http://www.viva.org.uk/campaigns/pigs/tesco_investig.html> of conditions on a
pig farm belonging to one of Tesco's main suppliers, a further investigation has
found continued animal suffering in pigs destined for the supermarket giant. We
aren't yet in a position to go into detail or name names but repeat visits from
a Viva! investigator found evidence of neglect and animal suffering at the farm.
On one occasion a dead adult pig was simply left in the pen with other pigs and
was still there on the investigator's next visit.



Sadly, these findings came as no surprise to us. As Tesco have refused to change
their policy on pig welfare since our last investigation, we had no expectation
of finding anything else on this occasion. That is why we have decided to hold a
Second Day of Action Against Tesco on Saturday August 21st. Following the
outstanding success of our last Day of Action in January

place outside 200 Tesco stores, we aim to take the message about animal cruelty
direct to Tesco's customers again. As our Marks & Spencer duck campaign

companies do respond to this kind of pressure. Even more importantly, so do
shoppers who rarely connect the meat they buy with animal suffering.

Lifting the lid on Australia's Hidden Shame



Did you know that the kangaroo killing industry in Australia makes only 0.3 per
cent of the revenue that tourism does? Yet the Australian Government refuses to
acknowledge that the kangaroo - their national icon - is worth more alive than
it is dead. Tourists want to see mobs of kangaroos roaming when they go
down-under, but figures have dropped so dramatically they'll be lucky if they
even see roadkill.



This year alone 4.4 million kangaroos have been earmarked for obliteration in
the outback, slaughtered for no other reason than the blood money their meat and
skins bring. This huge figure doesn't even take into account those wiped out by
vehicles or illegal and non-commercial kills. Nor does it take into account a
million orphaned baby joeys, "worthless" to the industry, which are shot,
stamped on, clubbed over the head or abandoned to die. It's a hidden outrage
that's as shocking as the clubbing to death of seals in Canada - and just as
indefensible. The Australian Government use euphemisms such as 'humanely
harvesting' and 'renewable resource' in an attempt to cloud the fact that they
are authorising the slaughter of their country's wildlife for profit.



Unbelievably, with its new tourism push Australia wants to attract us to visit
with a logo featuring a kangaroo. Research has shown that the image of this
gentle marsupial makes people feel safer about travelling to Australia. Yet out
of view of holiday makers, millions are being wiped out in the biggest wildlife
massacre on the planet today. It is the ultimate betrayal.



What can we do, on the other side of the world, to help kangaroos? The good news
is that this time our remoteness is actually to our advantage. We are all
potential visitors to Australia - and they want our tourist dollars. Please

Massacre in Canberra



There can be no greater illustration of how much contempt the Australian
Government holds for its country's wildlife than the news that they have just
butchered 800 kangaroos and their joeys in a designated wildlife refuge, in full
view of the world's media. Not content with this they are now looking at rolling
out this killing machine to pastures new. Click here

Butcher bins 'exotic' meats



A Bristol butcher has announced that it has withdrawn from sale all so-called
'exotic' meats - ostrich, kangaroo and crocodile - after we sent him details of
the misery inherent in this industry (read the press release here
<http://www.viva.org.uk/mediareleases/pr2004/04-19butcher.htm> ). This follows
another Viva! success when Lloyd Maunders, a chain of butchers in Devon,
recently announced they would no longer stock dead wildlife in light of our
literature.



Please let Viva! know of any shops, restaurants or pubs still selling 'exotic'
meats in your area so we can provide the proprietors with the facts of this
barbaric trade. As you can see, this approach really does work.

VVF Highlight Iron Myths



The latest edition of the Vegetarian and Vegan Foundation's magazine,
VeggieHealth, carries an in-depth look at iron and lays to rest the
long-standing myth that vegetarians and vegans are at greater risk of iron
deficiency than meat-eaters. The magazine shows that iron obtained from animal
sources can actually be detrimental to health and appears to play a part in
meat-eaters' higher risk of developing diabetes than vegetarians.



The magazine also contains news on the latest research on the benefits of a
veggie diet and some fabulous smoothie recipes for hot summer days (now that
