Around 80 years ago, some West Country clergy were among the founders of The
League for the Prohibition of Cruel Sports.
Now, on Wednesday, September 15th, 2004 we can all raise our glasses and say: WE
WON!

Today MPs voted 339 to 155 to ban hunting with dogs. This is the greatest
victory for animal rights in years, possibly the first great victory of many!
It is a victory for democracy and a victory for compassion. It is proof that
while it is painfully and deadly slow, the political process can work. It is
proof that, despite all their lies, their funding for vivisection and their
infringements on our liberties, Labour has provided some sound legislation for
animals.

Tonight, we can all sleep soundly knowing that we have played a part in bringing
down this dreadful activity. To each and every reader who has ever done one
thing against hunting, well done. For me, this cause has taken up a signifcant
amount of my spare time for nearly half my life. Tonight I am proud I did my
part, and look forward to seeing the ban come into force.

Tomorrow (well, next month) we need to face the bill being rejected by the Lords
and forced through with the Parliament Act. Then we need to sit out the two
years of death and torment that MPs voted for. In these two years we will see a
further half a million animals die and we will see, if today is anything to go
by, a massive surge in desperation and violence from the pro hunting community.
They will try everything they can to overturn this bill and we must be ready to
meet them!

On Boxing Day animals will continue to die for another two years. In the next
month we will need to ask ourselves: If the hunt is in Newport, will we be
there too? We need your input. Please email it to us!

But that's all tomorrow, next week, next month. Tonight, like the foxes and
their nearly adult cubs, we can sleep a little sounder. The war is nearly over.
The biggest battle has been won!
