Hello everyone and Happy New Year.
As we fall headlong into 2005 we need your help as so much is happening!
1 - Hunt Ban
If all goes to plan (and it is a big if....please email your MP to make sure it
happens), hunting will finish on Friday, February 18th at midnight. That means
any hunt which goes out on Saturday 19th is breaking the law....but it's never
that simple. The hunts can go out, they just can't chase foxes. I think its
fairly safe to assume the Police won't send their evidence gatherers following
the hunt, so we need to be there. If we are not, the fight was for nothing and
hunts will trample the law as they have (allegedly) trampled foxes!
In many ways this is going to be so much better than monitoring or sabbing.
There will be no danger of us being 'law breakers' and indeed SAA wants to
inform the Police we are going out, so that we can perhaps starts working
together to get these criminals bang to rights.
We will need your help. If you will be able to do some monitoring from Feb 19th
onwards, even the occasional weekend please get in touch. Equally, if you are a
lawyer or law expert please get in touch as we could do with some pro-tips of
what evidence is crucial...
2 - Jill's Day
On Saturday, February 5th, thousands are expected to march through Coventry in
memory of Jill Phipps who died so tragically protecting animals. Jill, like
many of us, was involved in countless social causes. The day will feature
stalls, speeches, a silent march to Coventry Cathedral in memory and then a
lound march in celebration to the West Indian Club for vegan refreshments. This
promises to be an important and great day. Please let us know if you plan to
attend, we may may be able to arrange mass transport.
3 - Anyone got a home for a cat?
We've received this appeal from friends in Wolverhampton. If you can help, let
us know
Her dad died unexpectedly on Monday, and her Mom has been readmitted to hospital
with inoperable cancer. This has left the family pets - two goldfish and a cat -
in need of a new home. She is particularly concerned about Sebastian the cat as
fish should be easier to rehome. He was rescued some years ago from a very
abusive situation and, although loving, is still timid of people, especially
children, and is unlikely to settle easily around other animals. For this
reason, we are unable to have him with us (there's three cats here already) and
her brother's girlfriend has a severe cat allergy.
>Obviously, the family want to make sure that Seb goes to a good home - and if
possible, somewhere reasonably local so that they may still have the chance of
seeing him from time to time.
>
>Thank you all for any help and/or suggestions you may have - I know she will
appreciate any you can contribute and will be one less thing for her and her
brother to worry about.
