Call to Action For Dairy Calves in May

As many of you will know, Britain's dairy farmers have lobbied
vociferously for the return of live calf exports and, unfortunately,
they have got their way. Tiny male dairy calves will soon be shipped
from the UK to veal crates in France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Despite huge public opposition to this trade, our Government has
promised to do everything in its power to facilitate the resumption of
calf exports as soon as possible, including pledging unlimited police
resources to 'deal with protestors'. This affront to democracy, freedom
of speech and animal welfare cannot go unchallenged!

Viva! - along with Animal Aid, the Vegan Society and KALE - will be
holding a march and rally in Dover on Saturday 6th May 2006 to voice our
disgust at this loathsome trade. Please join us and celebrity speakers
(including TV's Wendy Turner Webster)! Meet at 11am on Dover seafront,
near the bus shelter/toilets on the Eastern Docks approach road.

Viva! has leaflets advertising the event. Please email toni@...
if you would like some to distribute.

Also, if you are not vegan already please do consider cutting out dairy
- as it's the single most effective thing you can do to help end the
international trade in veal calves. As ever, Viva! is here to help
<http://www.viva.org.uk/goingvegan/index.html> !

Help Britain's Hardest Working Mother

Many thanks to all of you who have signed up to take part in the Day of
Action in aid of Britain's Hardest Working Mother - the dairy cow. For
those haven't ordered materials yet, it's not too late to join in! Even
if you can't take part on the 25th March, our eye-catching leaflets are
perfect for door-dropping in the week leading up to Mother's Day. If you
email us your order ASAP we'll make sure you have them in plenty of
time. Contact toni@...

Viva! Tames Tesco Over Misleading Packaging!

Viva! continues to fight the supermarkets in the interests of farmed
animals. We were outraged to discover that Tescos packaged their own
label duck meat with images of bulrushes and reeds, in an effort to
mislead their customers into thinking these birds had access to the
outside and ponds for swimming! Needless to say the truth was very
different indeed. All of Tesco's ducks are raised in barren, industrial
sheds with no access to the outside and no access to water for swimming
- just like the vast majority of ducks raised for meat in the UK.

Viva! made a complaint to Trading Standards - which was supported by the
Food Standards Agency, which believed that Tesco could potentially be
breaking the law. To avoid the possibility of prosecution, Tesco hastily
announced that it was removing the bulrushes and reeds from all of its
duck meat packaging. A major victory for Viva!, consumers and the ducks
- and one that will leaves Tesco more than a little shamed-faced!

Back on the Road: The Incredible Veggie Roadshows!

They say all good things have to come to an end - but, really, why
should they?! Last year's Incredible Veggie Roadshows were such a - dare
I say it - incredible success that we thought we should bring some of
that veggie magic to brighten up 2006! This year the Viva! gang will be
rolling into York <http://www.viva.org.uk/york> , Swansea
<http://www.viva.org.uk/swansea> , Bath <http://www.viva.org.uk/bath>
and Norwich <http://www.viva.org.uk/norwich> . Click on the links to
find out more about each event. If you live locally and think you could
help out on the day, please contact angie@... .

Viva! Poland Fights For Seals!

March saw the sickening slaughter of seal pups on the Canadian ice
flows. Poland is one of Europe's biggest importers of seal fur and so
Viva! Poland went into action to try and kill the trade. A chilling TV
ad was shown on several channels in the lead up to the massacre. You can
view it here <http://www.viva.org.uk/seals.mpg> (4MB). Both production
and transmission were arranged free of charge.

Get Active for the Animals!

We really do rely on our local contacts to bring the word about animal
suffering and the benefits of a veggie lifestyle to real people. Here at
the Viva! office, we have resources, expertise, experience, commitment
and, of course, a compelling and irrefutable message but unless we can
get that message to the public, we will never achieve our aims.

We have hundreds of local contacts and groups around the country - most
of which would never say no to some extra help! To see if there's one
near you click here <http://www.viva.org.uk/campaigner/contacts01.html>
. If there isn't one near you, or you are interested in setting up your
own local group, contact oriel@... for a free information pack.

Dial a Friend - and Help Viva!

Use The Phone Co-op for your phone calls and broadband and save up to
20% on your telecoms bill. What's even better is that 6% of what you
spend on your calls and broadband is paid to Viva! as commission, for as
long as you use their service. Find out more about this unique way to
help our campaigns here
<http://www.viva.org.uk/businesses/phonecoop.html> .

Dawn of a New Lifescape

Over the last six months Lifescape magazine has been very good to Viva!
- giving our campaigns and The Incredible Veggie Show in London amazing
free publicity. So, we thought we'd return the favour - especially as
this excellent, veggie-centric woman's magazine is launching in WH
Smiths (surely a positive sign of the times).

Lifescape is an upbeat and glossy read, which puts the fun into ethical
living! Find out more here <http://www.lifescapemag.co.uk/> .

Your Viva!City

This email alert reaches thousands of people but we'd like your help to
make it even better. At the moment we have just one list of addresses
which means that we have to send the same email to everyone. From time
to time we'd like to let people know about things happening in their
area or get in contact with our younger supporters but we don't want to
fill everyone else's mailboxes with information that isn't relevant to
them. What we'd like to do is compile email lists separated into
different regions so that if we do have something we'd like to tell
people in Scotland or Yorkshire about, we can send them the information
without bothering anyone else.

The simplest way for us to identify which area you live in is to know
your postcode and so we'd be grateful if you could take a minute to fill
in our online questionnaire
<http://www.timetogoveggie.com/emailconfirm01.php> . We'd also really
like to know your age if you're under 18 - you can fill in your date of
birth on the form. You won't receive any postal mailings (unless you
want them and fill in your other details) and the information will be
used only to sort your email addresses. You don't even have to give us
your name if you don't want to.

As ever, if you would like any more information about any of our
campaigns, check out our website www.viva.org.uk
<http://www.viva.org.uk/> or get in touch with us directly - contact
details at the top of this email. Please don't click "reply", however -
your email won't be seen at that address.

Thanks again for all your support.

Note: Viva! does not forward emails from other sources or supply email
addresses to other organisations. The only emails you receive as a
result of being on this list come directly from us. Viva! has full and
current virus protection.
