Save Jake the Easter Duckling!

Viva! has just launched Jake's Story
<http://www.viva.org.uk/campaigns/ducks/jake.html> , a heart-breaking
short online film, telling the story of one little duckling's short life
on a factory farm.

Jake is from the same family of ducks you would see down on your local
pond, but the only water this little bird will ever see is in his
drinker. His feathers are dirty and his eyes are encrusted with dirt
because he can't clean himself properly. He will never know the freedom
of an open river, nor feel the sun on his back. Jake will never know the
love of his mother, and will die a frightening and barbaric death at
just seven weeks old. But it doesn't have to be this way.

Watch Jake's Story <http://www.viva.org.uk/campaigns/ducks/jake.html>
and then send our special e-card to everyone you know to help save Jake
- and millions of other birds just like him - this Easter!

March and Rally to Stop Live Calf Exports
Saturday 6th May 2006, Dover

Despite huge public opposition, Britain's unwanted male dairy calves
will soon be shipped long distances to suffer in Continental veal
crates. We must act now to stop it!

Join the demonstration in Dover on May 6th to voice your disgust.

Meet: Dover seafront, near the bus shelter/toilets

Time: Assemble at 11am, speakers at 12 noon and a march at 1pm

Transport is available from these areas:

West Midlands - contact wmids_animalaction@...
London - contact info@...
Brighton - contact Sue Dickens on 01273 885750
Bristol - contact warninfo@...
Lancashire - contact Lorraine Holden 01772 732861

Help promote the demo in your area by distributing our flyer (pdf
<http://www.viva.org.uk/images/home/doverfront_16mar.pdf> ). Order from
campaigns@...

Confined to a Crate

While the majority of British consumers are fervently against live
exports, most are completely unaware that their dairy habit is what
fuels it. All of the calves exported to Continental veal crates are male
cast-offs from dairy farms, unable to produce milk and too scrawny for
beef. Our new Confined to a Crate leaflet (left) urges people to take
direct action to stop live exports - by going vegan! It's available free
of charge and is suitable for stalls, demos, door-dropping or displaying
in local shops or libraries. We also have a matching A2 poster
available. Contact campaigns@...

Viva!USA Duck Victory!

Good news from the States: Viva!USA has persuaded the chain Pier 1 to no
longer use feathers in pillows and only use fibre-fillings!

It took less than two years to get Pier 1 to stop using duck feathers in
their pillows. Viva!USA initially contacted Pier 1 after they learned
that the feathers they used in their pillows came from Maple Leaf Farms
- a duck factory farm Viva!USA investigated. While Pier 1 holds that
this move was a strictly a "strategic business decision," Viva!USA knows
that only after heavy campaigning by activists did Pier 1 state that
they would look into alternatives.

Back on the Road: The Incredible Veggie Roadshows!

They say all good things have to come to an end - but, really, why
should they?! Last year's Incredible Veggie Roadshows were such a - dare
I say it - incredible success that we thought we should bring some of
that veggie magic to brighten up 2006! This year the Viva! gang will be
rolling into York <http://www.viva.org.uk/york> , Swansea
<http://www.viva.org.uk/swansea> , Bath <http://www.viva.org.uk/bath>
and Norwich <http://www.viva.org.uk/norwich> . Click on the links to
find out more about each event. If you live locally and think you could
help out on the day, please contact angie@...

Speak Welsh? / Siarad Cymraeg?

Increasingly, Viva! is being approached by media in Wales looking to
talk to Welsh speakers about animal and veggie issues. If you speak
Welsh and would like to do your bit for the animals we would love to
hear from you! Contact campaigns@...

Help Save Harriet the Pet Cow

Please send an urgent email to Margaret Beckett asking her to spare
Harriet, an eight year old pet Jersey cow in Gloucestershire, who DEFRA
plans to slaughter because she was once on a farm with a cow who
contracted BSE. Tell Ms Beckett that Harriet is a family pet who will
never enter the food chain and therefore poses no risk to anyone and
urge her to overturn Harriet's death sentence. Email:
secretaryofstate@...

Your Viva!City

This email alert reaches thousands of people but we'd like your help to
make it even better. At the moment we have just one list of addresses
which means that we have to send the same email to everyone. From time
to time we'd like to let people know about things happening in their
area or get in contact with our younger supporters but we don't want to
fill everyone else's mailboxes with information that isn't relevant to
them. What we'd like to do is compile email lists separated into
different regions so that if we do have something we'd like to tell
people in Scotland or Yorkshire about, we can send them the information
without bothering anyone else.

The simplest way for us to identify which area you live in is to know
your postcode and so we'd be grateful if you could take a minute to fill
in our online questionnaire
<http://www.timetogoveggie.com/emailconfirm01.php> . We'd also really
like to know your age if you're under 18 - you can fill in your date of
birth on the form. You won't receive any postal mailings (unless you
want them and fill in your other details) and the information will be
used only to sort your email addresses. You don't even have to give us
your name if you don't want to.

As ever, if you would like any more information about any of our
campaigns, check out our website www.viva.org.uk
<http://www.viva.org.uk/> or get in touch with us directly - contact
details at the top of this email. Please don't click "reply", however -
your email won't be seen at that address.

Thanks again for all your support.

Note: Viva! does not forward emails from other sources or supply email
addresses to other organisations. The only emails you receive as a
result of being on this list come directly from us. Viva! has full and
current virus protection.
