'Cruel Britannia' Campaign Exposes Pig Farm Horror

Over the past five months we have visited dozens of pig farms across Britain
and documented cruel and unhealthy methods of production which will shock most
consumers. Chosen entirely at random, the units exposed are typical of UK pig
farms generally and reveal a picture of filth, overcrowding, dead and dying
animals and widespread neglect.

Accompanied by our new eye-catching 'Piggles' mascot, we will be bringing our
'Cruel Britannia' campaign to high streets across the UK this summer. Using a
body-worn TV screen to air our shocking footage, we aim to crush the myth of
Britain's 'high welfare standards'.

Watch our new video at www.piggles.org.uk <http://www.piggles.org.uk/> and
order our new Cruel Britannia leaflet here
<http://www.viva.org.uk/shop/campaign.htm> .

Calf Flights Halted at Robin Hood!

Since the live export of calves resumed on May 5th, thousands of tiny calves
have been shipped through the port at Dover. The government has now given the go
ahead for exporters to fly calves to the Continent, paving the way for even more
calves to suffer the terror of transport and the misery of a veal farm.

Several airports have stated that they will not accept bookings for live calf
shipments, but despite announcing that they would resume from Robin Hood
International Airport, near Doncaster, this week, they too have now pulled out
of this barbaric trade.

Thank you if you added your voice to the calls for the airport not to take part
in live exports - every single one counted. For more on this result and live
exports see here <http://www.viva.org.uk/campaigns/cows/le_update2.html> .

No More Crocodile Tears

You may have seen recently on the news that a farmer has opened a crocodile farm
in East Anglia. Already intensively farmed abroad in appalling conditions, this
magnificent creature has become the latest to be subjugated to the horrors of
the factory farming system in this country. What next? Koala farms in Devon?
Dolphin farms off Blackpool?

This barbaric new farming practice is in its infancy in the UK - so new that
when we spoke to the State Veterinary Service they didn't even know if there
were any guidelines for slaughtering crocodiles. Yet despite this, the farmer in
East Anglia has boasted he wants to breed at least a thousand at his farm. Click
here <http://www.viva.org.uk/campaigns/exoticmeat/crocodile_uk.htm> to find out
how you can help us end the cruel trade before it gets a foothold.

Jake's Story at Wildlife Oscars!

Our short web film, Jake's Story, which tells the heart-breaking story of one
little factory farmed duckling, has been chosen as a finalist at this year's
Wildscreen Festival - the wildlife equivalent of the Oscars!

Chosen out of 412 films from 45 countries, Jake's Story will be sharing the
limelight with other prestigious finalists such as March of the Penguins, Werner
Herzog's Grizzly Man and the BBC's Planet Earth! We are absolutely over the moon
about this, as it cements what we've been saying all along - that ducks raised
for meat are essentially wild animals - and means that Jake's Story could be
seen by millions. Most people we speak to say they will never eat duck again
when they see the overcrowded, squalid industrial conditions they are kept in,
without access to water for swimming. So, the more people who see Jake's Story
the better!

View Jake's Story <http://www.viva.org.uk/jake> , and send it to everyone you
know.

York Biggest Veggie Roadshow Ever!

They say No.13 is unlucky - but not for the Incredible Veggie Roadshow in York!
The 13th show of the tour brought in the most people yet - with an unprecedented
2,242 joining us for a taste of the good veggie life. BBC Radio York did a two
hour broadcast from the show, so the folks at home were able to hear about the
wonderful food (but not able to taste it!) and about the serious issues that
underpin these upbeat events.

Missed out on York? Well, Viva!'s Incredible Veggie Roadshow will be rolling
into Swansea on Saturday August 5th 2006.

A brilliant free family day out, there will be cookery demonstrations, talks,
veggie stalls, competitions, cruelty-free fashion, beauty products, vegan food,
books, information and campaign news. And free nutritional advice will be
available all day.

Find out more about it and see the full list of shows here
<http://www.viva.org.uk/roadshows06/swansea.html> . We would especially like to
hear from you if you can help out publicising the event locally by putting up
posters or handing out invites, or if you can help out on the day itself - so
please get in touch <mailto:angie@...> . It's incredibly rewarding to
see so many people interested in vegetarianism and the shows have proved so busy
so far that we really need all the help we can get!

Stop the Eye Abattoir

Nearly a billion animals are slaughtered in the UK every year for food - which
represents suffering on an almost unimaginable scale. As the saying goes, if
slaughterhouses had glass walls we'd all be vegan. Unfortunately, there is
nothing illegal about killing animals for food, but we do have a chance to
oppose a new abattoir near Eye, Suffolk. Please lend your support to the Stop
Eye Abattoir campaign and the local people fighting this new killing factory by
visiting their website <http://www.stopeyeabattoir.com/> .

Stop Tesco Selling Live Turtles in China

Tesco's expansion around the world has taken a unexpected and cruel twist - they
are now selling live turtles and frogs in their stores in China. The Tortiose
Trust has started a campaign to stop this British company doing what it wouldn't
dare try at home. Visit their website <http://www.tortoisetrust.org/> to find
out more.

Cured by Veggie Goodness

We all know that us veggies are leaner, healthier and more luscious than our
meat and dairy eating counterparts. We are often told by people how they have
overcome illness and improved their health by switching to a plant based diet -
and we are now putting together a database of these stories and would love to
hear from you! Please email jane@... and tell us your good news.

Get Flirty with the Squirty!

Yet another nail in the coffin of those misguided souls who say us vegans miss
out on the good things in life, as now we get Soyatoo, a delicious non-dairy
squirty cream in a can! Perfect with strawberries, on desserts and for anything
else that takes your fancy! Only £1.59 from Viva!.

Also new in stock is the Vegan Family Cookbook priced £14.99. It's a good,
basic-but-comprehensive compilation of vegan recipes that all the family can
enjoy.

Both are here, and should be up on the web soon. To order now contact us via
email <mailto:info@...> or phone 0117 944 1000.

Your Viva!City

This email alert reaches thousands of people but we'd like your help to make it
even better. At the moment we have just one list of addresses which means that
we have to send the same email to everyone. From time to time we'd like to let
people know about things happening in their area or get in contact with our
younger supporters but we don't want to fill everyone else's mailboxes with
information that isn't relevant to them. What we'd like to do is compile email
lists separated into different regions so that if we do have something we'd like
to tell people in Scotland or Yorkshire about, we can send them the information
without bothering anyone else.

The simplest way for us to identify which area you live in is to know your
postcode and so we'd be grateful if you could take a minute to fill in our
online questionnaire <http://www.timetogoveggie.com/emailconfirm01.php> . We'd
also really like to know your age if you're under 18 - you can fill in your date
of birth on the form. You won't receive any postal mailings (unless you want
them and fill in your other details) and the information will be used only to
sort your email addresses. You don't even have to give us your name if you don't
want to.

As ever, if you would like any more information about any of our campaigns,
check out our website www.viva.org.uk <http://www.viva.org.uk/> or get in touch
with us directly - contact details at the top of this email. Please don't click
"reply", however - your email won't be seen at that address.

Thanks again for all your support.

Note: Viva! does not forward emails from other sources or supply email addresses
to other organisations. The only emails you receive as a result of being on this
list come directly from us. Viva! has full and current virus protection.
