Foie-gras Free
Staffs!
Wendy
Turner-Webster Returns Home to Battle for
‘Tortured’ Birds
Presenter of popular TV
shows such as Pet Rescue, and one of Viva!’s most valued patrons, Wendy
Turner-Webster is campaigning to make her home county a kinder place to live
by making Staffordshire foie-gras free. Last week she was joined by her TV
actor husband Gary Webster, and Viva!’s giant duck, to hand in a
personally signed letter and evidence of the cruelty involved in its
production to the head of the County Council. She was urging the authority to
pass a motion to become the first in Britain to become officially foie-gras free.
The publicity generated for the plight of the
foie-gras birds was brilliant (making the front page of The
Sentinel two days in a row!). Wendy also wrote to businesses in
Staffordshire selling foie-gras – and they couldn’t get it off
the menu fast enough!
Our campaign gathered even more support from
unlikely bedfellows, Prince
Charles and London Mayor Ken
Livingstone, who were united in their opposition to foie-gras and support
for the foie-gras birds! Prince Charles' support made headlines around the
world.
Find out how you can contact your local council,
what else you can do, and more on the campaign so-far click here.
Burger
King’s ‘Torture Burgers’
Just when you thought you’d heard it all: in
a shameless publicity stunt, Burger King has announced that they will sell a
burger that contains foie-gras in a few select London outlets. The reality
is that they will probably sell very few - if any - but it is fundamentally wrong
that this company (which is already responsible for the deaths of countless
animals each year by selling burgers) is using 'torture in a tin' to raise
its profile. Complain using our letter here.

Soya Safe?
Absolutely!

Vegan Foundation (VVF), has launched a new website The Safety of Soya which reviews the latest science on soya,
busts apart the myths and provides delicious recipes. It is essential reading
for vegetarians, vegans and meat-eaters alike. If you want to read our
fully-referenced fact sheet on the safety of soya, find out more about
soya-based infant formulas, read some of the most frequently asked questions
and access some delicious recipes go to www.safetyofsoya.com.
Improving Choice for Vegetarians and Vegans
The Vegetarian &
Vegan Foundation are campaigning for vital changes to be made across the UK to how institutions
and businesses approach vegetarian and vegan foods. To pursue change –
and to bring healthy, nutritious, plant-based meals up the menu in hospitals,
eateries and supermarkets, we need to hear about your experiences – and
so have put together three mini surveys looking at:
Hospital food (if
you have been an inpatient within the last five years)
Children’s
restaurant meals
Supermarket
ready meals
Please help us by completing the survey
by Friday
9 May 2008. By doing do you’ll have a chance of winning one of three great
prizes.

Your Viva!City
This email alert reaches thousands of people but
we’d like your help to make it even better. At the moment we have just
one list of addresses which means that we have to send the same email to
everyone. From time to time we’d like to let people know about things
happening in their area or get in contact with our younger supporters but we
don’t want to fill everyone else’s mailboxes with information
that isn’t relevant to them. What we’d like to do is compile email
lists separated into different regions so that if we do have something
we’d like to tell people in Scotland or Yorkshire about, we can send
them the information without bothering anyone else.
The simplest way for us to identify which area you
live in is to know your postcode and so we’d be grateful if you could
take a minute to fill in our online questionnaire.
We’d also really like to know your age if you’re under 18 –
you can fill in your date of birth on the form. You won’t receive any
postal mailings (unless you want them and fill in your other details) and the
information will be used only to sort your email addresses. You don’t
even have to give us your name if you don’t want to.
As
ever, if you would like any more information about any of our campaigns,
check out our website www.viva.org.uk or
get in touch with us directly – contact details at the top of this
email. Please don’t click “reply”, however – your
email won’t be seen at that address.
Thanks
again for all your support.
Note: Viva! does
not forward emails from other sources or supply email addresses to other
organisations. The only emails you receive as a result of being on this list
come directly from us. Viva! has full and current virus protection.
