Stop the Cull!: National Rally for the Badgers The Incredible Veggie Roadshow in Nottingham
Job Vacancy: Freelance Web Designer/Developer
More Urgent Action for the Badgers!
It is crunch time for both English and Welsh badgers. Battle lines are being drawn at Westminster and it is vital we all lend our support to stop this needless slaughter of wildlife going ahead. Recently, Lord Krebs – who called for the original ‘cull’ of badgers in the UK – has said that we should be looking at other methods of controlling the disease (something we and other wildlife groups have said all along). He also made a very bleak warning, saying that a badger ‘cull’ across the UK could cost the lives of at least 170,000 animals. That is more than half the population. Badger ‘culling’ will not control bTB – and could make it worse – yet incredibly it is still seriously being considered by government and pushed for by farmers.
Viva! is forging ahead with our fight for badgers – as well as highlighting the real reason they are under threat: the meat and dairy industries.
Celebrities such as Wendy Turner-Webster, Joanna Lumley, Jenny Seagrove, Benjamin Zephaniah and Twiggy have all thrown their support behind the campaign. Read what they have to say here.
Viva! Rally for the Badgers: Cardiff, Saturday, June 28 2008 1pm outside the Welsh Assembly Building (Debating Rooms) (then 2-4pm at the Future Inn Cardiff Bay)
Hundreds of people are expected at this Saturday’s peaceful rally and photo call to call on the Welsh Assembly to make a U-turn over their decision to allow a trial ‘cull’ of badgers in Wales. Join us! Find out more here and read our media release.
Contact Hilary Benn:
A decision is “imminent” on badger ‘culling’ in England. Hilary Benn (the Secretary of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs) will be deciding. If you haven’t already written to him please do! This may be our last chance to stop the wholesale slaughter of English badgers. Please write today and get everyone you to know to write as well. Click here for a sample email.
Get Active for Badgers: we have plenty more quick and easy ideas on how to get involved in the fight to protect our wildlife – including door-dropping free leaflets (a brilliant way to alert others and get them involved!). Find out more here.
Find out More: read our fully referenced fact sheet that blows out the water the claims that ‘culling’ badgers could in anyway help eradicate bTB, and find out why veganism is the ultimate solution.

Can you help with battery hen rescue?
In a couple of weeks time a battery egg production unit in Brighton is clearing thousands of birds. Local animal rescue agencies have one week to take as many as possible.
West Yorkshire animal welfare / rights groups are joining forces to get as many as they can safe and loving new homes. These chicks could live for another eight or so years and will probably continue to lay eggs for the next five or six.
If you cannot take any, Brighton Animal Action need boxes (of a similar size to pet carriers), tape, hay, and may need drivers to collect and distribute some of the birds.
Please call Vick or Chris on 01924 374295 with offers of help.

Your Viva!City
This email alert reaches thousands of people but we’d like your help to make it even better. At the moment we have just one list of addresses which means that we have to send the same email to everyone. From time to time we’d like to let people know about things happening in their area or get in contact with our younger supporters but we don’t want to fill everyone else’s mailboxes with information that isn’t relevant to them. What we’d like to do is compile email lists separated into different regions so that if we do have something we’d like to tell people in Scotland or Yorkshire about, we can send them the information without bothering anyone else.
The simplest way for us to identify which area you live in is to know your postcode and so we’d be grateful if you could take a minute to fill in our online questionnaire. We’d also really like to know your age if you’re under 18 – you can fill in your date of birth on the form. You won’t receive any postal mailings (unless you want them and fill in your other details) and the information will be used only to sort your email addresses. You don’t even have to give us your name if you don’t want to.
As ever, if you would like any more information about any of our campaigns, check out our website www.viva.org.uk or get in touch with us directly – contact details at the top of this email. Please don’t click “reply”, however – your email won’t be seen at that address.
Thanks again for all your support.
Note: Viva! does not forward emails from other sources or supply email addresses to other organisations. The only emails you receive as a result of being on this list come directly from us. Viva! has full and current virus protection.
