You may have seen the following story in the Shropshire Star. The British
Hedgehog Preservation Society called the sale of these hedehogs from 'Corner
Exotics' in Shrewsbury "cruel, irresponsible and also potentially hazardous to
natural wildlife." Keeping Exotic pets is not a good idea, as the have very
unique needs. It is not always to easy to find vet care, people after cheaper
hedgehogs may try and capture wild hedgehogs and if set free it could be
devasting for the hedgehog and/or it's environment.
Please write to the Shropshire Star Mailbag, Ketley, Telford (01952 242424) or
starmail@... asking Abbie not to breed these hedgehogs, but
instead to hand them over to a compassionate animal charity who will be able to
look after them properly. Also ask that she doesn't buy hedgehogs from pet
shops, if she is so hard up in the first place!
Abbie solves prickly poser over college fees
A Shropshire teenager may have found a cute answer to the prickly problem
of how to pay for her college degree.
Abbie Morris, of Ellerdine, faces finding £9,000 in tuition fees and
living expenses in her ambition to study musical theatre.
The 18-year-old is currently studying dance in Kent but hopes to go on to
do a three-year degree at the prestigious Mountview Academy of Art in London.
Abbie and her family now plan to breed African pygmy hedgehogs after
bringing one home called Fudge from a Shrewsbury pet shop, who turned out to be
pregnant.
Fudge, who is now six months old, gave birth to three babies, called
Marigold, Sweetpea and Thistle.
They now have another called Foxglove, which Abbie hopes to use for
breeding.
The creatures are becoming increasingly popular pets and babies can
command prices of up to £175 each.
Abbie's mother Val, who runs the Hanmer Arms, near Whitchurch, said the
hedgehogs were ideal pets.
She added: "We would like to be able to subsidise Abbie with the
hedgehogs."
