Welsh Day of Action for Badgers!
Saturday, 20 September, 2008

England may have said "No" to a 'cull' of badgers, but the Welsh Assembly are stubbornly pressing ahead with plans to slaughter wildlife in a misguided attempt to control bovine TB.

To raise support in
Wales for both badgers and common sense, we are organising a Day of Action across Wales in September. Unless we achieve a U-turn, the Welsh countryside will be littered with cages, and thousands of animals could lose their lives.

We have new free Welsh specific materials and good science on our side - we just need you!

Download the leaflet here (PDF). Find out how you can order it (and other free materials) and how to get involved here.

There are more ideas on how you can get involved with the general campaign here.  Also, check out Viva!'s shocking factsheet on badgers and cattle TB – and why going vegan protects our wildlife – here.

Green Your Life – and help save the planet!

The world is at a crossroads, most environmental scientists believe, and there is little time left to mend our ways. With carbon footprints the size of Goliath’s and rampant consumption, we in the West need to dramatically change our lifestyle – and do it quickly.

Viva!’s latest magazine –
Green Your Life – shows how everyone can, almost overnight, dramatically reduce their impact on the globe. The two greatest threats to the planet come from diet and power generation and Viva! provides the why’s and how’s of changing both. Following this lead will immediately slash your carbon footprint and dramatically reduce global warming PLUS end your part in the world’s other accelerating environmental disasters.

Green Your Life has been produced in co-operation with Ecotricity, the world’s first truly green energy company, which invests only in wind generation.

Every Viva! supporter will have received the magazine. If you are not a supporter why not join and, as well as getting our great thrice yearly magazine, also support our life saving campaigns? In the meantime, click here to read the magazine in full online or here to find out more information.

Veggie Month 2008!
Saving farmed and wild animals

We have already had a fantastic response to this year’s Veggie Month, but it’s not too late to get involved!

This year we are determined to expose the role the meat and dairy industries have in the destruction of biodiversity – by destroying the natural habitats of wild animals. To do this, we have produced a fantastic new leaflet and poster: ‘Your next burger could cost him his LIFE!’. You can order these free materials (and many more!) to help spread the ‘Go Veggie’ message. Click here to download the new leaflet (PDF), or order your materials here and find out how even just half an hour of your time could help save thousands of animals.

The Safety of Soya

You may have seen the latest anti-soya news story on soya and male fertility. It’s based on a very small study of overweight men experiencing fertility problems – hardly typical. Viva!’s sister group, the Vegetarian & Vegan Foundation (VVF) get more nutritional enquiries about soya than any other subject. Nearly every day someone emails or telephones the VVF to ask is soya safe? Can it harm children? Will it feminise boys? Does it contain hormones? There is a huge amount of misinformation and downright daftness about soya which is why they have launched a website dedicated to informing and myth-busting. If you want to read a fully-referenced factsheet on the safety of soya, find out more about soya-based infant formulas, read some of the most frequently asked questions and access some delicious recipes go to www.safetyofsoya.com.

Incredible Veggie Roadshow comes to Portsmouth!

Viva!’s Incredible Veggie Roadshow will be rolling into Portsmouth on Saturday 27 September 2008.

Free entry! A brilliant family day out, there will be cookery demonstrations, talks, stalls,  food tastings, competitions, cruelty-free fashion, beauty products, vegan food products, books, information and campaign news. And free nutritional advice will be available all day.

If you can help publicise the event locally by putting up posters or handing out invites, or if you can help out on the day itself – please get in touch. It’s incredibly rewarding to see so many people interested in vegetarianism and veganism and as a result of our efforts to date millions of animals have been saved.

The fish eating vegetarian?

Do vegetarians or vegans eat fish? No, of course not! However, it never ceases to amaze us the eateries that try and palm off dishes containing fish as veggie, or dishes with dairy and honey in as vegan. Let us know if you come across this and we’ll get on the case! Email Angie with those food offenders who could do with a little bit of good veggie education.

This email alert reaches thousands of people but we’d like your help to make it even better. At the moment we have just one list of addresses which means that we have to send the same email to everyone. From time to time we’d like to let people know about things happening in their area or get in contact with our younger supporters but we don’t want to fill everyone else’s mailboxes with information that isn’t relevant to them. What we’d like to do is compile email lists separated into different regions so that if we do have something we’d like to tell people in Scotland or Yorkshire about, we can send them the information without bothering anyone else.

The simplest way for us to identify which area you live in is to know your postcode and so we’d be grateful if you could take a minute to fill in our online questionnaire. We’d also really like to know your age if you’re under 18 – you can fill in your date of birth on the form. You won’t receive any postal mailings (unless you want them and fill in your other details) and the information will be used only to sort your email addresses. You don’t even have to give us your name if you don’t want to.

As ever, if you would like any more information about any of our campaigns, check out our website www.viva.org.uk or get in touch with us directly – contact details at the top of this email. Please don’t click “reply”, however – your email won’t be seen at that address.

Thanks again for all your support.

Note: Viva! does not forward emails from other sources or supply email addresses to other organisations. The only emails you receive as a result of being on this list come directly from us. Viva! has full and current virus protection.
