Viva! Investigates ‘Freedom Foods’ Turkeys

In November, Viva! investigators uncovered horrific scenes of animal suffering on an intensive turkey farm in the Midlands claiming to belong to the RSPCA Freedom Foods accreditation scheme. Crammed into the shed, the only ‘enrichment’ these birds had were a few paltry CDs hanging from the feed lines. Many had leg deformities and injuries, with some birds demonstrating difficulty walking. Others had facial injuries including wounded snoods and one with a burst abscess that had covered him in his own blood.

Viva! reported our findings to the RSPCA (demanding an immediate investigation), Defra and Trading Standards. You can view the footage online and view photos from here and read more about the investigation here. The truth is, there can never be high welfare on intensive turkey farms – and all animals suffer a violent and terrifying death. The best way to end the suffering of turkeys (and all animals) is simply not to eat them. This is the message that we – and many of you – have taken to the high street in our month of action for turkeys. Thank you!

Read Viva!’s updated fact sheet on intensive turkey farming here.

Stop Press: Viva!’s Justin Kerswell on The One Show Tonight (Wednesday)!

Viva!’s deputy director, Justin Kerswell, will appear on BBC1’s prime-time The One Show tonight (from 7pm). He was invited to appear in a short film urging people to ditch meat this Christmas. Justin suffered the humiliation of being forced to wear a paper crown (amongst other things), but says that he doesn’t mind compromising his dignity for the animals!

Ikea Profit From Rudolph Meat

Viva! were shocked to find out that the furniture giant, Ikea, were selling reindeer meat. We were even more disturbed to find that traditional methods of herding in Nordic countries had given way to reindeer being chased by motorcycle, snow mobile and even helicopter. 70 per cent of the reindeer that are killed are calves, which mean that they never even see snow. Our findings have been published in The Independent, The Telegraph, as well as media outlets all over the world.

Please contact Ikea and demand they take reindeer meat off the shelves. You can find contact details and a sample letter here. Read our media release here.

New guides from the VVF

Our sister group, the Vegetarian & Vegan Foundation (VVF), have published two new and exciting guides. White Meat Myths: Why White Meat is Not the Healthy Option (£2.90 inc p&p) is a colourful and ground-breaking guide explaining why white meat is not the healthy option for adults or children. It includes delicious recipes using meat alternatives. Fish-Free for Life: Why Plant Omega-3s are better for You and the Environment (£2.90 inc p&p) is an easy-to-read colourful guide which explains why plant-based omega-3 fats are much better for you and the planet than oily fish. It describes what dangerous toxins are found in oily fish and how they can cancel out any potential health benefits. Find out what the safer and healthier sources of omega-3 fats are and try some fabulous fish-free recipes made from sea vegetables including seafood paella and chowder. Includes a wealth of information on sea vegetables including a handy nutritional chart. Order your copies from the VVF on 0117 970 5190 (Mon-Fri 9am-6pm) or online from www.vegetarian.org.uk/vvfshop

Marathon Woman!

On Sunday 26 April 2009, the Vegetarian & Vegan Foundation’s Senior Nutritionist Amanda Woodvine will be running the London Marathon (26.2 miles!) in a bid to raise at least £1,000 for the VVF. All money raised will help support the VVF’s vital campaigns. Please sponsor Amanda by sending a cheque (made payable to ‘V V F’) to Amanda Woodvine, VVF, Top Suite, 8 York Court, Wilder Street, Bristol BS2 8QH. You can also donate via credit or debit card by calling 0117 970 5190 (Mon-Fri, 9am to 6pm).

Finally, all at Viva! would like to wish all (man and animal alike) a peaceful Christmas, and a compassionate New Year.

Your Viva!City

This email alert reaches thousands of people but we’d like your help to make it even better. At the moment we have just one list of addresses which means that we have to send the same email to everyone. From time to time we’d like to let people know about things happening in their area or get in contact with our younger supporters but we don’t want to fill everyone else’s mailboxes with information that isn’t relevant to them. What we’d like to do is compile email lists separated into different regions so that if we do have something we’d like to tell people in Scotland or Yorkshire about, we can send them the information without bothering anyone else.

The simplest way for us to identify which area you live in is to know your postcode and so we’d be grateful if you could take a minute to fill in our online questionnaire. We’d also really like to know your age if you’re under 18 – you can fill in your date of birth on the form. You won’t receive any postal mailings (unless you want them and fill in your other details) and the information will be used only to sort your email addresses. You don’t even have to give us your name if you don’t want to.

As ever, if you would like any more information about any of our campaigns, check out our website www.viva.org.uk or get in touch with us directly – contact details at the top of this email. Please don’t click “reply”, however – your email won’t be seen at that address.

Thanks again for all your support.

Note: Viva! does not forward emails from other sources or supply email addresses to other organisations. The only emails you receive as a result of being on this list come directly from us. Viva! has full and current virus protection.
